Russia may forbid ‘gay emojis’ from social media after claims that the icons are illegal under tough laws about homosexual ‘propaganda’.
The country’s Izvestia newspaper has carried reports that a probe into emojis has begun after a complaint from a senator, Mikhail Marchenko.
They report that he believes the ’emojis’, which show smiley-faced same sex couples may infringe legislation introduced in 2013 which forbids publicity for what they term ‘non-traditional sexual relationships’.
The controversial laws, which have received widespread criticism, allows the government to block access in Russia to websites which they deem to promote homosexuality.
