Western media outlets have been pushing claims from the US and other western governments that Russia is not attacking terrorists in Syria but rather western backed groups and thus driving up instability and extremism in the region.
“These military actions constitute a further escalation and will only fuel more extremism and radicalization,” the US, Germany, France, Great Britain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey said in a statement. “We call on the Russian Federation to immediately cease its attacks on the Syrian opposition and civilians and to focus its efforts on fighting ISIL.”
Russia, for their part, is claiming they’re only targeting terrorists and no western-backed groups. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday at the UN the western-backed Free Syrian Army is not a target and that the group should have a place at the table for the Syrian political process.
“The goal is terrorism,” Lavrov said. “And we are not supporting anyone against their own people.”
“They’re hopping mad in Saudi Arabia, the U.S. And Qatar because of their defeat and the victory of Russia and Syria and the unraveling of the fact that the U.S. and its allies are not serious about fighting [ISIS]”, Syrian lawmaker Sharif Shehadeh told Bloomberg. “Those who claim to be concerned about the Syrian people are the ones slaughtering the Syrian people through the terrorists.”
