(TRUNEWS) The recent move by Turkey to strike Kurds in Syria may help fix the rift between the U.S. and Russia.
The Russian news site Gazeta.ru claims both sides have condemned Turkey for shelling the Syrian Kurds (YPG), who the Turks believe to be a terrorist group. Russia and U.S. have been arming the Kurds, believing they can assist in the fight against ISIS in Syria.
“Both countries chastised Turkey for escalating the violence,” asserted Gazeta.ru. “The United States suggested that Ankara and the Kurds should focus on fighting Daesh.”
The Turkish government is fearful empowering the Syrian Kurds would inspire the Kurds in their country to rise up, as reported by TRUNEWS. They have accused the YPG, Russia, Syria and ISIS of trying to form a “terror belt” along its border with Syria, according to ABC. The Turks said they are determined not to let it happen.
This week Moscow and Washington agreed to a cessation of hostilities, but other countries with interests in the region, like Turkey, may cause problems, according to Sputnik. Saudi Arabia has also threatened to send ground troops into Syria.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has promised he will make sure the Syrian government complies with the deal. Syrian state media said President Bashar al-Assad has accepted it and has called for elections to be held April 13.
Strikes will continue against ISIS, al-Nusra and other terror groups because they are not covered in the agreement.
The former Russian Ambassador to Libya, Yemen and Tunisia, Veniamin Popov believes the offensive will continue for a few months and then the political situation will be calmer.
Russia wants Assad to remain in power, the U.S. wants him removed.
