Pentagon Caves To Allow Transgender Troops - from TRUNEWS

The Pentagon has announced the repeal of its ban on openly serving transgender service members, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced the change Thursday.

The repeal would come five years after a 2011 decision to end the U.S. military’s ban on gays and lesbians serving openly, despite fears – which proved unfounded – that such a move would be too great a burden in wartime and would undermine readiness.

transgender lgbt agenda

The disclosure came the same week that the U.S. Army formally welcomed its new secretary, Eric Fanning, who is the first openly gay leader of a military service branch in U.S. history.

One of the U.S. officials said parts of the repeal would come into effect immediately. But the plan would also direct each branch of the armed services to implement new policies affecting everything from recruiting to housing for transgender troops, the official said.

Republican Representative Mac Thornberry, chairman of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, said Defense Secretary Ash Carter had not answered questions the panel had asked, including about “readiness challenges” for transgender service members.

“If reports are correct, I believe Secretary Carter has put the political agenda of a departing administration ahead of the military’s readiness crisis,” Thornberry said in a statement.

Supporters of transgender rights cheered the news. Ashley Broadway-Mack, president of the American Military Partner Association, said in a statement: “Our transgender service members and their families are breathing a huge sigh of relief.”

The National Center for Transgender Equality estimated last year that 15,000 trans people served in the U.S. military.

The LGBT community has been aggressive in it’s campaign to allow transgender troops, and the Obama administration has been willing to go along with their continued progressive agenda.

Disney World may be target for July 4th terrorist attack - from TRUNEWS

June 30, 2016

VERO BEACH, FL – (TRUNEWS) Orlando’s Walt Disney World may be the target of an Islamic terrorist attack on July 4. The stunning plot is allegedly financed by a man in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) identified as “Dr. Rice.” He is also referred to as “the Sheikh.”

According to emails to city and federal officials, the UAE man offered $25 million to a former law enforcement investigator in the United States to organize the operation.

The informant contacted a Florida-based private investigator who identified himself in an email as a “former FBI operative.” The informant is also a private investigator. TRUNEWS has verified the names and the current professional employment of both men as private investigators in Florida.

The informant contacted the private investigator on May 29, 2016. The date stamp on the email was 4:23 PM. The subject line said: “like to have you in this game.”
The email text stated:

“I have recently and inadvertently come into contact with an individual who purports to be located in the UAE. I have gotten a total of 4 telephone calls from him and a boatload of whatsapp text from an associate of his of which I’ve saved all the call I.D. notations and text. This man carries a thick Indian accent. He has admitted to financing the Manchester United football stadium bombing in the U.K.”

The informant said the UAE man called him on May 18 at 2:10 PM and offered a large amount of U.S. dollars to “do some major damage here in central Florida.” The informant also said “he wants it done on the 4th of July and tells that he has 3 operatives already paid if I am not interested.”

The private investigator immediately passed on the information to an agent at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The email from the investigator to an FBI agent was dated May 29, 2016. Additionally, the private investigator sent the warning to Geraldo Rivera at Fox News, Keith Landry at Fox TV, and Pilar Melendez at CNN. TRUNEWS could not find any evidence that Fox News, Fox TV, or CNN ever publicly reported the threat to strike Walt Disney World (WDW) on July 4.

TRUNEWS obtained the email and subsequent correspondence to Orlando, Orange County, and FBI officials directly from the main website of the Orlando city government. The trove of emails was stored in an unprotected folder without any encryption. No hacking was necessary since the folder was available to anybody who searched the city’s website. TRUNEWS investigative journalists stumbled onto the folder while searching the city’s website for information related to the shooting spree at the Pulse nightclub on June 12.

TRUNEWS is withholding publication of the names, titles, locations, telephone numbers, and email addresses of U.S. law enforcement officials and both informants named in the emails. Some of the emails contain the email addresses of CIA Director John Brennan and FBI Director James Comey.

The private investigator replied to the U.S.-based informant at 9:22 PM on May 29, 2016. He asked the informant:

“So, do you want me to work with you investigating the threats or help get you full immunity from the United States Government, with pay, protection, and all necessary immunity documents to protect you and me, in return for all the information you have and possibly infiltrating said persons and arrest those responsible? You know this sounds crazy what you have written, but it is my job and I have chased down crazier hounds and have gotten great results. Every threat is a threat.”

The informant replied that he didn’t believe he needed to “beg immunity” but would cooperate in an investigation. He also stated, “As soon as the FBI hits this bank account in Dubai I’m dead.”

The informant told the private investigator that the terrorist financier told him that “most times secret accounts are set up in Dubai and the money just transferred into those accounts for the terrorist payments.” He also said the phone call came from “the lab hardline where Dr. Rice who was ultimately referred to as the ‘Sheikh’ offered me 25 million USD to take out Disney.”
According to the informant, the “Sheikh” warned him that if he backs out or fails to carry out the strike against Disney World, “I can look over my shoulder for life waiting to die.”

He also told the private investigator, “The ‘Sheikh’ told me he has 3 WDW employees already paid to do the job if I decide not to and they know of the consequences of their failure. The act is to be completed soon but not within the week my text told me.” WDW refers to Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL.

The informant also mentioned that he thought the threat was credible based on “how the money is brought in paper worldwide.”

TRUNEWS traced the UAE telephone number to a businessman in Dubai who owns a chemical company that appears to be involved in international money laundering. The company promotes itself as “certified experts in cleaning black money (black dollars, euros, pounds) acquired through lottery award winning, security companies, loans, investment funds, charity organizations, and next of kin with SSD Chemical Solution Automatic, Activation powder, mercury powder and other SSD chemicals.”

TRUNEWS also identified the name of the owner, the company’s name, and street address in Dubai. The company is also a “major SSD chemical manufacturer in India.” As a chemical manufacturer, it is possible that “the Sheikh’s” nickname “Dr. Rice” may refer to his ability to manufacture ricin. Ricin is a poison naturally found in castor beans, and has been identified as a potential bioweapon. Ricin is extremely toxic by ingestion, inhalation, and injection. Ingestion of ricin causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gastric hemorrhaging, and shock.

The informant emailed the private investigator on June 12 to notify him that an FBI agent finally visited his home in Florida “almost 2 weeks after you gave them the information and 1 day before the Orlando attack happened.”

Referring to the FBI agent who visited his house, the informant said in an email, “He asked me about all of the other information in my emails about the UAE, money for terrorists, bank accounts, and the other information, but he never asked me about the Central FL threats, Orlando/Disney World threats, the 3 Terrorist Operatives that work at Walt Disney World and are ready to cause Major Damage to Central FL or any of the mentioned pending threats on or before the 4th of July.”

