Jihadists in German Army on rise, 29 former soldiers are suspected - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) The number of jihadists in the German Army is growing.  Officials have said as many as 29 former soldiers have joined ISIS in Syria and Iraq. About 65 active members are being investigated for having alleged jihadist sympathies, according to RT.

The German military counter-intelligence service (MAD) has reported that 320 suspected cases have been reported in the last nine years.

Now the German Defense Ministry wants MAD to make sure jihadists are not joining the army, by looking into whether they have ties to radical movements, but laws would need to change. Right now soldiers are not vetted. The only people checked are soldiers who want to serve in “sensitive areas”.

But experts don’t believe there is a specific goal from ISIS to get members into the army.

“To my knowledge there is so far no systematic push by Islamist organizations to infiltrate the army,” said Hans-Peter Bartels from the Social Democratic Party.

In addition to the soldiers possible joining ISIS, as many as 760 Germans have traveled to join the group, according to the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism.

The threat of terror attacks on German cities is on the rise too, in the aftermath of the Paris and Brussels massacres.  There is concern about refugees becoming radicalized.

In the past year, crime in German has skyrocketed, as reported by TRUNEWS.

“We see the security situation as very serious, though we have no immediate intelligence on planned attacks in Germany, the head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Hans-Georg Maassen, told Die Welt.
