The National Transportation Safety Board wants the federal government take over the subway system in Washington D.C.
The recommendation is for the Federal Railroad Commission should take charge after several safety failures, including an electrical malfunction earlier in the year. In order for this to happen, Congress would have to pass a law to change the classification of the Metro to a commuter rail network. It is currently controlled by a committee make up of representatives from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.
A train filled with smoke in January inside a tunnel, resulting in the death of one passenger and causing illness in more than 80 others. In 2009, nine people were killed in a crash, and the NTSB claims the Metro has not improved since then. There have also been derailments, fires and faulty doors reported in recent years.
“Without adequate oversight, accidents and incidents will continue to place the riders of the system at risk,” NTSB chairman Christopher Hart wrote in a letter to Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.
But one expert claims funding is the problem. Ron Diridon, emeritus executive director of the Mineta Transportation Institute at San Jose State University told ABC News all mass transportation systems have been starved of funding.
