According to DEBKAfile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov seemed open to the possibility.  He and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry have talked on the phone multiple times about the war in recent days.

The Russians also said they will deliberate on the future of Syrian military commanders fighting the rebels.

Earlier this week, most of the leaders of Syrian rebel organizations reported for a meeting near Amman at the U.S. Central Command Forward-Jordan.  U.S. officials were there, along with representatives from Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The heads of the rebel groups were presented with agreements already reached between the U.S. and Russia, and included a provision for the resignation of Assad and his departure from Syria.  That was one of the sticking points held by the rebel leaders.

DEBKA reports the goal of the Obama Administration is for a ceasefire in Syria to prevent an attack on Aleppo by Russia, Iran, Syria or Hezbollah.  Russian President Vladimir Putin apparently halted airstrikes on the city.

The U.N. Security Council also held an emergency meeting Wednesday to push for a ceasefire in Syria, in response to the violence in Aleppo, according to CNN.
