Obama cites historic gay protests on ‘Loyalty Day’ - from TRUNEWS

In what is almost certainly a presidential first, President Obama highlighted an historic gay rights riot as he issued the annual “Loyalty Day” proclamation Thursday.

In the presidential decree, Mr. Obama said it was “the understanding that our Union is a constant work in progress that guided our forebears through places like Seneca Falls, Selma, and Stonewall.”

Stonewall is a reference to riots in New York City in 1969 by the gay community…

Bird Flu Found In Hawk In Western Minnesota - from TRUNEWS

A hawk in western Minnesota is the first wild bird in the state to test positive for the bird flu virus since the beginning of an outbreak that’s killed more than 15 million birds in the Midwest this spring, state wildlife officials announced Thursday.

Officials have long said that wild birds could be spreading the flu, but warned that the positive test in the hawk doesn’t prove wild birds are the direct cause of the recent infections.

“This bird tells us our surveillance is working, but it unfortunately doesn’t provide many other clues about transmission of the virus,” Lou Cornicelli, wildlife research manager for the Department of Natural Resources, said in a statement.

Scientists and industry officials have said the virus also may be reaching captive birds via the feet of humans and rodents, or is being carried in by trucks, equipment, crates and egg flats.

Bird flu strikes another 5.5 million Iowa chickens - from TRUNEWS

Rembrandt Foods, one of the nation’s largest egg suppliers, said Thursday a 5.5 million egg-laying facility in Buena Vista County is believed to be infected with avian influenza.

It was one of five new bird-flu cases the Iowa Department of Agriculture reported Thursday. It pushes to 17 the total number of outbreaks of bird flu. An estimated 15 million birds will likely be destroyed.

The 5.5 million hens at the Buena Vista County facility would be the nation’s largest single outbreak.

“Rembrandt Foods takes biosecurity and food safety very seriously,” the company said in a statement. “Our focus over the past several weeks has been to diligently implement enhanced biosecurity procedures.

Rembrandt Foods egg farm could be single largest operation hit by bird flu - from TRUNEWS

The bird flu has struck an egg-laying operation in Iowa owned by prominent Minnesota businessman Glen Taylor, and it could be the single largest casualty yet of the lethal virus sweeping the Upper Midwest poultry industry.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture said Thursday that there was an initial positive test at an egg-laying operation in northwestern Iowa with an estimated 5.5 million birds. Rembrandt Enterprises, one of the nation’s largest egg producers, confirmed the operation is its Rembrandt, Iowa, facility.

Taylor owns Rembrandt, as well as the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Star Tribune.

Also on Thursday, wildlife regulators announced that a hawk in western Minnesota is the state’s first wild bird to test positive for the bird flu, adding more mystery to the virus’ spread.

And three more Minnesota turkey farms were reported stricken by the flu, bringing the number of afflicted farms to 70 and the number of bird deaths to almost 4 million — about 8 percent of the state’s annual turkey production.

In Iowa, even before the Rembrandt disclosure, the H5N2 bird flu this week was confirmed at four other egg-laying farms. Without the Rembrandt farm, the U.S. Department of Agriculture placed the number of doomed chickens in that state at 10 million, about 17 percent of the state’s layer hens. Iowa is the nation’s largest source of eggs; Minnesota is the biggest U.S. turkey producer.

At the Rembrandt facility, the avian flu has been found in one barn containing about 250,000 hens, said Jonathan Spurway, the company’s vice president of marketing and optimization. “It is isolated in that barn.”

Dog Infects Humans With Plague for First Time in US - from TRUNEWS

A plague-infected dog spread the dangerous disease to four Colorado residents, according to a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health officials told ABC News that this the first report of a dog infecting a human with the plague in the U.S.

The dog, a 2-year-old American pit bull terrier, became sick last summer with a fever and jaw rigidity, among other symptoms. The dog’s health declined so quickly that it was euthanized the following day at a local vet’s office, health officials said.

Four days later, the dog’s owner entered the hospital with a fever and a bloody cough that became worse over the next few hours, but an initial blood culture was misidentified, according to the CDC report.

As the patient’s symptoms grew worse, the test was redone and he was found to have been infected with pnumonic plague, according to the CDC report. The remains of the dog were also tested and were found to be positive for the plague bacteria.

Deadly bacteria release sparks concern at Louisiana lab - from TRUNEWS

Officials are investigating how a deadly type of bacteria was released from a high-security laboratory at the Tulane National Primate Center in Louisiana. Officials say there is no risk to the public.

“The fact that they can’t identify how this release occurred is very concerning,” said Richard Ebright, a biosafety expert from Rutgers University in New Jersey, who testified before Congress last summer in the wake of lab incidents at federal agencies involving anthrax, smallpox and a deadly strain of avian influenza.

The Tulane incident involves the release, possibly in November or earlier, of a bacterium called Burkholderia pseudomallei, which is primarily found in Southeast Asia and northern Australia and is spread to humans and animals through direct contact with contaminated soil and water where it can live and grow. Tulane’s research, which has been halted by federal officials, was part of an effort to develop a vaccine against the bacteria. It was conducted mostly with rodents inside a secure biosafety level 3 laboratory with multiple layers of safety equipment that were supposed to ensure the pathogen couldn’t get out.

Yet at least four monkey-like rhesus macaques — that were never used in the experiments and were kept in large outdoor cages in another part of the 500-acre facility — have been exposed to the bacteria, initial tests have found. Two of the macaques became ill in November; both eventually had to be euthanized. Meanwhile, a federal investigator, who became ill 24 hours after visiting the facility in January as part of the ongoing release investigation, has also tested positive for exposure to the bacteria — though it remains unclear whether her exposure may have occurred during international travel and not at the lab.

Chinese, Russian navies to hold joint drills in Mediterranean - from TRUNEWS

The Chinese navy will hold joint exercises with Russia in the Mediterranean this month, China’s Defense Ministry said on Thursday, a further indication of the closer ties between the two countries and of the navy’s increasing ambitions.

