A Russian nuclear sub carrying missiles that could have a nuclear payload has reached the Pacific after a 4,500 nautical mile journey.
The Alexander Nevsky arrived in the far east port of Vilyuchinsk and was greeted by Russian Navy commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov. A specialized pier was built at Vilyuchinsk specifically for the Borei class of Russian nuclear submarine.
Each of the Bulava missiles onboard the Nevsky could contain up to 10 nuclear warheads. Each missile has a range of more than 5,000 miles.
Russia’s military has announced that they will build 8 Borei-class submarines. The first, the Yuryi Dolgorukiy, went into service with the Northern Fleet in 2013. The third sub has yet to be put into service because it is still undergoing testing.
