Three school girls abducted in Nigeria, part of increasing trend - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) Gunman in Nigeria abducted three young schoolgirls at Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary in Ikorodu.

The Nation Online has reported the men stormed the school Monday night by breaking the fence that is supposed to protect the property.

“Yea, three female students were taken away by some criminals on Monday night but investigations are on to track them.  At this moment, we cannot give you more information but you will be briefed as events unfold,” said Police Superintendent Dolapo Badmos.

The school was founded in 1996 by the late Reverend Joseph Abiodun Adetiloye.  It is a co-educational Secondary institution of Lagos Anglican Diocese.

The kidnapping is part of a growing trend in the region. On Tuesday, a 13-year-old girl who was abducted and forced into marriage was rescued.

Her family said she was taken in August in southern Nigeria and forced to convert to Islam.   When her parents tried to get her back, they were told she was no longer their daughter.  A social media campaign was started, demanding her release.

In 2014 more than girls were abducted from their school in Chibok, Nigeria by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram.  Some of the girls were married off, some were sold into slavery and others were taken to Chad and Cameroon.

As a result of the kidnappings, many girls are afraid to go to school and have dropped out.
