(TRUNEWS) President Obama made the call for the federal government to have more control and is expected to name a “czar” to assist with the situation.
He was speaking to union members in Detroit Thursday when he made the comments about the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. He also accused Republicans of not meeting the basic needs of people.
Last week, Obama declared a state of emergency in the area and authorized FEMA to coordinate disaster relief efforts.
The local administrator for the EPA has resigned. Earlier this week protesters called for the Gov. Rick Snyder to step down. But he released the emails between his office and the agency, to prove the government took action.
The city had received its water from Detroit until April 2014, until they switched to pumping from the Flint River in a cost cutting move.
When residents began to complain about the taste, officials insisted it was safe.
Many government agencies tested the water throughout the next year and found it to be compliant with federal standards. At one point, city officials refused an offer to reconnect to Detroit water.
Late last year, lead was found in the blood of some children. Flint has since switched back to Detroit water.
According to Breitbart, Flint’s economy is suffering and many of its residents are poor. Money is spent on entitlements or on buying votes from special interest groups, instead of on infrastructure.
