After watching multiple Christian business-owners and professionals being targeted for lawsuits and harassment because they refuse to service a gay marriage event, leaders of the Anglican Church in Australia say they fear the same thing will happen to Christians in Australia should the government approve gay “marriage.”
Robert Forsyth, the Bishop of South Sydney, is recommending that anyone who believes participating in a new Marriage Act violates Christian belief should be able to opt out of legal roles in marriages.
“That question is, in the end, a matter for the individual conscience of each minister in consultation with their parish,” Forsyth wrote.
Australia’s Human Rights Commissioner Tim Wilson has stated that wedding service providers could be exempted from anti-discrimination laws so they would not be forced to compromise their faith-based beliefs in heterosexual marriage.
However, the government is reportedly investigating the Catholic Church because of a booklet opposing gay marriage, saying it “may offend same-sex couples and their families.”