TRUNEWS is in possession of other email correspondence between Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, an Orange County Sheriff’s Department investigator, and various FBI agents regarding the possible threat to attack Walt Disney World on July 4.

TRUNEWS EXCLUSIVE: Chuck Norris’ son poisoned at Amerigeddon movie showing in Ohio - from TRUNEWS

June 30, 2016

VERO BEACH, FL (TRUNEWS) Mike Norris, son of television celebrity and martial arts expert Chuck Norris, says he was poisoned by a mysterious man following the showing of his new film Amerigeddon.

In an exclusive interview with TRUNEWS, film director Mike Norris said he spoke to the audience that attended on Sunday a showing of Amerigeddon in Columbus, Ohio.

12717940_1131382976875014_1884328511304698119_n-677x316_c

Amerigeddon’s plot involves a top secret plot by a U.S. government agency and the United Nations to attack the U.S. energy grid. The movie depicts the U.S.A. ruled under martial law in which citizens are stripped of their constitutional rights and firearms. The coup d’état is overthrown by patriots who fight back to rescue America from irreversible chaos. Billionaire Gary Haevin, founder of Curves fitness chain and CEO of Jenny Craig, provided much of the funding for the production of the movie.

As the film director, Mike Norris has been traveling to various cities across the nation to personally attend the opening showing in theaters. Following the movie, he speaks to the audience and answers questions.

He attended Sunday’s 1:50 PM showing of Amerigeddon at the AMC Theaters in Columbus’ Easton Town Center. The movie ended at 3:32 PM. Mr. Norris told TRUNEWS that a mysterious man wearing a dark grey suit approached Norris in the theater’s lobby. The unknown man brushed Norris’ back, touched his neck, leaned up close to the film director and said, “Interesting film.”

Norris drove to Dayton on Sunday afternoon for the next showing on Sunday evening at the Regal Fairfield Commons theater. During the 7:20 PM showing, Norris started noticing swelling and itching in his face.

After speaking to the audience, the film director went to his Dayton hotel. He was awakened at 3:30 AM by extreme facial pain. Norris told TRUNEWS, “My face was on fire.” A golf ball-size lump had appeared on his neck where the itching had started on Sunday evening. A red rash had spread across his face and neck.

Norris took an early morning flight back to his home in Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX. He immediately sought medical treatment.

His family physician told Norris that the symptoms were not caused by anything internal, inferring that it was caused by contact with some type of poison or toxin. Norris’ doctor is waiting for results from blood tests to determine the source of the poisoning.

Norris told TRUNEWS on Thursday that he is recovering and will resume his personal appearances to promote Amerigeddon. The son of “Walker, Texas Ranger” actor Chuck Norris said he “let my guard down a little bit while I was out there” because he loves talking and mingling with the movie’s fans. The Columbus incident, however, convinced Norris that he can no longer risk traveling alone.

Norris spoke with TRUNEWS investigative journalist Edward Szall in an exclusive interview on Wednesday. He confessed his trust in God to protect him. Norris told TRUNEWS, “I have the armor of God around me…..and I know I’m protected….”

CIA Brennan Says ISIS Plotting Attack on US - from TRUNEWS

CIA Director John Brennan said on Wednesday that the shooting and bomb attack on Istanbul airport that killed at least 41 people was likely carried out by the Islamic State.

In a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations think tank, Brennan, who referred to Islamic State by the acronym, ISIL, said the attacks “bear the hallmarks of ISIL’s depravity”.

brennan

Brennan also said there was still “a ways to go” before significant progress could be claimed against Islamic State’s ability to propagate its narrative and incite attacks.

Because the U.S. is leading the international coalition against the Islamic State, Brennan said, it would be surprising if the group was not plotting attacks within the United States and against U.S. targets abroad.

“It would be surprising to me that ISIL is not trying to hit us both in the region as well as in our homeland,” Brennan said.

Islamic State’s “terrorism capacity and global reach” have not been reduced, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency said on Thursday, adding that the group has tens of thousands of fighters around the world, far more than al Qaeda had at its height.

John Brennan told U.S. lawmakers in a rare public hearing of the Senate Intelligence Committee that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is in a stronger position than he was a year ago, bolstered by Russian air strikes against moderate opposition.

“Despite all our progress against ISIL on the battlefield and in the financial realm, our efforts have not reduced the group’s terrorism and global reach,” Brennan testified, using an acronym for the Islamic State militant group, also known as ISIS.

“We judge that ISIL is training and attempting to deploy operatives for further attacks,” Brennansaid, days after a gunman, who expressed allegiance to Islamic State, killed 49 people in Orlando, Florida.

Brennan‘s testimony raised questions about the effectiveness of the U.S. position on Syria that Assad must leave power and its strategy to “degrade and ultimately defeat” Islamic State.

He told the panel that the CIA had not yet found direct links between the Orlando shooter, Omar Mateen, and any international terrorist organization.

But he said, as in Orlando and the attack in San Bernardino, California, last December, Islamic State is attempting to inspire attacks by sympathizers, even as it explores ways to send operatives to the West via refugee flows, smuggling routes and other methods of travel.

He called such lone wolf attacks “an exceptionally challenging issue for the intelligence community.”

Islamic State will likely change its strategies to make up for battlefield losses and constraints on its finances, he said, and it would probably rely more on “guerrilla tactics,” including high-profile attacks outside territory it holds in Iraq and Syria.

“The resources needed for terrorism are very modest, and the group would have to suffer even heavier losses of territory, manpower and money for its terrorist capacity to decline significantly,” he said.

INTERNATIONAL CLOUT, BRENNAN SAYS

The CIA is concerned about the growth of Libya as a base of operations for Islamic State militants, who have 5,000 to 8,000 fighters there, Brennan said.

“That is very concerning, particularly since Libya is right across from Europe on the Mediterranean with refugee flows that are going there,” he said.

Brennan said the number of Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria had dropped to 18,000 to 22,000 from the CIA’s estimate last year that they may have had as many as 33,000.

Giving updated estimates of the group’s international clout, he said there were “several hundreds, if not over a thousand” hard-core fighters in the Sinai, as well as several hundred in Yemen and hundreds in Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as “maybe 7,000 or so” in Nigeria.

“Nigeria’s another country where Boko Haram is now Islamic State of West Africa, where you have several thousands of individuals who are also on the march waving the ISIL banner,”Brennan said.

Months after Islamic State attacks that caused mass casualties in Paris and Brussels, Brennansaid European Union countries were still not where they needed to be in terms of intelligence sharing.

