High court in Germany will decide whether to ban right-wing National Democratic Party - from TRUNEWS

The Federal Constitutional Court of Germany is hearing arguments on whether to ban the National Democratic Party.

The upper house brought the case before the highest court, arguing the NPD is racist, anti-Semitic and “poses a threat”, arguing the party is “essentially identical” to Adolf Hitler’s platform, according to Deutsche Welle.   It is the second time the court has been asked to stop the group.

The NDP does not have representatives in government but does have members in the Mecklenburg-West Pomerania state assembly, according to BBC.  They have one seat in the European Parliament.

The group has openly objected to the mass migration taking place in Germany, mostly by Syrians, Afghans and people from North Africa.

Since World War Two, Germany has enacted measures to stop the ban of political parties. Only the two houses or government can initiate a procedure to prohibit a group.  Since that time, only two parties have been banned – the Socialist Reich Party and the Communist Party of Germany.

If the court decides against the NDP, the government can seize their assets.

German Justice Minister Heiko Maas said more right-wing parties are gaining momentum as a result of the refugee crisis.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and her party support the case to ban NPD, but they are not a part of the case formally.
