Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem arrived in Iran Tuesday to meet his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif to discuss the situation in the region, the official IRNA news agency reported.
His visit comes with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, President Vladimir Putin’s special Middle East representative, also in Tehran.
IRNA said Bogdanov and Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian discussed “the situation in Syria and the region.”
Iran and Russia are the two main allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Tehran backs him both financially and militarily by sending military advisers.
However, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday claimed that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin indicted to him in recent conversations that he may pull his support for the Syrian regime, in what could be a major regional shift.