The CIA and the European Union’s Counter-Terrorism Group have been discussing ways to improve the sharing of intelligence on terrorist threats in the wake of the attacks, Brennan said.

Questioned about the broader crisis, Brennan told lawmakers he believed Assad’s government had been strengthened with Russia’s support.

“A year ago, (Assad) was on his back foot as the opposition forces were carrying out operations that were really degrading the Syrian military. He is in a stronger position than he was in June of last year” as a result of Russian support, Brennan said.

He said a large proportion of strikes by Russia and the Syrian government were directed at what Washington considers to be the moderate opposition fighting Assad.

AG Lynch, Bill Clinton Meet Unannounced At Phoenix Airport - from TRUNEWS

Attorney General Loretta Lynch met with former President Bill Clinton for a half-hour on her government airplane at the Phoenix airport on Tuesday, an Arizona news station is reporting.

The unannounced meeting, which comes as Lynch’s Justice Department is investigating the handling of classified information on Hillary Clinton’s private email server, came to light only when Phoenix’s ABC15 TV station asked Lynch about it during a press conference.

The Obama appointee told the TV station that she and Clinton did not discuss the investigation or any other government business. Instead, she says they talked about Clinton’s grandchildren and golf.

“I did see President Clinton at the Phoenix airport,” she told ABC15.

“As I was leaving and he spoke to myself and my husband on the plane. Our conversation was a great deal about his grandchildren. It was primarily social and about our travels. He mentioned the golf he played in Phoenix.”

ABC15 reported that the meeting on board Lynch’s plane lasted about 30 minutes. The FBI is conducting the email server investigation. Investigators are said to be near the end of their investigation. FBI director James Comey will make a recommendation to Lynch on whether to press charges against Clinton or any of her aides at the end of its probe.

The original article by Chuck Ross appeared on The Daily Caller.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and key aides are vulnerable to three felony charges and one misdemeanor count under the Espionage Act because of the unauthorized transfer of classified documents to her private email server, former national security and law enforcement officials tell The Daily Caller News Foundation.

As many as 150 FBI agents are deployed on the case and FBI Director James Comey and Attorney General Loretta Lynch are reportedly meeting twice weekly to discuss the progress of the investigation.

The FBI is reportedly in the “final stages” of its probe and working closely with members of the Department of Justice’s National Security Division to decide if a prosecution goes forward.

FBI Tells Florida to Deny Public Records Request On Massacre - from TRUNEWS

While Attorney General Loretta Lynch holds firm to her claim that the motive of Orlando terrorist Omar Mateen may never be known, the FBI is instructing Florida agencies that responded to the attack that night to deny requests for public records pertaining to the case.

Mateen called police several times during the three hour ordeal to declare his allegiance to ISIS, yet only a fraction of his discussions with authorities that night have been released to the public — first an edited version, than an unedited one.

fbi

In response to a lawsuit by local media seeking the release of the 911 audio, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office released a letter they got from the FBI instructing them to deny all requests for information and refer news outlets seeking information to the feds, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

The letter reads, in part:

As you know, this is an active, on-going investigation being conducted by the FBI. The FBI considers information obtained from the state and local enforcement agencies in furtherance of its investigation to be evidence or potential evidence. Accordingly, the FBI is concerned that public disclosure of such records or information at this time will adversely affect our ability to effectively investigate the shooting and bring the matter to resolution; could endanger the safety of law enforcement officers, and other individuals who have participated in or are otherwise connected with the investigation; and risks unduly prejudicing any prosecutions that may result from the investigation.

The letter is signed by Paul Wysopal, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Tampa field office.

Those recordings and all records are public records under Florida law and are subject to freedom of information requests.

The “FBI doesn’t have the authority to hijack Florida’s constitution, which guarantees us a right of access to all non-exempt public records,” Barbara Petersen, President of the First Amendment Foundation, told the Orlando Sentinel.

On orders from the FBI, the city of Orlando has thus far refused to release any records, they say, “out of respect for the Pulse shooting victims and the families” and at the “direction of the FBI,” according to the Sentinel.

In the aftermath of the terrorist attack which left 49 people dead and 53 wounded, the White House shifted the narrative away from a terrorist attack to an attempt to impose gun control and claims of homophobia. Mateen was reported to have been a self-loathing gay man, but reports say the FBI has found zero evidence to substantiate that claim.

‘The Punisher’ Duterte Sworn in as Philippines President - from TRUNEWS

Rodrigo Duterte was sworn in as the Philippines’ 16th president on Thursday, capping the unlikely journey of a provincial city mayor whose brash man-of-the-people style and pledges to crush crime swamped establishment rivals in last month’s election.

After making his pledge at the presidential palace in Manila, with one hand on the Bible, Duterte delivered a speech in which he promised a “relentless” and “sustained” fight against corruption, criminality and illegal drugs.

duterte

However, he said these ills were only symptoms of a disease cutting into the moral fiber of society.

“I see the erosion of the people’s trust in our country’s leaders, the erosion of faith in our judicial system, the erosion of confidence in the capacity of our public servants to make the people’s lives better, safer and healthier,” he said.

Duterte tapped into voters’ disgust with the Philippines’ political elite and the failure of successive governments to tackle poverty and inequality, drawing comparisons with Donald Trump and the rise of assertive populists across the globe.

But his defiance of convention has raised concern that economic growth in the Philippines, the fastest of Southeast Asia’s five main economies under his predecessor, could be at risk on his watch.

The political shake-up also adds to uncertainty about Manila’s position in a sometimes-bitter dispute with China over sovereignty in the South China Sea, a key global trade route.

China’s official Xinhua news agency said President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to Duterte, saying he was “willing to work with Duterte to push for improvement of relations between the two countries”.

Duterte‘s new defense minister told Reuters this week that crushing Islamist militants in the south of the country would take precedence over South China Sea disputes.

Duterte‘s election campaign focused almost entirely on the scourges of crime, drug abuse and corruption, and voters were not deterred by repeated warnings from “the Punisher”, in profanity-peppered speeches, to have offenders killed.

In his maiden speech, the president conceded that many believe his methods “are unorthodox and verge on the illegal”. However, the 71-year-old former prosecutor said he knew right from wrong and would abide by the rule of law.

Duterte was mayor for 22 years of the southern city of Davao, where, according to human rights groups, death squads have killed at least 1,400 people since 1998, most of them drug-pushers, addicts, petty criminals and street children.

He denies any involvement in vigilante killings.

NO BANQUET, CHAMPAGNE

In keeping with his unsophisticated manner, the presidential inauguration ceremony was far less elaborate than is customary.

