Clean Hands – Drunk Kids - from TRUNEWS

A disturbing trend is on the rise.

Since 2010, poison control centers around the country are seeing a near quadruple increase in the number of calls related to kids younger than 12 who’ve ingested hand sanitizer. This from a new study by the Georgia Poison Center.

Dr. Gaylord Lopez, the center’s director, says “Kids are getting into these products more frequently, and unfortunately, there’s a percentage of them going to the emergency room.”  The alcohol content in hand sanitizer ranges anywhere from 45 to 95 percent, meaning that swallowing even small amounts can cause alcohol poisoning in children.

By comparison, wine and beer contain about 12 and 5 percent alcohol, said Dr. Lopez, who says that some kids do it deliberately to get drunk, while others do it on a dare from friends.
