Millions of Christians commemorating National Day of Prayer - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) Today is the National Day of Prayer.

On the first Thursday of May every year, Americans are asked to pray for the nation. The initiative began in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress and signed by President Truman.

The National Day of Prayer Task Force encourages Christians every year to participate in the effort, by providing them with materials and getting them to mobilize.

According to the National Day of Prayer website, the first call to prayer happened in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked people living in the colonies to pray for wisdom in the forming of the nation.

In 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed a day of “humiliation fasting and prayer”.

President Reagan, in 1988, formally established the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.

Every year local, state and federal observances are held to seek wisdom from God, just like the Founding Fathers.  It is estimated that over two million people will attend more than 30,000 events.

This year’s theme is “Wake Up America”, intended to encourage people, both individually and in business to return to God “in reverence for His Holy Name”.  The highlighted scripture is Isaiah 58:1.

“Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet.

Dr. Tony Evans was the 2016 Honorary Chairman. He wrote a special prayer that was read throughout the nation earlier Thursday.

The national observance was held in Washington, D.C. and was attended by Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, Mrs. Shirley Dobson, Dr. James Dobson, Anne Graham Lotz, and other Christian leaders and politicians.