There was a traditional 21-gun salute at Malacanang Palace, a graceful white mansion originally built by Spanish colonialists in the 18th century.

But aides said there was no sumptuous banquet or champagne, just a meal for 627 guests showcasing the country’s culinary heritage, including coconut pith spring rolls, a cheese made from carabao milk and durian tartlets.

Duterte is not known for his sartorial elegance: he usually sports a short-sleeved casual shirt, never wears socks and told Reuters on the hustings that he wouldn’t be seen in a tie. On Thursday, he wore a formal ‘barong’ shirt but TV presenters commented that he appeared to be wearing slip-on loafers.

Indeed, there is little about Duterte that is conventionally presidential.

Aides say he wants to travel in a pick-up truck instead of the president’s bullet-proof Mercedes. And it is still not clear if he will keep a promise to spurn the luxury of the palace and commute daily from Davao, which is two hours from Manila by air.

Few media organizations were invited to the inauguration, the upshot of a furor Duterte unleashed recently when he suggested that corrupt journalists were legitimate targets for assassination.

His incendiary rhetoric and advocacy of extrajudicial killings to stamp out crime have alarmed many who hear echoes of an authoritarian past under the dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

In the weeks since Duterte‘s election victory there has been a jump in the number of suspected drug dealers shot dead by police and anonymous vigilantes, a sign, critics say, that a spiral of violence has already begun.

But this appears to have only augmented his popularity.

Thousands of people belonging to a left-wing activist group marched to an area near the palace, not to protest as they usually do, but to cheer for Duterte.

“Change is indeed coming,” said Sevilla Sayco, a 61-year-old rice farmer from a province north of the capital.

“We are happy because the previous administration paid us no attention. But Duterte is pro-poor,” she said while shopping for shirts with Duterte‘s image on them, among piles of other Duterte merchandise from nail clippers to pens and keychains.

Duterte later invited the leftists into the palace and spoke to them about ideas he had to distribute millions of hectares of public land to farmers and release political prisoners.

He has promised to spread wealth more evenly in a country where over a quarter of the 100 million people are poor.

He gave few details on Thursday of his economic policies but has said he will pursue his predecessor’s infrastructure and fiscal efficiency drives to lift growth to at least 7 percent.

World Markets Take Major Hit After Brexit Vote - from TRUNEWS

European stocks and the pound held on to a third day of gains as the immediate market flurry over Britain’s Brexit vote to pull out of the European Union settled.

The rebound was not enough, however, to offset the sharp losses suffered in the aftermath of last week’s vote which have put global stocks on track for their worst monthly performance since January.

brexit

Renewed concerns over global growth and oversupply have also forced oil prices onto the back foot again following the Brexit vote.

Wall Street shares were expected to open up 0.2 percent, following the lead from European and Asian markets.

The MSCI All-Country World index <.MIWD00000PUS> was up 0.3 percent, but is set to end the month down 1.6 percent, its worst month since a troubled start to the year. It will also be the first time since 2011 that global stocks will have fallen for two successive quarters.

Worries that a weaker Chinese yuan could spark deflation, seen as a key reason for the worst beginning to the year for global stocks, were reignited on Thursday after Reuters reported that China’s central bank was willing to let the currency fall further.

“Since the beginning of the year investors have faced a series of macro changes to the investment landscape,” said Sean Darby, chief global equity strategist at Jefferies, adding that Britain’s decision to leave the European Union last week was only the most recent shock to investor confidence.

The two-day selloff in the aftermath of last week’s vote wiped more than $3 trillion off the value of global stocks. They have recovered about half of that over the past three sessions.

“No doubt global growth will take a short term hit, but it is not going to result in a credit crisis,” said Darby.

Bond markets see Brexit as another significant blow to the world economy with German and Japanese benchmark 10-year government debt yields both falling to historic lows below zero over the past week.

Ultra-low bond yields have brightened the appeal for equities and demand for dividend-yieldingstocks in defensive sectors such as healthcare and food and beverage has risen sharply.

UK BLUE CHIPS RECOVER

The U.K.’s FTSE 100 <.FTSE>, dominated by oil producers that pay out generous dividends and global healthcare and consumer stocks such as AstraZeneca <AZN.L> and Unilever <ULVR.L>, is back above levels before last week’s vote.

The more domestically focused U.K. midcaps <.FTMC> extended its recovery though remained more than 7 percent below pre-referendum levels underscoring concerns over the local economy.

Shares of UK and European banks <.SX7P>, a center of concern since Britain shocked global financial markets on Friday, have been the hardest hit during the recent sell-off continued to underperform.

They remain the worst performing sectors this year in their respective markets with Deutsche Bank <DBKGn.DE> hitting another record low after the bank failed a U.S. stress test.

In currencies, sterling <GBP=D4> was up 0.2 percent at $1.3448, putting distance between a 31-year trough of $1.3122 touched on Monday. It has still lost more than 6 percent in the quarter.

Sterling added gains slightly after former London mayor Boris Johnson abruptly pulled out of the race to become Britain’s next prime minister.

The euro, another casualty in the days after Brexit, fetched$1.1150 after reaching $1.0912 on Friday, its lowest since March.

Crude oil prices retraced some of their gains from Wednesday’s sharp rally as fears over strike outages in Norway abated.

Brent crude <LCOc1> fell 0.9 percent to $50.18 a barrel after jumping more than 4 percent overnight, thanks to a larger-than-expected drawdown in U.S. crude inventories. [O/R]

Oil has mostly recovered what it lost after the Brexit shock. For the quarter, Brent has risen 26 percent on hopes that declining production in some countries would ease a global glut.

EU Ready to Prop Up Banks Following Brexit Vote - from TRUNEWS

that may follow the Brexit vote in the coming weeks and months, the vice president of the EU executive said on Thursday.

After the British referendum on June 23, “the European Commission, the European Central Bank, other central banks and all relevant authorities continue to cooperate closely to ensure an appropriate response to whatever turbulence there might be in markets,” Valdis Dombrovskis, who is in charge of the euro at the European Commission, told a conference in Brussels.

Dombrovskis will be responsible for financial services at the European Commission from mid-July after the resignation last week of the British commissioner Jonathan Hill, following Brexit.

The European Commission does not expect any new countries to join the euro zone for at least the next three years, one of the vice presidents of the EU executive said on Thursday.

“There is not going to be euro area enlargement in the next at least three years,” Valdis Dombrovskis, who is in charge of the euro at the European Commission, told a conference after being asked whether Brexit might lead to euro zone expansion.

