Major Hurricane Joaquin Now Tracking Away from Coastline - from TRUNEWS

Major Hurricane Joaquin, packing maximum sustained winds of over 130 miles per hour, is now showing a track that would place the major parts of the storm out to sea rather than a direct hit to the American mainland.

hurricanetrackfriday1002Still, the storm is expected to bring major amounts of rainfall to coastal areas which could bring significant flash flooding.

“These heavy rains are likely to continue for the next few days, even if the center of Joaquin stays offshore,” the National Hurricane Center said Thursday. “The resulting inland flood potential could complicate preparations for Joaquin should it head toward the coast, and even more substantial inland flooding is possible if Joaquin later passes near or over these same areas.”

Joaquin slammed into the Bahamas Thursday, flooding homes and roads and causing significant damage.  The Bahamas National Emergency Management Agency would not release a casualty count.  Some residents refused to move into shelters as the storm approached, leading government officials to say they will propose a law making evacuations for hurricanes mandatory.