Nine ships from the two countries will participate in the drills, including Chinese vessels now on UN anti-piracy patrols in waters off the Horn of Africa, the Defence Ministry spokesman, Geng Yansheng, said at a monthly news briefing in Beijing. The drills will focus on navigation safety, at-sea replenishment, escort missions and live-fire exercises, he said.

Is Radioactive Water Worth Worrying About? - from TRUNEWS

On a sunny lunch hour last June, Tricia Stevens and one of her colleagues from Lush, a cosmetics company with offices in Vancouver, British Columbia, headed to the beach with a collapsible five-gallon jug, a funnel, two zip ties, and a red plastic crate with a prepaid U.P.S. shipping label. They waded into Burrard Inlet and filled the jug with seawater (the same seawater that gives Lush’s Sea Spray Hair Mist its pep), then sealed it up and sent it across the continent, to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, in Massachusetts, where it was tested for radiation. A week later, the results were in: Stevens’s sample had a cesium-137 level of 0.4 becquerels per cubic metre, making it about two thousand times less radioactive than the average banana.

The good news for Stevens, and for the more skittish consumers of her company’s products, was that, besides containing very little cesium-137, her sample showed none of the isotope cesium-134. Whereas cesium-137, which has a half-life of thirty years, has been present in the oceans, in some degree, since the nuclear-weapons tests of the fifties and sixties, cesium-134, which has a half-life of only two years, is a result of far more recent contamination—namely, the 2011 meltdown at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. The fallout from that accident, more than ninety per cent of which ended up in the Pacific, took nearly four years to reach North American waters. Earlier this year, it made landfall in the small town of Ucluelet, British Columbia, where a dockside sample registered 1.4 becquerels per cubic metre of the telltale cesium-134 and about fifteen times the cesium-137 levels of Stevens’s test.

Whether any of this actually matters depends on whom you ask. “There’s a nuclear-power side that’s very quick to be dismissive and say, ‘Don’t worry your pretty little heads, you’re not in harm’s way,’ ” Ken Buesseler, a marine-chemistry researcher at Woods Hole and the organizer of the sampling initiative, told me. “The flip side are the people screaming, you know, ‘Stay out of the Pacific, don’t swim in Monterey, I’m going to move, tell your friends, this is a catastrophe!’ ” At the levels detected in Ucluelet, Buesseler has calculated, you’d need to swim six hours a day for a thousand years to get the radiation equivalent of a dental X-ray.

NATO Says DPR, LPR Fighters in Southeastern Ukraine Follow Russian Orders - from TRUNEWS

NATO Supreme Allied Commander Gen. Philip Breedlove claims that independence fighters of the self-proclaimed people’s republics of Donetsk and Luhansk (DPR and LPR) in southeastern Ukraine are under Russian command.

The United States, the European Union and NATO have repeatedly accused Russia of being involved in the Ukrainian conflict, going as far as to claim that Russia has been sending troops and weapons to aid DPR and LPR in countering the attacks of Kiev forces that launched a special military operation in Ukraine’s southeast in April, 2014.

Russia may be readying for new Ukraine offensive: NATO commander - from TRUNEWS

Russia’s military may be taking advantage of a recent lull in fighting in eastern Ukraine to lay the groundwork for a new military offensive, NATO’s top commander told the U.S. Congress on Thursday.

U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove, the NATO supreme allied commander, said Russian forces had been seeking to “reset and reposition” while protecting battlefield gains, despite a fragile ceasefire agreed in February.

“Many of their actions are consistent with preparations for another offensive,” Breedlove said.

Pressed during the hearing, Breedlove acknowledged he could not predict Moscow’s next move but characterized its ongoing actions as “preparing, training and equipping to have the capacity to again take an offensive.”

“In the past they have not wasted their effort,” Breedlove told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Expert: Terrorist Group Boko Haram Has Killed More Than 10,000 People in Nigeria - from TRUNEWS

The terrorist Group Boko Haram is responsible for the deaths of some 10,000 people in Nigeria “last year alone,” according to Peter Pham, director of the Africa Center Atlantic Council.

The reemergence of the terrorist group in 2010 has been a “cause for concern,” Pham said, “not least because its attacks last year alone left more than 10,000 people dead across northern and central Nigeria and displaced at least 1.5 million others.”

Speaking at a House Homeland Security’s Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence hearing on Wednesday, Pham said in his sworn testimony that Boko Haram has transformed from a small militant group to a “major insurgency seizing and holding large swathes of territory.”

Cash is King: Saudi Arabia Spending Foreign Reserves at Record Speed Read more: http://ift.tt/1bkcxI6 - from TRUNEWS

Saudi Arabia is burning through foreign reserves at an unprecedented pace as the new king’s generosity toward state workers and conflict in the region further strain public finances already damaged by the slump in oil prices.

The kingdom spent $36 billion of the central bank’s net foreign assets – about 5% of the total assets – in February and March alone, the biggest two-month drop on record, according to data released this week that and obtained by Bloomberg.

Contributing partly to the drop was King Salman’s order to grant government employees and pensioners a two-month bonus after he ascended to the throne of the in January.

Salman’s fledgling reign has been marked by a heightening of the country’s rivalry with Iran – due chiefly to the Saudi-led air offensive in Yemen – as well as mounting security threats at home, two factors that resulted in a surge in military spending.

Fannie, Freddie could need $160 billion from U.S.: stress test - from TRUNEWS

If an economic storm thrashes the U.S., federally controlled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could need to draw up to almost $160 billion from the U.S. Treasury, according to a federal report released Thursday.

In “severely adverse” circumstances, the stress test supposes hypothetical conditions, such as a four-percentage-point spike in the unemployment rate to 10% by mid-2016, along with a plunge for economic growth, according to the report from the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which regulates Fannie FNMA, +0.74% and Freddie FMCC, +1.95% Prices for homes and other assets would tumble, while market volatility would shoot higher, and spreads on domestic investment-grade bonds would grow.

Of note, FHFA does not expect these events to occur. The report is an exercise to see how Fannie and Freddie would hold up under extreme duress.

