Italian officials have informed leaders of the European Union their nation will not allow GMO crops to be grown in their soil.
A government statement released Thursday said Italy was exercising a rule that allows nations to prohibit GMO crops from being grown in their borders. The statement from Italy’s Agriculture, Environment and Health ministers said they were not going to follow a law approved in March that would rush GMO crops into the marketplace.
The EU ruled after years of contentious debate that GMO crops were safe for human consumption.
Germany sent a similar letter on Wednesday and Bulgaria announced they would be opting out of any GMO crops.
