(TRUNEWS) Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled same-sex marriage as constitutional, the way is paved for other types of alternative marriages – like polygamy.
On Monday, a federal appeals court reversed a Utah Supreme Court decision that struck down part of the state’s bigamy laws in 2013, according to Bloomberg View. It involved a case featuring the Brown family in the TV show “Sister Wives”.

After the show first aired in 2010, the police in Lehi, Utah said they were going to investigate, after receiving complaints. The county attorney, Jeffrey Buhman said he would consider prosecuting the family.
The Browns asked a federal court to deem bigamy laws as unconstitutional. Before the court issued a ruling, Buhman announced the new policy of only prosecuting if fraud or abuse was committed, which didn’t apply to the Browns.
But the district court made a ruling anyway and said the Utah bigamy law violated the free exercise of religion.
Since Buhman changed the law before the ruling, the Tenth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the case was moot.
The Associated Press has reported the Browns intend to appeal.
“The underlying rights of religious freedom and free speech are certainly too great to abandon. … This lawsuit is true to the original dream of those seeking freedom in Utah,” said family attorney Jonathan Turley.
He said he will take it to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary.