The usually deep sea dwelling oarfish, which can reach eight metres in length and have been known to bite their own tails off, was found dead by a stunned wildlife expert, who had never seen such a sight.

It washed up at the Otago Harbour, near Dunedin, on New Zealand’s South Island.

David Agnew, of the local Department of Conversation, said: “It was really fresh, it had just washed up on the night tide and looking at it, it was a pretty weird looking creature. I have never seen such a fish in 20 years of living here.

Source: Baltimore mayor ordered police to stand down - from TRUNEWS

Despite a firm denial by Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, a senior law enforcement source charges that she gave an order for police to stand down as riots broke out Monday night, raising more questions about whether some of the violence and looting could have been prevented.

The source, who is involved in the enforcement efforts, confirmed to Fox News there was a direct order from the mayor to her police chief Monday night, effectively tying the hands of officers as they were pelted with rocks and bottles.

Asked directly if the mayor was the one who gave that order, the source said: “You are God damn right it was.”

The claim follows criticism of the mayor for, over the weekend, saying they were giving space to those who “wished to destroy.”

By Tuesday night, despite the chaos a day earlier, Baltimore police along with the National Guard and other law enforcement contingents seemed to be restoring order in the city, which was under a curfew overnight.

Prisoner in van said Freddie Gray was ‘trying to injure himself,’ document says Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google Plus Share via Email More Options Resize Text Print Article Comments 2667 - from TRUNEWS

A prisoner sharing a police transport van with Freddie Gray told investigators that he could hear Gray “banging against the walls” of the vehicle and believed that he “was intentionally trying to injure himself,” according to a police document obtained by The Washington Post.

The prisoner, who is currently in jail, was separated from Gray by a metal partition and could not see him. His statement is contained in an application for a search warrant, which is sealed by the court. The Post was given the document under the condition that the prisoner not be named because the person who provided it feared for the inmate’s safety.

The document, written by a Baltimore police investigator, offers the first glimpse of what might have happened inside the van. It is not clear whether any additional evidence backs up the prisoner’s version, which is just one piece of a much larger probe.

Gray was found unconscious in the wagon when it arrived at a police station on April 12. The 25-year-old had suffered a spinal injury and died a week later…

White House dismisses talk of Texas takeover; Guard to ‘monitor’ U.S. troops - from TRUNEWS

The White House tried to reassure Americans and the governor of Texas Wednesday that a planned special U.S. military training operation in several southwestern states is no cause for alarm.

The plans have raised fears among some Texans of a federal occupation.

“In no way will the constitutional rights or civil liberties of any American citizen be infringed upon while this exercise is being conducted,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest.

The military exercise is called Operation Jade Helm 15, and will involve about 1,200 special forces training over eight weeks that will simulate special operations in hostile territory. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered members of the Texas State Guard to “monitor” the federal troops in the upcoming exercise.

Asked by a reporter in the White House press corps whether Texans were expressing “paranoia” or whether their concerns were justified, Mr. Earnest refuted reports that the special forces would be “incognito.”

French soldiers accused of abusing children in Central Africa - from TRUNEWS

France is investigating allegations of child abuse in Central African Republic by soldiers that it sent there to stem an outbreak of sectarian killing, officials said on Wednesday.

The alleged abuse took place between December 2013 and June 2014 at a center for displaced people at M’Poko airport in the capital Bangui, and concerned about 10 children, France’s Defense Ministry said.

“A preliminary investigation by the Paris prosecutor has been open since July 31, 2014,” a Justice Ministry spokesman said. “The investigation is ongoing.” A Defence Ministry source said no suspects had yet been identified.

France intervened in Central Africa, a former French colony, some 18 months ago to stem violence between Christian militias and largely Muslim Seleka rebels who had seized power. It started withdrawing some of its 2,000 troops this year, handing over to UN peacekeepers.

Is that another UFO watching the International Space Station? Mysterious object spotted… - from TRUNEWS

UFO spotters claim to have found another “flying saucer” on a live feed video camera locked on part of the International Space Station (ISS).

The clip posted on YouTube shows what appears to be a small white disc floating near to the huge space station before it disappears out of shot.

Sceptics claim a plethora of alleged UFO sightings on the live feed, available to anyone online, are down to NASA’s bad camera, and the latest is likely to be simply a distorted view of the Moon.

The camera has led to a string of YouTube uploads from alien hunters claiming to have captured the moments other beings observe the ISS, but the footage is invariably dismissed just as quickly by sceptics who argue it is down to poor-quailty camera equipment used by NASA for the feed.

The latest UFO was posted by Streetcap1 on his YouTube channel, which has previously shown similar clips.

Bill proposes Mass. study implementation of fingerprinting, biometrics to reduce welfare fraud - from TRUNEWS

The state’s welfare office would be required to study the feasibility of implementing a “biometric authentication system” under an omnibus budget amendment passed by the House Tuesday.

Under the provision, the Department of Transitional Assistance and the Office of Health and Human Services would be required to study the feasibility of using biometrics – which includes fingerprints – to reduce fraud in public benefit programs.

The language, part of a $15.4 million amendment assembled by the House Committee on Ways and Means, cleared the House on a 158-0 vote Tuesday afternoon.

House Minority Leader Brad Jones, a North Reading Republican, proposed budgetary language on the biometrics study, which was wrapped into a so-called consolidated amendment. According to Jones’ office, fingerprinting has saved state and county governments millions around the country and Texas and New Jersey have contracts for biometric pilot programs.

The notion of fingerprinting welfare recipients is sure to rankle some advocates who previously objected to photo ID on electronic benefit cards.

Gigantic 100-metre sinkhole leaves Ukrainian villagers terrified after reports it has swallowed up homes and looks likely to get even bigger - from TRUNEWS

Spanning 100 meters across and some 60 meters deep, this gigantic hole could be a meteor crater.

But it’s understood to have been caused by something far closer to home – humble salt.

Terrified residents fear their homes will soon vanish after it suddenly opened up in their Ukrainian village, reportedly swallowing seven houses in the process.

