Saudis consider giving surface-to-air missiles to Syrian rebels - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) Saudi Araba wants to give surface-to-air missiles to rebels in Syria.

The country has stepped up its denouncement of the Syrian government in recent days by making a number or moves and issuing threats, according to Zero Hedge.

A couple weeks ago, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir announced operation “Northern Thunder” in which more than 350,000 troops from more than 20 Arab countries will get together for training. It was reported by TRUNEWS.

Saudi Arabia wants Syrian President Bashar al-Assad removed from power and has threatened to send troops into the war-torn country.  Assad is allied with Iran, an enemy of Saudi Arabia.

Now Riyadh wants to give weapons to Syrian rebels in order to retake Aleppo, which means they would be shooting at Russian warplanes.

“We believe that introducing surface-to-air-missiles in Syria are going to change the balance of power on the ground,” said Jubeir to Der Spiegel.

The city, which is located in the northern part of the country, is of major strategic importance. It was once held by the opposition but is has been retaken by forces loyal to the Syrian government –  with the help of the Russians, Kurds and Iranian-backed Hezbollah.

This move could strain relations between Saudi Arabia and Russia, just like it has caused a rift between Turkey and the Russians.

The Russian government has also warned of another world war if Saudi Arabia joins the conflict in Syria.