Currently, 19 countries are members of the single currency union, out of 28 members of the European Union. The EU will shrink to 27 countries once Britain has concluded the process to leave the bloc.

The Brexit vote prompted reactions from a number of markets worldwide.  Asian markets tumbled in response, as well as US Markets.  There has been a rebound in international markets since the vote earlier in June.

ISIS Terrorists Use Distraction in Istanbul Airport Strike - from TRUNEWS

Three suspected Islamic State suicide bombers who killed 42 people in a gun and bomb attack at Istanbul airport this week were from Russia, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, a Turkish government official said on Thursday.

The attack on Europe’s third-busiest airport was the deadliest in a series of suicide bombings in Turkey this year.

The three bombers opened fire to create panic outside, before two of them got inside the terminal building and blew themselves up. The third detonated his explosives at the entrance. A further 239 people were wounded.

The official gave no further details beyond confirming the attackers’ nationalities and declined to be named because details of the investigation have not yet been released. Investigators had been struggling to identify the bombers from their limited remains, officials said earlier.

“A medical team is working around the clock to conclude the identification process,” one of the officials said.

The pro-government Yeni Safak newspaper said the Russian bomber was from Dagestan, which borders Chechnya, where Moscow has led two wars against separatists and religious militants since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

The Kyrgyz security service declined to comment, while the Uzbek security service could not immediately be reached.

Turkish police detained 13 people, three of them foreigners, in raids across Istanbul in connection with Tuesday night’s attack.

Counter-terrorism teams led by police special forces launched simultaneous raids at 16 locations in the city, two officials told Reuters. Turkish authorities have said they believe Islamic State was behind the airport attack.

Yeni Safak said the organizer of the attack was suspected to be a man called Akhmed Chatayev, of Chechen origin. Chatayev is identified on a United Nations sanctions list as a leader in Islamic State responsible for training Russian-speaking militants, and as wanted by Russian authorities.

The Hurriyet newspaper named one of the attackers as Osman Vadinov, also Chechen, and said he had come from Raqqa, the heart of Islamic State-controlled territory in Syria.

Turkish officials did not confirm to Reuters that either Chatayev or Vadinov were part of the investigation.

GROWING THREATS

Wars in neighboring Syria and Iraq have fostered a home-grown Islamic State network blamed for a series of suicide bombings in Turkey, including two others this year targeting foreign tourists in the heart of Istanbul.

Islamic State has established a self-declared caliphate on swathes of both Syria and Iraq and declared war on all non-Muslims plus Muslims who do not accept its ultra-hardline vision of Sunni Islam. It has claimed responsibility for similar bomb and gun attacks in Belgium and France in the past year.

Turkey, a member of the NATO military alliance and part of the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State, has repeatedly fired back on the Sunni hardliners in recent months after rocket fire from northern Syria hit the border town of Kilis.

In a sign of the growing threats to Turkey, U.S. defense sources said on Wednesday that Washington was moving towards permanently banning families from accompanying U.S. military and civilian personnel deployed in the country.

Critics say Turkey woke up too late to the threat from Islamic State, focusing instead in the early part of the Syrian civil war on trying to oust President Bashar al-Assad, arguing there could be no peace without his departure.

Once a reluctant partner in the fight against Islamic State, Ankara adjusted its military rules of engagement this month to allow NATO allies to carry out more patrol flights along its border with Syria.

It has also carried out repeated raids on suspected Islamic State safe houses in Turkey.

Nine suspected militants, thought to have been in contact with Islamic State members in Syria, were detained in dawn raids in four districts of the Aegean coastal city of Izmir on Thursday, the state-run Anadolu news agency said.

It said they were accused of financing, recruiting and providing logistical support to the group.

The military killed two suspected Islamic State members trying to enter Turkey illegally at the weekend, security sources said on Thursday.

One of the suspects, a Syrian national, was thought to have been plotting a suicide bomb attack in either the capital Ankara or the southern province of Adana, home to Incirlik, a major base used by U.S. and Turkish forces through which some coalition air strikes against Islamic State are carried out.

Puerto Rico Default Imminent Despite Rescue Plan - from TRUNEWS

Investors in Puerto Rico‘s debt-burdened economy still face risks of default on some of the island’s $70 billion in debt even after the U.S. Congress on Wednesday created a powerful federal oversight board to manage credit restructurings.

U.S. President Barack Obama says he will quickly sign the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA) before the U.S. territory faces a possible default on July 1 on $1.9 billion worth of debt payments.

While the government of Puerto Rico says it cannot honor all of its debts, and will likely default for a fourth time in the last year on some of its bonds, some creditors could get their payments via insurers or reserve funds.

“Regardless of the creation of the oversight board, the missed payments on July 1 will constitute defaults,” said Ted Hampton, senior credit officer at Moody’s Investors Service.

The July 1st payment includes roughly $780 million worth of General Obligation (GO) bonds, its most senior credit that is supposed to be paid out before all others.

“I expect they will not cover all of the GO payment. That would be their first GO default in all of this, which is one reason why many people involved at the U.S. Treasury, in Congress, in the government of Puerto Rico saw a lot of urgency in enacting PROMESA before July 1,” Hampton said.

According to Hampton, Puerto Rico has already missed approximately $562 million worth of debt payments through June 30th.

PROMESA provides the market with more clarity and lowers the chances of a chaotic legal fight by providing a stay, or halt, to any creditor litigation brought against the Puerto Rican government and its debt issuing agencies that is retroactive to December.

If the control board, appointed by Obama with Congressional input, can implement reforms, bring the island’s financial situation under control, and repay all of its debt, it will “enable Puerto Rico to be self-sufficient and able to sell bonds in the future for its operating and capital needs,” Dick Larkin, credit analysis director at Stoever Glass & Co.

PROMESA, a rare bi-partisan compromise, passed the Senate on Wednesday by a vote of 68 to 30. The House of Representatives passed it on June 9.

INSURERS ON THE HOOK

The risk of defaults is not eliminated by PROMESA, but the reduction of uncertainty is greatly welcomed after months of mostly dead-end talks between creditors and the government.

“The reality is that for all of the negative catalysts that lie ahead, credit markets and insurers are relieved that they now get to deal with adults, that is talk with a control board, rather than the governor and his staff,” said Height Securities analyst Daniel Hanson.

The stock prices for the three publicly traded monoline insurance companies with exposure toPuerto Rican debt rose as the likelihood of PROMESA passing increased on Wednesday.

Hundreds of millions of dollars of Puerto Rico‘s July 1 payments are covered by insurance, including about $364 million by Assured Guaranty, according to public records and a company spokeswoman. About $184 million of that covers GO debt. Assured has more than $5 billion in total Puerto Rico exposure. Its stock rose 3.56 percent to $24.67 per share.