Now they are demanding the government act to either stop the hole getting even bigger or move them to a new, safer location.

Problems for the village of Solotvino in the Zakarpatska Oblast region of western Ukraine began 220 years ago when the first salt mines started to appear.

When they were closed down, the mine shafts left behind gradually collected water, which in turn has been slowly dissolving the underground rock formations.

‘We will not obey’: Christian leaders threaten civil disobedience if Supreme Court legalizes gay marriage - from TRUNEWS

“We will not obey.”

That’s the blunt warning a group of prominent religious leaders is sending to the Supreme Court of the United States as they consider same-sex marriage.

“We respectfully warn the Supreme Court not to cross that line,” read a document titled, Pledge in Solidarity to Defend Marriage. “We stand united together in defense of marriage. Make no mistake about our resolve.”

“While there are many things we can endure, redefining marriage is so fundamental to the natural order and the common good that this is the line we must draw and one we cannot and will not cross,” the pledge states.

The signees are a who’s who of religious leaders including former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, National Religious Broadcasters president Jerry Johnson, Pastor John Hagee, and Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan’s Purse.

ISIS using Baltimore riots to recruit ‘dissatisfied’ blacks - from TRUNEWS

ISIS is taking advantage of racial tensions in the U.S. by attempting to recruit dissatisfied Muslims among the American black population.

This according to Abu Saqer, leader of Jihadiya Salafiya, an Islamist militant group in the Gaza Strip. Jihadiya Salafiya represents al-Qaida in Gaza and has made statements in support of ISIS.

Saqer, speaking to WND from Gaza, would not provide further details other than to confirm ISIS is taking advantage of what he described as the “growing movement within the black community toward Islam and the racist policies of the U.S. government.”

Saqer said he was not aware of whether ISIS actually recruited any dissatisfied black Muslims within the U.S. or whether any such cells have been established.

Huckabee: ‘We Are Moving Rapidly Toward the Criminalization of Christianity’ - from TRUNEWS

The persecution of Christians because of their moral opposition to homosexual behavior and so-called gay marriage is on the rise in America, to the point where “Christian convictions are under attack as never before” and “we are moving rapidly toward the criminalization of Christianity,” said former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who is also an ordained Southern Baptist minister.

During an Apr. 23 conference call with conservative pastors arranged by the Family Research Council (FRC), Gov. Huckabee and FRC President Tony Perkins talked about persecution of Christians in the U.S. military, in the business world, and how homosexuality as a “civil right” and same-sex marriage are affecting the social and legal climate.

“I think it’s fair to say that Christian convictions are under attack as never before, not just in our lifetime, but never before in the history of this great republic,” said Huckabee, who was governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007.

Could religious institutions lose tax-exempt status over Supreme Court’s gay marriage case? Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google Plus Share via Email More Options Resize Text Print Article Comments - from TRUNEWS

The Supreme Court Tuesday considered whether same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry, raising questions about how it would affect religious institutions.

During oral arguments, Justice Samuel Alito compared the case to that of Bob Jones University, a fundamentalist Christian university in South Carolina. The Supreme Court ruled in 1983 the school was not entitled to a tax-exempt status if it barred interracial marriage.

Here is an exchange between Alito and Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr., arguing for the same-sex couples on behalf of the Obama administration.

Justice Alito: Well, in the Bob Jones case, the Court held that a college was not entitled to taxexempt status if it opposed interracial marriage or interracial dating.  So would the same apply to a 10 university or a college if it opposed same-sex marriage?

U.S. Officials Expect Bird Flu to Return in the Fall - from TRUNEWS

Negative interest rates put world on course for biggest mass default in history - from TRUNEWS

Here’s an astonishing statistic; more than 30pc of all government debt in the eurozone – around €2 trillion of securities in total – is trading on a negative interest rate.

With the advent of European Central Bank quantitative easing, what began four months ago when 10-year Swiss yields turned negative for the first time has snowballed into a veritable avalanche of negative rates across European government bond markets. In the hunt for apparently “safe assets”, investors have thrown caution to the wind, and collectively determined to pay governments for the privilege of lending to them.

On a country by country basis, the statistics are even more startling. According to investment bank Jefferies, some 70pc of all German bunds now trade on a negative yield. In France, it’s 50pc, and even in Spain, which was widely thought insolvent only a few years ago, it’s 17pc.

Not only has this never happened before on such a scale, but it marks a scarcely believable turnaround on the situation at the height of the eurozone crisis just a little while back, when some European bond markets traded on yields that reflected the very real possibility of default. Yet far from being a welcome sign of returning economic confidence, this almost surreal state of affairs actually signals the very reverse. How did we get here, and what does it mean for the future? Whichever way you come at it, the answer to this second question is not good, not good at all.

Obama, Abe push for completion of free-trade deal among Pacific rim nations - from TRUNEWS

President Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed Tuesday to join forces to push for completion of a major free-trade deal among Pacific rim nations, starting with Mr. Abe’s speech on Wednesday to a divided Congress.

The two leaders emerged from a meeting in the Oval Office expressing a commitment to work together on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, although U.S. and Japanese negotiators have yet to resolve questions about tariffs on auto and beef exports.

“I know that the politics around trade can be hard in both our countries, but I know that Prime Minister Abe, like me, is deeply committed to getting this done,” Mr. Obama said at a joint news conference in the White House Rose Garden. “And I’m confident we will.”

Mr. Abe, in Washington for a State Dinner Tuesday night, said he is “eager” to conclude the TPP because “prosperity brings peace.”

“We will continue to cooperate to lead the TPP talks to its last phase,” he said through a translator. Mr. Abe will be the first Japanese prime minister to address Congress when he speaks to a joint session on Wednesday.

A charity affiliated with the Clinton Foundation failed to reveal the identities of its 1,100 donors, creating a broad exception to the foundation’s promise to disclose funding sources as part of an ethics agreement with the Obama administration.

