U.S. Pacific Command head claims China is militarizing the South China Sea - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) The head of the U.S. Pacific Command told the Senate Armed Services Committee Tuesday China is militarizing the South China Sea.

Adm. Harry Harris said the moves are escalating tensions in the region, according to Navy Times.

Satellite images taken last week show China had installed a battery for surface-to-air missiles on the Paracel Islands, which are near Vietnam. There are also reports China installed a high-tech air search radar on the Spratly Islands. It may be able to detect U.S. stealth aircraft.

Harris believes the U.S. Navy needs next-generation anti-surface missiles to counter the Chinese posturing.

Earlier this year the SM-6 and long range anti-surface missile, launched by aircraft, was announced. Harris said it was a step in the right direction.

The South China Sea is a highly contested area, with many countries laying claim to it, as reported by TRUNEWS.