MBIA’s National Public Finance Guarantee reported that about $350 million of its total $4.29 billion in Puerto Rico exposure comes due on July 1, including about $173 million in GO bonds. Its stock gained 4.28 percent to $6.81 per share.

Ambac, which insures more than $2 billion of Puerto Rican bonds, is on the hook for $122 million in principal and interest due on July 1, including some $40 million in GO or GO-guaranteed debt, according to the company’s public documents. Ambac shares climbed 5.10 percent to $15.84.

A spokesperson for Financial Guaranty Insurance Company (FGIC), which insures more than $1 billion in total Puerto Rican debt, could not be immediately reached on Wednesday.

Puerto Rico‘s benchmark 2035 General Obligation bond rose 1 full point in price ahead of the final vote, to trade at 66.75 points, pushing the yield down to 12.663 percent..

Moody’s rates this debt Caa3, which it believes implies creditors holding the bonds will have a recovery rate in a range of 65 to 80 percent of principal and interest.

“Dealing with PROMESA allows the insurers to trade some payments in the short-run for higher recoveries in the long-run. Ultimately that is a better business proposition for them than having to continue to limp along and never reach a deal,” said Hanson.

Putin Questions UK’s Commitment to Democracy after Brexit - from TRUNEWS

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday the market turbulence caused by Britain’s vote to leave the European Union will subside in the medium term but it remains to be seen if Britain will uphold its democratic principles.

Addressing his biannual meeting with Russian ambassadors abroad and special envoys, Putin said Russia had not influenced the British referendum.

putin

“I would like to stress yet again that the so-called Brexit is the choice of the British people, we did not interfere with this process and are not tampering with it in anyway,” he said.

“Now let’s see how they will implement the principles of democracy,” Putin said. “The referendum results … have rocked the markets, but in the medium term everything will recover.”

Britain’s decision to quit the European Union could send damaging shockwaves through the bedrock Anglo-American “special relationship,” raising questions about London’s willingness and ability to back U.S.-led efforts in global crises ranging from the Middle East to Ukraine.

The loss of the strongest pro-U.S. voice within the 28-nation bloc, as a result of the “Brexit” referendum, threatens to weaken Washington’s influence in European policymaking and embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin to further challenge the West, analysts and former diplomats say.

The British referendum on Thursday, widely seen as reflecting an increasingly nationalistic and inward-looking public, also risks the splintering of the United Kingdom itself, which could further reduce its role and stature in world affairs.

Britain’s departure — which is not immediate and must be negotiated with the EU — could present the next U.S. president with a decision on whether to turn to other key European partners like Germany and France, essentially downgrading a special U.S. bond with London forged in World War Two.

London Mayor Shocks UK Prime Minister Race - from TRUNEWS

Former London mayor Boris Johnson abruptly pulled out of the race to become Britain’s next prime minister on Thursday, in a shock move that upturned a political order shaken by last week’s vote to leave the European Union.

Johnson, whose support for the campaign to leave the EU was widely considered one of the decisive factors in the campaign, had been bookmakers’ runaway favorite to succeed David Cameron, who quit last week after failing to persuade British voters to stay in the bloc.

The former London mayor and his unexpected departure from the race, announced just minutes before the party unveiled the list of candidates, shows the speed with which the political landscape is being reshaped.

“I must tell you, my friends, you who have waited faithfully for the punchline of this speech, that having consulted colleagues and in view of the circumstances in parliament, I have concluded that person cannot be me,” Johnson said at a news conference to audible gasps.

Cameron’s replacement will face tough talks with the EU to mend a broken relationship — balancing a desire to reduce immigration to Britain while trying to secure the economy by maintaining access to European markets.

Johnson‘s departure from the race followed swiftly after another leading ally in the pro-Brexit campaign, Justice Secretary Michael Gove, put himself forward as a candidate, saying he had withdrawn support for Johnson.

Gove will face off against Theresa May, the interior minister, who campaigned to remain in the EU, as well as other candidates for the ruling party’s leadership.

Paris Attack Gun Came from ‘Fast and Furious’ - from TRUNEWS

One of the guns used in the November 13, 2015 Paris terrorist attacks came from Phoenix, Arizona where the Obama administration allowed criminals to buy thousands of weapons illegally in a deadly and futile “gun-walking” operation known as “Fast and Furious.”

A Report of Investigation (ROI) filed by a case agent in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) tracked the gun used in the Paris attacks to a Phoenix gun owner who sold it illegally, “off book,” Judicial Watch’s law enforcement sources confirm. Federal agents tracing the firearm also found the Phoenix gun owner to be in possession of an unregistered fully automatic weapon, according to law enforcement officials with firsthand knowledge of the investigation.

fast and furious

The investigative follow up of the Paris weapon consisted of tracking a paper trail using a 4473 form, which documents a gun’s ownership history by, among other things, using serial numbers. The Phoenix gun owner that the weapon was traced back to was found to have at least two federal firearms violations—for selling one weapon illegally and possessing an unregistered automatic—but no enforcement or prosecutorial action was taken against the individual. Instead, ATF leaders went out of their way to keep the information under the radar and ensure that the gun owner’s identity was “kept quiet,” according to law enforcement sources involved with the case. “Agents were told, in the process of taking the fully auto, not to anger the seller to prevent him from going public,” a veteran law enforcement official told Judicial Watch.

It’s not clear if the agency, which is responsible for cracking down on the illegal use and trafficking of firearms, did this because the individual was involved in the Fast and Furious gun-running scheme. An ATF spokesman, Corey Ray, at the agency’s Washington D.C. headquarters told Judicial Watch that “no firearms used in the Paris attacks have been traced” by the agency. When asked about the ROI report linking the weapon used in Paris to Phoenix, Ray said “I’m not familiar with the report you’re referencing.” Judicial Watch also tried contacting the Phoenix ATF office, but multiple calls were not returned.

The ATF ran the Fast and Furious experiment and actually allowed criminals, “straw purchasers,” working for Mexican drug cartels to buy weapons at federally licensed firearms dealers in Phoenix and allowed the guns to be “walked”—possessed without any knowledge of their whereabouts. The government lost track of most of the weapons and many have been used to murder hundreds of innocent people as well as a U.S. Border Patrol agent, Brian Terry, in Arizona. A mainstream newspaper reported that a Muslim terrorist who planned to murder attendees of a Muhammad cartoon contest in Garland, Texas last year bought a 9-millimeter pistol at a Phoenix gun shop that participated in the ATF’s Fast and Furious program despite drug and assault charges that should have raised red flags. Judicial Watch has thoroughly investigated Fast and Furious and has sued the Obama administration for information about the once-secret operation.