The number of undisclosed contributors to the charity, the Canada-based Clinton Giustra Enterprise Partnership, signals a larger zone of secrecy around foundation donors than was previously known.

Details of the organization’s fundraising were disclosed this week by a spokeswoman for the Canadian group’s founder, mining magnate Frank Giustra.

The Canadian group has received attention in recent days as a potential avenue for anonymous Clinton Foundation donations from foreign business executives, including some who had interests before the U.S. government while Hillary Rodham Clinton was secretary of state.

Media reports on warm ‘blob’ in Pacific Ocean pretend it can’t be related to huge plume of radioactive waste - from TRUNEWS

Media outlets are widely reporting on two recent studies in the journal Geophysical Research Letters describing a giant “blob” of warm water that may be responsible for recent ecological and weather anomalies across the United States — from California’s drought to the East Coast’s severe winter to the thousands of dying sea lions washing up along the West Coast.

The “blob” — more precisely, the “warm anomaly” — is a patch of ocean water just off the coast of the Pacific Northwest that is about 1,000 miles across, 300 feet deep, and 3 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than usual. It received its nickname from Nick Bond of Washington State University, lead author of one of the new studies.

Do the new studies actually explain what the media are claiming? Are there potential explanations that are being ignored?

‘Animal rights’ police to be set up in Norway - from TRUNEWS

Animals in Norway could soon feel much safer, as the country’s government has announced plans to set up a police force for animals. The animal cops will initially work on a three-year trial period, with the move being hailed by animal rights activists.

Sor-Trondelag in the west of Norway, is the county where the initiative is going to be tested. It will employ three staff – an investigator, a legal expert and a coordinator – to fight animal abuse. It will also work closely with the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, which is responsible for animal welfare.

First of all, it’s important to take care of our animals, so that they enjoy the rights they have and that there be a follow-up when their rights are violated,” Agriculture Minister Sylvi Listhaug said, describing animals at risk as “often defenseless,” AFP reported.

Her viewpoint was also supported by the Justice Minister Anders Anundsen, who urged for increasing numbers of similar projects to come to fruition.

Global Strike Command is USAF’s new weapon against China: expert - from TRUNEWS

A pure bomber command is likely to be established for the first time in US military history after the Air Force made the announcement last week to reassign all its heavy bombers to the Global Strike Command last week, James Hasik, a senior researcher from the Washington-based Atlantic Council wrote in a piece for National Interest magazine.

The USAF put the nuclear-capable B-52Hs and B-2As bombers of the 8th Air Force and the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles of the 20th Air Force under the Global Strike Command in 2009. However, the de-nuclearized B-1B bombers stayed with the Air Combat Command’s 12th Air Force. Such policy reconfigures the newly established Global Strike Command as a Bomber and Missile Command according to the author.

Hasik said that the consolidation of heavy bombers under the Global Strike Command will provide a single organizational home to all big bomber crews, including those of the forthcoming Long-Range Strike Bombers. “With that art of the possible emerging, the organizational heft of this new ‘Bomber Command’ may then spur some really new thinking, which the USAF genuinely needs for dealing with the mounting threat from China,” Hasik said.

China stockpiling bullion to boost yuan - from TRUNEWS

China’s push to challenge US dominance in global trade and finance may involve gold – a lot of gold.

While the metal is no longer used to back paper money, it remains a big chunk of central bank reserves in the US and Europe. China became the world’s second-largest economy in 2010, and has stepped up efforts to make the yuan a viable competitor to the dollar. That’s led to speculation that the government has stockpiled gold as part of a plan to diversify $3.7 trillion (R45 trillion) in foreign-exchange reserves.

Holograms Could Bring Videogame-Like Navigation to Your Car - from TRUNEWS

There are plenty of ways to get directions in the car, but most have one big shortcoming. Whether you’re using a standalone GPS, in-car navi system, smartphone, the Apple Watch, or even a paper map, you have to look away from the road (you know, that thing you’re supposed to be paying attention to when driving) in order to see where you’re supposed to be going.

So how to keep your eyes on the road and not get lost? One option is the heads-up display. Increasingly common on high-end cars, these devices project things like navigation directions and current speed onto the windshield, so the driver has important information right in their field of vision. It’s a technology that’s fast spreading beyond this incarnation, though: We’ve seen screens showing ghost cars for racers, and another that uses lasers to “paint” the edge of a road on the windshield in inclement weather. Then there are these wacky augmented reality concept goggles from Mini.

Iran Seizes Cargo Ship; Pentagon Sends Destroyer - from TRUNEWS

Iranian forces have reportedly fired at and seized a US cargo ship with 34 sailors on board, according to Saudi Arabian state TV.

The vessel has been directed to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas on the southern coast, Al-Arabiya has reported.

It remains unclear why or if the ship was captured, and whether the shots injured anyone on-board, as neither US nor Iranian officials have confirmed the allegations. The US Fifth Fleet off the coast of Bahrain had no immediate comment on the report, according to Reuters.

Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency suggested that the ship was trespassing in the Persian Gulf.

However, a US official told Reuters that there are no indications so far that any US ship is being directed by Iranian forces.

New bird flu cases hit 2.3M birds in Iowa - from TRUNEWS

Four more probable cases of bird flu have been identified in Iowa, a total of 2.28 million birds, in Osceola, O’Brien and Sioux counties in northwest Iowa, the Iowa Department of Agriculture said Monday.

It would bring the number of birds that have tested positive for avian influenza in Iowa over the past month to nearly 6.2 million birds.

And Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey said in a press conference that a fifth farm in Iowa is believed to be infected with avian influenza, 3.7 million hens at a second facility in Sioux County.

It would bring the total number of birds infected in Iowa to about 9.9 million, with most of the cases coming from commercial egg-laying facilities.

A week ago, a commercial egg-laying facility in Osceola County, with 3.8 million hens, tested positive for H5N2 avian influenza. It is the largest outbreak in the nation.

