A gay bar in Manhattan where gays fought with police officers in 1969 riot is now an official city landmark.
The riot began after a raid took place because the Stonewall Inn was serving bootlegged liquor according to police officials. The crowd of patrons from the bar and the surrounding neighborhood attacked police after an arrested woman yelled to the crowd “Why don’t you guys do something?”
Now the New York City Council has made the bar in Manhattan an official New York City Landmark by voting on a recommendation from the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
“It is a tremendous part of our history,” Councilman Corey Johnson, an openly gay Democratic member of the Council, told the New York Daily News. “Because of the real estate boom and pressures we’ve seen in the Village and all across Manhattan, we needed this further level of protection.”
The bar now cannot be torn down and the outside facade cannot be altered with the new designation.