TRUNEWS EXECLUSIVE: Orlando’s Walt Disney World may be target for July 4 terrorist attack - from TRUNEWS

Rice and Obama’s campaign head war-gamed politicizing Benghazi - from TRUNEWS

(DailyCaller) The day before Susan Rice appeared on five separate Sunday morning TV talk shows to blame the Sept. 11, 2012 Benghazi attacks on a YouTube video, the then-U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations participated in a telephone conference call with David Plouffe, the manager of President Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.

That revelation, which is laid out in the House Select Committee on Benghazi’s report, released on Tuesday, lends more evidence to support the claim that the White House blamed the YouTube video for political purposes.

In addition to Plouffe and Rice, Obama’s controversial deputy national security advisor Benjamin Rhodes took part in the call.

Rhodes is the guru who crafted the administration’s Iran nuclear deal sales pitch. In a recent New York Times profile, the former aspiring novelist acknowledged manipulating the media in order to spin the deal, which removes sanctions against Iran.

On the Sunday morning talk show circuit, Rice claimed that the attacks, which left four Americans dead, were “spontaneous” and not premeditated.

“Our current best assessment, based on the information that we have at present, is that, in fact, what this began as, it was a spontaneous — not a premeditated — response to what had transpired in Cairo,” Rice said during an appearance on ABC News.

“In Cairo, as you know, a few hours earlier, there was a violent protest that was undertaken in reaction to this very offensive video that was disseminated.”

That claim was panned almost instantaneously. Administration critics saw it as political spin intended to protect Obama ahead of the November 2012 election. And as emails cited in the Benghazi Committee’s report show, State Department officials saw it as an overreach as well.

One press official working in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs said Rice was “off the reservation” with her claims. Another said that Rice’s comments showed that “[The White House is] very worried about the politics.”

“This was all their doing,” he wrote in an email to colleagues cited in the Benghazi Committee’s final report.

The report also notes that while Rice met with Plouffe and Rhodes to go over talking points, “nobody from the Federal Bureau of Investigation [FBI], Department of Defense, or Central Intelligence Agency participated in the call.”

The teleconference “apparently consisted of just a small circle of Rice’s advisors and communications staffers from the White House.”

Rice considered Plouffe’s participation in the prep call unusual, according to Benghazi Committee Republicans, who authored the final report.

“While Rhodes testified Plouffe would ‘normally’ appear on the Sunday show prep calls, Rice testified she did not recall Plouffe being on prior calls and did not understand why he was on the call in this instance,” the 800-page document reads.

“Do you have any understanding of why Mr. Plouffe was on this call in particular?” Rice was asked in her interview.

“I don’t,” she said.

“I don’t recall David being on other calls, but I remember other White House communications people being on the calls,” she said.

Rice also said that a State Department official who she could not recall took part in the call.

Asked if that person was then-State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, Rice said: “Honestly , I don’t remember. But she would’ve been the logical person.”

Nuland is the official who told Fox News reporter James Rosen during a 2012 press conference that the Obama administration was not conducting bi-lateral nuclear negotiations with Iran. But the New York Times profile of Rhodes, the Obama advisor, revealed that negotiations had been underway at that point.

During a Dec. 3, 2013 State Department press briefing, Rosen asked spokeswoman Jen Psaki whether Nuland had not lied about the negotiations. A State Department official ordered that exchange scrubbed from a video of the press briefing.

The editing of the video has been cited as another example of the Obama administration attempting to cover up politically inconvenient information.

Clinton Staffer Well Aware of Private Email Server - from TRUNEWS

The recent release of House Benghazi Committee interview transcripts includes one from a now-retired State Department official who appears to have given inconsistent statements about his knowledge of a Hillary Clinton email server.

During an interview with the committee last year, John Bentel, the former director of the Executive Secretariat’s information resource management division, which manages records and communications for State Department’s leadership, claimed he had no knowledge of Clinton’s use of personal email account or private server.

clinton email

Hillary Clinton continues to be dogged by her email scandal, even as aides run interference for her.

But emails recently released by Judicial Watch — as well as findings laid out in a recent State Department inspector general’s report — appear to show that he was involved in discussions about Clinton’s email use. He also received a memo in March 2009 which showed that Clinton’s private server was set to be installed at her New York residence.

Further complicating the matter are questions from Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, who has asked Bentel whether his legal expenses are being paid by Clinton or some of her associates.

Bentel, through his lawyer, Beltway veteran Randy Turk, recently refused to answer that question. He also declined Grassley’s request for a meeting. Likewise, Bentel refused to meet with the State Department inspector general. He is also reportedly not responding to requests from current State Department officials.

Bentel, who retired in 2012, first talked to investigators about Clinton’s email system during a June 30, 2015 interview with the Benghazi Committee. During that session he claimed to have no knowledge of Clinton’s email practices.

He said that he was “not aware” of “any conversations that Secretary Clinton or a representative on her behalf had with [redacted] or anyone else in her division about establishing an official email account.”

And asked when he first learned that Clinton used a personal email account and server, Bentel said the occurred “whenever it came out” in “the papers.”

“So you as the director of the IT services for the principals of the State Department was not — you were not consulted in any way regarding her use of a personal email account for official business?” Bentel was asked.

“No,” he said.

But emails referenced in State’s IG report and recently released by Judicial Watch cast doubt on those claims.

In one Aug. 30, 2011 email, Bentel told Clinton aide Monica Hanley that his division had already created a State Department email account for the then-secretary of state.

“We actually have an account previously set up: SSHRC@state.gov,” he wrote.

“There are some old emails, but none since Jan ’11 — we could get rid of them,” he continued, adding that “you should be aware that any email would go through the Department’s infrastructure and subject to FOIA searches.”

Bentel was also a recipient of a March 17, 2009 email with the subject line “Secretary Residential Installation Hotwash.”

The document listed communications hardware that was set to be installed at Clinton’s New York residence.

The first item on the list is a “server,” which is described as an unclassified partner system. It was to be located in the bathroom closet of Clinton’s basement, according to the document.

The State Department IG report has perhaps the most damning evidence undermining Bentel’s claims.

Two staffers working under Bentel told IG investigators that they met separately with him in late 2010 to express their concerns and frustrations over Clinton’s email system.

They said that Bentel dismissed their concerns, claiming — falsely, it turns out — that the system had been approved by State’s legal office.