Bastrop County residents fire off questions on Jade Helm 15 - from TRUNEWS

More than 150 people packed into the Bastrop County Commissioner’s Court Monday to hear details about Jade Helm 15. Members of the Army Special Operations Command are scheduled to train across the country in a multi-state exercise and some of that training will happen in Central Texas. The size and scope of Jade Helm sets it apart according a release from the military.

The exercise is scheduled to start in July and end in September.

“Training is key for our soldiers,” said Lt. Colonel Mark Lastoria.

Commissioners voted in January to welcome the training. County Judge Paul Pape says he didn’t expect this amount of negative criticism about the military training. Pape believes there has been some misinformation circulating around social media.

Pape invited Lt. Colonel Lastoria in from Ft. Bragg to brief residents and answer any questions. They passionately fired them off for nearly two hours.

Obama ‘secretly loosened’ CIA drone strike rules in Pakistan - from TRUNEWS

President Obama secretly granted the Central Intelligence Agency more flexibility to conduct drone strikes targeting terror suspects in Pakistan than anywhere else in the world after approving more restrictive rules in 2013, according to a published report.

The Wall Street Journal, citing current and former U.S. officials, reported that Obama approved a waiver exempting the CIA from proving that militants targeted in Pakistan posed an imminent threat to the U.S. According to the paper, under that standard, the agency might have been prevented from carrying out a Jan. 15 strike that killed an American and an Italian who were held hostage by Al Qaeda-linked militants.

The deaths of Dr. Warren Weinstein and Giovanni Lo Porto have renewed debate in Washington over what, if any, new limits should be put on the drone program…

Angela Merkel’s government ‘aware of US attempts to spy on France and European companies’ - from TRUNEWS

Angela Merkel’s government knew of attempts by the US to spy on French authorities and European defense companies as long ago as 2008, according to new claims.

Prosecutors are investigating allegations that the BND intelligence agency acted against German interests by spying on European targets on behalf of the US National Security Agency (NSA).

But a new report in Bild newspaper claimed that the BND informed Mrs Merkel’s office about the operations as early as 2008.

Documents submitted to a German parliamentary inquiry clearly show that Mrs Merkel’s office was aware of the situation, the newspaper claimed. Bild did not elaborate on what they had meant by French authorities.

Mrs Merkel on Monday pledged to cooperate with investigations.

“Now it will involve clarifying the matter comprehensively,” she said, speaking in Warsaw after a meeting with the Polish prime minister.

Foreign funds promoting ‘extreme Islamic jihadist’ views in Canada, national security advisor says - from TRUNEWS

Money is coming into Canada to promote extremist ideology and much of it is going to religious institutions, the prime minister’s national security adviser testified at a hearing Monday on the government’s counter-terrorism bill.

Asked by Senate national security committee chairman Daniel Lang about millions of dollars allegedly coming from Gulf states “in respect to the extreme Islamic jihadist interpretation of the Qur’an,” Richard Fadden said it was a problem.

“I think it’s fair to say, without commenting on the particular country of origin, there are monies coming into this country which are advocating this kind of approach to life,” responded Fadden, who works in the Privy Council Office.

“A lot of these funds, I think, are directed to religious institutions or quasi-religious institutions. It’s very difficult in this country to start poking about, if you’ll forgive my English, religious institutions because of the respect that we have for freedom of religion.”

White House Refuses to Disclose Secret Cellphone Kill Switch Order - from TRUNEWS

The White House has refused to release information about a secret policy that permits the Department of Homeland Security to unilaterally shut down private cellphone service in the event of a national crisis.

Enacted almost ten years ago without public notice or debate, Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) 303, often referred to as the cellphone kill switch, has been shrouded in secrecy from its inception and has been targeted by civil liberties groups looking to make the policy public.

“We have no clue what’s in it or what it’s about,” Harold Feld, the senior vice president of Public Knowledge, a public interest advocacy group, told Al Jazeera America.

In 2012, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) filed suit in federal court seeking disclosure of information about SOP 303’s basic guidelines and policy procedures.

Puerto Rico hurtles toward default - from TRUNEWS

A severe liquidity crisis that threatens to shut down Puerto Rico’s government is making life difficult for U.S. municipal bond investors.

The island territory has been labeled “America’s Greece.” Its $73 billion in bonds trading in the U.S. municipal-bond market carry junk ratings and are trading at record-high yields.

In a letter last week, the island‘s Government Development Bank said the government would likely shut down in three months, unless lawmakers agree on a financing deal that would see the island double its sales tax in an effort to balance its budget and allow it to sell $2.9 billion in new bonds.

Last Friday, Standard & Poor’s downgraded the Puerto Rico’s credit rating to CCC-plus, pushing it even further into junk territory, while a Bank of America report dated April 17 warned of the danger of “widespread restructuring for the commonwealth.”

This isn’t a new phenomenon. Puerto Rico has been stacking up debt to close its budget gaps and fund its operations for years, while growth has remained anemic. Its population is declining and its tax base is shrinking, said Antonio Fernós Sagebien, principal at REOF Capital, a Puerto Rico-based distressed-debt advisory firm.

U.S. Adviser Warns That Russia Is Sapping World Order - from TRUNEWS

U.S. diplomat Charles Hill was a senior adviser to former U.S. secretaries of state George Shultz and Henry Kissinger, and to Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the sixth Secretary-General of the United Nations. He has also penned two books: “Grand Strategies: Literature, Statecraft and World Order” and “Trial of a Thousand Years: World Order and Islamism.”

The Moscow Times talked to Hill about the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis on today’s world system and the role other global and regional powers play in preserving — or undermining — the global order.

Q: What is your understanding of the origins of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the West in general?

A: You have to see this in a global context. I don’t think it’s really beneficial to analyze each local conflict around the world separately. This is something that has to be considered in terms of the international state system. That is the system by which the world’s countries, the major powers, agreed — and generally obeyed — to work with each other over several hundred years.

What Russia has done in taking Crimea and destabilizing the eastern part of Ukraine — whoever can be blamed for the origin of it — is detrimental, and damaging to the international order.

What China is doing in the contested waters of Asia, the Middle Eastern turmoil and the actions of the Islamic State are also damaging to that international order.

