Strong evidence has just been confirmed by scientists that Zika causes Guillain-Barre syndrome – a disease that causes temporary paralysis, blood clots and abnormal heart heat.
Zika, which is transmitted by mosquitos, is spreading like wildfire across the world, especially in South America, according to CBS. Sometimes the virus doesn’t produce any symptoms. The World Health Organization has declared it a global emergency.
The virus is also suspected to be behind a dramatic rise in the number of babies in Brazil being born with microcephaly, but this study didn’t address that.
Before South America, Zika was active in the South Pacific, most notably in Micronesia and French Polynesia, including Tahiti. Researchers analyzed blood from more than 40 people living in that area who came down with Guillain-Barre. Almost all of them had shown signs of having Zika in the recent past.
The scientists also studied whether Guillian-Barre was caused by both Zika virus and dengue, but they concluded dengue did not increase the risk.
Of 100,000 people infected with Zika, researchers think about 24 will develop Guillain-Barre. One researcher, David Smith of Australia’s Curtin University said that number could be flawed because evidence of Zika can be gone from the bloodstream about a week after infection.