“According to the staff member, the Director stated that the Secretary’s personal system had been reviewed and approved by Department legal staff and that the matter was not to be discussed any further,” the IG’s report reads, noting that the State Department’s office of the legal adviser never signed off on Clinton’s server.

“According to the other S/ES-IRM staff member who raised concerns about the server, the Director stated that the mission of S/ES-IRM is to support the Secretary and instructed the staff never to speak of the Secretary’s personal email system again,” the report continues.

If Bentel did indeed mislead the Benghazi Committee, he wouldn’t face criminal charges. He was not placed under oath during the meeting, which was not bound by the rules of evidence.

But any false claims could have a negative impact on Clinton if Grassley’s hunch about Bentel is accurate.

The Iowa Republican has repeatedly pressed Bentel and his attorney, Beltway veteran Randy Turk, about whether the retired government official has made any arrangements with Clinton to help cover his legal costs.

In a letter sent to Grassley earlier this month, Turk declined to provide an answer to that question.

“We and Mr. Bentel also again respectfully decline to answer your questions regarding our professional relationship with our client,” he wrote. (RELATED: ‘Filegate’ Attorney Represents State Dept. Official Who Is Silent On Hillary’s Server)

But Turk, who did not respond to requests for comment, has ties to previous Clinton scandals.

As The Daily Caller has previously reported, Turk represented a White House official in the 1990s named Craig Livingstone who was implicated in the so-called “FileGate” scandal. Livingstone, who was head of White House personnel security, was accused of improperly handling FBI files of hundreds of Reagan and George W. Bush White House officials.

Livingstone was never charged in the case, but it later came to light that the Clintons helped fund his legal defense. The Clintons solicited donations from friends and allies to help pay for Turk’s services.

AeroFarms, the future of feeding cities - from TRUNEWS

(Reuters) The world’s largest vertical farm aims to feed the masses in urban centers by controlling the pain points of agriculture and eliminating seasons and transport costs. Sharon Reich reports.

Odds are this isn’t like other farms you’re used to. Located in a warehouse in an urban New Jersey neighborhood, Aerofarms grows crops year-round without using soil or sunlight. The company has an ambitious goal: to grow high-yielding crops using economical methods that will provide locally sourced food to the community.

David Rosenberg, the CEO of AeroFarms, said:

“We need a new way to feed our planet. Aerofarms presents one of the solutions to do so. Here we can grow in cities, in warehouses in cities, so we’re close to where the mouths are, reducing those transport miles and basically do more with less. That’s what we need to do. We use to grow our plants, about 95 percent less water to grow the plants, about 50 percent less fertilizer as nutrients and … zero pesticides, herbicides, fungicides.”

Inside, the 30,000 square foot building (2,800 square meter) are crops of kale, arugula and watercress illuminated by rows of light emitting diodes, or LED lamps, and planted in white fabric made from recycled water bottles. The levels of light, temperature and nutrients reaching each plant in the tall columns are controlled using what AeroFarms describes as a patented growing algorithm.

Marc Oshima, Aerofarms Co-founder and Chief marketing officer, said:

“We can take that exact same seed for leafy greens that out in the field can take 30-45 days to grow and grow it in 12-16 days. It’s always about optimizing. We’re giving it the right nutrients. So we’re looking at the macro nutrients, the micro nutrients, we are adjusting based on the plant variety, the stage of maturation, and we’re able to again, deliver a higher quality product more consistently all year round.”

The result according to Oshima – a farm that can be 75 times more productive. The company’s model also eliminates transportation of crops from grow states like California and Arizona to consumers in the Northeast. While they aren’t saying just how much food they produce, plans are in development for a larger Newark facility, and 25 more farms in the United States and abroad over the next five years. If growth continues at that rate we could one day see our cities rival the countryside as the home of agriculture.

Islam Bigger Threat Than China in the Philippines - from TRUNEWS

Crushing Islamist militants in the Philippines will take precedence over territorial disputes in the South China Sea, the incoming defense minister said on Wednesday, and spending on military hardware would reflect that.

Ongoing kidnappings and the recent beheading of Western hostages by Abu Sayyaf rebels were hurting the country’s reputation, and incoming president Rodrigo Duterte was frustrated by the failure to rein in the group, Delfin Lorenzana told Reuters.

He said the military would invest in more speed boats and helicopters to help flush out the group based on southern Jolo island, rather than divert funds into maritime security amid rising tensions and militarization in the South China Sea.

“These illegal activities, including kidnapping, must stop,” Lorenzana, a former army general, said in his first interview with foreign media since being named defense minister. He is formally appointed on Thursday, along with Duterte.

“I share the frustrations of the president and our people. We have to end this once and for all. This problem is giving us a very bad image abroad.”

Abu Sayyaf is believed to be linked to al Qaeda, and has also claimed it has ties to rival jihadi movement Islamic State, although in the latter case, authorities say there are no proven operational ties.

FOREIGN PRESSURE ON THE PHILIPPINES

Despite years of military offensives, the Philippines has made little concrete progress towards defeating Abu Sayyaf, since the group started operating in the 1990s.

Experts say that its network is funded in part by ransom money worth tens of millions of dollars, which it has used to buy modern boats, technology and weapons.

Manila is under renewed pressure to tackle Abu Sayyaf following the recent decapitation of two Canadian hostages and the kidnapping of Indonesian sailors which led to the suspension of coal shipments from the Philippines’ main supplier.

The militants are holding at least 14 hostages to ransom – one Dutch, one Norwegian, five Filipinos and seven Indonesians.

Lorenzana’s comments about his defense priorities will add to uncertainty about Duterte’s position on the Philippines’ sometimes bitter dispute with China over sovereignty in the South China Sea, a key global trade route.

Relations between the countries are particularly sensitive now, with an international tribunal in The Hague preparing to rule in a case brought by Manila that could undermine Beijing’s claims to the disputed waters.

Duterte has been accused of flip-flopping, saying he would confront Beijing but also saying that he would engage through dialogue.

China claims almost the entire sea. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims.

Lorenzana said the defense budget should be spent on winning security at home rather than buying fighter jets to protect its waters, as the Philippines would not be going to war with any country. However, he said sovereignty was still a key issue.

“We cannot ignore the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) because that is in our mandate,” he said. “It’s both a resource and a sovereignty issue.”

Lorenzana, a Mindanao-born former special forces commander, said a plan was in place to take on Abu Sayyaf, although he declined to give specifics. He said the military would also assist Duterte’s crime-fighting agenda.

“Our focus will be the Abu Sayyaf issue. Next will be to support the police in their all-out war against crime and drugs,” he said.