So each individual local regional crisis is different, but at the same time they all have some interlocked connection, and are harming world stability and the possibility of world cooperation.

Call for ‘new world order’ so emerging markets can shine - from TRUNEWS

The overarching theme at the 2015 Asian-African Conference in Indonesia this week was the need for “a new economic world order”.

The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were roundly criticised for failing to deliver solutions for the global economy to alleviate poverty, distribute wealth and close the inequality gap.

At the opening of the conference in Jakarta, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said the World Bank and the IMF are reluctant to recognise that the world has changed. He said Asian and African countries need to build a new global economic order that is open to emerging economic powers.

“The view that the world’s economic problems can only be solved by the World Bank and the IMF is an outdated view. I am of the view that the management of the global economy cannot be left only to these international financial institutions,” said Widodo.

‘Global injustice is real’

He said rich nations that only house 20% of the world’s population consume more than 70% of its resources.

“When hundreds enjoy the lives of the super-rich, while more than 1.2?billion people in the southern hemisphere struggle with less than $2 a day, then global injustice becomes real.”

Robots Used In Long-Distance Surgery Can Easily Be Hacked - from TRUNEWS

In 2001, a doctor in New York completed what may seem like a routine surgery to remove a patient’s gallbladder. But in fact that procedure wasn’t routine at all, because the patient was in France. That was the first successful long-distance robotic surgery, or telesurgery, ever performed, and since then the field has taken off. Though robotic surgery is not yet the industry standard, sales of medical robots are increasing by 20 percent each year, and by 2025 the Department of Defense wants to have deployable Trauma Pods that could allow surgeons to operate on soldiers from hundreds or thousands of miles away.

Though proponents of telesurgery have thoroughly discussed its benefits (there’s no delay due to travel time, for example, and surgery could be possible in remote locations like deep underwater or in outer space) there hasn’t been much exploration of its weaknesses. Researchers from the University of Washington decided to put the telesurgery technology to the test to see if they are susceptible to cyber attacks. According their study, the security of surgical robots leaves much to be desired.

Pope’s unprecedented encyclical on climate change due this summer, but it’s already proving controversial - from TRUNEWS

The largely secular climate movement is about to get what some predict will be a historic boost from an intriguing source: Pope Francis.

Francis is putting the final touches on what may be the most authoritative papal teaching ever on the environment, a topic bound up with economics, global development and politics and thus very controversial. Even though no one outside Francis’s inner circle has seen the document — called an encyclical — it’s already being lambasted by some religious and political conservatives and held up by environmentalists as a potential turning point in their movement.

The encyclical is expected to be published in early summer and, church historians say, represents the first time in memory that such an important papal writing is being timed by a pope to influence a civil process — in this case, a major U.N. summit in December on climate change.

Based on remarks and writings by the pope and his close advisers, most pope-watchers think Francis will raise urgent concerns about global warming and highlight human impact on climate change. More broadly, they expect Francis to frame with new emphasis the Earth’s health as a core Catholic social justice concern, up there with topics such as poverty and abortion.

Top U.S. court appears on cusp of declaring right to gay marriage - from TRUNEWS

The U.S. Supreme Court’s arguments on Tuesday over same-sex marriage will cap more than two decades of litigation and a transformation in public attitudes.

Based on the court’s actions during the past two years, a sense of inevitability is in the air: That a majority is on the verge of declaring gay marriage legal nationwide.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, the court’s pivotal member on gay rights, has been marching in this direction with opinions dating to 1996. In his most recent gay rights decision for the court in 2013, rejecting a legal definition of marriage limited to a man and woman for purposes of federal benefits, Kennedy deplored that U.S. law for making gay marriages “unequal.”

That 5-4 decision did not address a constitutional right to same-sex marriage, but lower court judges interpreted the ruling as an endorsement of it and began invalidating state bans.

When states appealed rulings striking down their same-sex marriage prohibitions, the Supreme Court declined to intervene, most notably in October 2014 when it denied appeals in seven cases on a single day…

War games off UK coast not response to Russia, says NATO - from TRUNEWS

Huge military exercises are underway off and around Britain’s coast, but NATO insists they are not a deliberate response to the Russian military’s increasingly brazen behavior.

The British-led war games are code named Joint Warrior and the numbers are all big: 13,000 personnel from 14 countries operating more than 50 ships and submarines as well as 70 aircraft.

NATO says the planning started long before Russia began behaving as an adversary.

For more than a year NATO has been condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine as well as its frequent, large scale, snap military drills and those long-range Bear bombers repeatedly flying very close to NATO airspace.

General: China Space Threat Drives U.S. Space Warfare Buildup - from TRUNEWS

China’s growing space warfare capabilities are prompting the Air Force to develop military space weapons to protect U.S. satellites and shoot down enemy systems, the commander of the Air Force Space Command said in an interview that aired on Sunday.

“It’s a competition I wish wasn’t occurring, but it is,” Air Force Gen. John Hyten, the space commander, told CBS News.

“And if we’re threatened in space, we have the right of self defense and we’ll make sure we can execute that right.”

Asked if those defenses will involve military force, Hyten states: “That’s why we have a military … I’m not NASA.”

Hyten said some U.S. military satellites can maneuver to avoid attack but older ones cannot. “It depends on the satellite … when it was built … how old it is … when we know the threat is coming.”

The program reports that the United States has tested anti-satellite weapons in the past and spends an estimated 10 times more on space than the Chinese. The military space budget is around $25 billion annually, including spy satellites and secret programs, CBS reported.

NSA veteran chief fears crippling cyber-attack on Western energy infrastructure - from TRUNEWS

The West is losing the worldwide fight against jihadist terrorism and faces mounting risks of a systemic cyber-assault by extremely capable enemies, the former chief of the National Security Agency has warned.

“The greatest risk is a catastrophic attack on the energy infrastructure. We are not prepared for that,” said General Keith Alexander, who has led the US battle against cyber-threats for much of the last decade.

