Snow accumulation expectations upped to 30 inches in Baltimore/Washington area - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) The Baltimore/Washington area is now expecting more than 30 inches of snow.

Areas west of the nation’s capital could get even more. It has started snowing lightly in the area, and will continue through Saturday, before it moves on to New England.

Mayor Muriel Bowser told Reuters it will be one of the worst storms in history.

In 2010, in what was referred to as “Snowmageddon”, more than 17 inches fell in the area.

The federal government is closed, and so are most businesses. Shelves were emptied in many stores over the last day, as millions of people stocked up on supplies.

The Weather Channel has reported more than 85 million people in 20 states will be affected with some type of precipitation related to this system.

Widespread power outages are also expected.

Airlines have cancelled almost 6,000 flights for Friday and Saturday.
