Iranian officials have almost doubled their official death toll from the stampede during the Hajj that left at least 769 people dead.
Iran says that 464 of the dead are Iranian citizens and that there is no hope of finding any other missing pilgrims alive.
Iran and other nations have been critical of Saudi Arabia’s slow response to the incident, lack of security and delays in releasing accurate casualty figures. Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei alluded to military action if the bodies of the victims are not returned and those in hospitals not given proper medical care.
“Saudi Arabia failed to fulfill its duties concerning the desperate wounded,” Khamenei said, according to Iran’s official PressTV. “Should we decide to show any reaction, our reaction will be tough and harsh.”
Saudi Arabia said they would not bury any of the dead without permission from Iran or the families of the dead.