Gen Alexander said the “doomsday” scenario for the West is a hi-tech blitz on refineries, power stations, and the electric grid, perhaps accompanied by a paralysing blow to the payments nexus of the major banks.

“We need something like an integrated air-defence system for the whole energy sector,” he said, speaking at a private dinner held by IHS CERAWeek in Texas.

More insidiously, there is now a systematic effort by state-backed hacking teams to steal technology from Western companies. “This is the biggest wealth transfer in history,” he said.

Mysterious ‘god’ cloud and lightning appear over Chilean volcano - from TRUNEWS

A mysterious “god like” person has appeared in a cloud following the Calbuco volcano eruption in Chile.

The photo, which shows a cloud that resembles a human-like figure, is believed to be a sign from the gods by locals after the volcano blew for the first time in 40 years.

On Wednesday local time, a state of emergency was declared in the town after the volcano violently erupted, sending ash soaring into the stratosphere. The eruption itself wasn’t anticipated by either the government or scientists.

Did you hear the one about the Muslim, socialist, Kenyan president? The joke Obama can’t stop telling - from TRUNEWS

If there’s one thing we can count on from President Obama at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner every year, it’s him making jokes about being Muslim, foreign-born and socialist.

On Saturday, he joked about how busy he is, dealing with immigration, vetoes and Iran — all while finding time to pray five times a day. And then there was the one about how if Bernie Sanders became president, we’d have a “third Obama term after all” (“Apparently, some folks really want to see a pot-smoking socialist in the White House,” he said).

He got lots of laughs, but if you look back at all of his other routines, you’ll notice he has made similar jokes before. Not just once. Not just twice. Every. Single. Year. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it, right? Here’s a look back at Obama joking about being a socialist Muslim born in Kenya:

German Army Has No Chance Against Russian Tanks – German Newspaper - from TRUNEWS

Germany lacks effective ammunition and will not be able to withstand Russian tanks in case of military conflict, the German newspaper “Die Welt” wrote.

Despite the fact that Germany possesses the Leopard 2, one of the best battle tanks in the world, its armed forces lack powerful ammunition and have no chances against Russian tanks, according to the newspaper.

The German wolfram-based ammunition does not produce enough kinetic energy to breach the modernized and technologically advanced Russian T90 and T80 tanks.

Spying Close to Home: German Intelligence Under Fire for NSA Cooperation - from TRUNEWS

It was obvious from its construction speed just how important the new site in Bavaria was to the Americans. Only four-and-a-half months after it was begun, the new, surveillance-proof building at the Mangfall Kaserne in Bad Aibling was finished. The structure had a metal exterior and no windows, which led to its derogatory nickname among members of the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), the German foreign intelligence agency: The “tin can.”

The construction project was an expression of an especially close andtrusting cooperation between the American National Security Agency (NSA) and the BND. Bad Aibling had formerly been a base for US espionage before it was officially turned over to the BND in 2004. But the “tin can” was built after the handover took place.

The heads of the two intelligence agencies had agreed to continue cooperating there in secret. Together, they established joint working groups, one for the acquisition of data, called Joint Sigint Activity, and one for the analysis of that data, known as the Joint Analysis Center.

DOJ ‘Monitoring’ Arkansas Gun Range Owner Who Banned Muslims - from TRUNEWS

The Department of Justice is “monitoring” Gun Cave Indoor Firing Range owner Jan Morgan in Hot Springs, Arkansas, for banning Muslims from shooting in the facility.

At that time, Fox News reported that Morgan decided to ban Muslims after “two customers she deemed suspicious” showed up in September. Since that time, she has excluded those “she believes to be Muslim based upon their names.” She said, “We are dealing in lethal firearms. I am not going to let a Nazi shoot in here, or a Ku Klux Klan member in here, either.”

Breitbart News reported that the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) wrote a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder asking him to intervene. In the letter, CAIR said, “Given the recent spike in anti-Muslim rhetoric, including Islamophobic statements by government officials, community leaders and media outlets, death threats, and other bias incidents targeting Muslims, I urge you to investigate this matter soon.”

George W. Bush Bashes Obama on Middle East - from TRUNEWS

In a closed-door meeting with Jewish Donors Saturday night, former President George W. Bush delivered his harshest public criticisms to date against his successor on foreign policy, saying that President Barack Obama is being naïve about Iran and the pending nuclear deal and losing the war against the Islamic State.

One attendee at the Republican Jewish Coalition session, held at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas with owner Sheldon Adelson in attendance, transcribed large portions of Bush’s remarks. The former president, who rarely ever criticizes Obama in public, at first remarked that the idea of re-entering the political arena was something he didn’t want to do. He then proceeded to explain why Obama, in his view, was placing the U.S. in “retreat” around the world. He also said Obama was misreading Iran’s intentions while relaxing sanctions on Tehran too easily.

According to the attendee’s transcription, Bush noted that Iran has a new president, Hassan Rouhani. “He’s smooth,” Bush said. “And you’ve got to ask yourself, is there a new policy or did they just change the spokesman?”

Gingrich accuses Hillary of illegal activity, as Clinton Foundation admits ‘mistakes’ - from TRUNEWS

The Clinton Foundation likely will refile some tax documents after making “mistakes” by combining government grants with other donations even as former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton moves to deflect an escalating money-for-influence scandal.

Maura Pally, acting CEO of the Clinton Foundation, said in a statement Sunday that the global charity will “likely refile forms for some years” after a voluntary external review, while stressing the total revenue was accurately reported.

“So yes, we made mistakes, as many organizations of our size do, but we are acting quickly to remedy them, and have taken steps to ensure they don’t happen in the future,” Ms. Pally said. “We are committed to operating the Foundation responsibly and effectively to continue the life-changing work that this philanthropy is doing every day.”

The disclosure came with Mrs. Clinton under fire for the foundation raising funds from foreign governments while she was serving as the Obama administration’s top diplomat. In the latest missive, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich accused Mrs. Clinton of breaking the law by accepting foundation donations from foreign governments during her tenure at the State Department.
