Watchman News Petrobras deadline prompts some bondholders to push for default

Petrobras, Brazil’s state-run oil company, could be declared in technical default on some of its foreign debt as early as Tuesday if bondholders pursue efforts to force it to speed up its assessment of losses in a giant corruption scandal.

The push, led by New York-based Aurelius Capital, applies to $54 billion of Petrobras bonds governed by U.S. law in New York state. Aurelius, a “distressed debt” fund, is asking investors to put the company into default as “a precautionary step,” according to a Dec. 29 letter from the firm reviewed by Reuters.

Under the terms of those bonds, Petrobras is required to provide third-quarter financial statements within 90 days of the end of a quarter, in this case by Monday, Dec. 29. Petrobras has not published those accounts because allegations of contract-fixing and bribery at the company have raised doubts about the true value of its assets.

USA Russia: Obama suggests Putin ‘not so smart’ - from TRUNEWS

President Barack Obama has said Vladimir Putin made a “strategic mistake” when he annexed Crimea, in a move that was “not so smart”.

Those thinking his Russian counterpart was a “genius” had been proven wrong by Russia’s economic crisis, he said.

International sanctions had made Russia’s economy particularly vulnerable to changes in oil price, Mr Obama said.

He also refused to rule out opening a US embassy in Iran soon.

“I never say never but I think these things have to go in steps” he told NPR’s Steve Inskeep in the Oval Office.

Mr Obama was giving a wide-ranging interview with NPR shortly before leaving for Hawaii for his annual holiday.

Politician’s fingerprint ‘cloned from photos’ by hacker - from TRUNEWS

A member of the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) hacker network claims to have cloned a thumbprint of a German politician by using commercial software and images taken at a news conference.

Jan Krissler says he replicated the fingerprint of defence minister Ursula von der Leyen using pictures taken with a “standard photo camera”.

Mr Krissler had no physical print from Ms von der Leyen.

Fingerprint biometrics are already considered insecure, experts say.

Mr Krissler, also known as Starbug, was speaking at a convention for members of the CCC, a 31-year-old network that claims to be “Europe’s largest association” of hackers.

He told the audience he had obtained a close-up of a photo of Ms von der Leyen’s thumb…

Greece comes back to haunt eurozone as anti-Troika rebels scent power - from TRUNEWS

The eurozone’s long-simmering crisis has returned with a vengeance as snap elections in Greece open the way for an anti-austerity government and a cathartic showdown over the terms of euro membership.

Yields on 3-year Greek debt surged 185 basis points to 11.9pc on Monday amid default fears after premier Antonis Samaras failed to win the extra votes in parliament needed to avert a general election on January 25, despite dire warnings that such an outcome risked “bankruptcy and exit from the euro.”

The upset opens the door for the hard-Left Syriza movement, which has vowed to tear up Greece’s hated ‘Memorandum’ with EU-IMF Troika creditors “on its first day in office”, and threatened to default on up to €245bn of rescue loans unless the EU grants debt relief.

Syriza is leading by 29.9pc to 23.4pc in the latest Palmos Analysis poll, though other surveys are closer. It is likely to become the first truly radical group to take power in any EMU state since the creation of monetary union. A quirk in Greece’s electoral law gives the winning party an extra fifty seats in parliament.

Alexis Tsipras, the bloc’s firebrand leader, vowed to overthrow of the austerity regime and launch new era of social salvation, claiming the government’s campaign of “blackmail and terror” had failed. “There will be an end to austerity. The future has started,” he said.

Islamic State claims killing of Iranian military adviser Brigadier General Hamid Taghavi in Iraq - from TRUNEWS

The Islamic State (IS) group has claimed the killing of a senior Iranian officer advising Iraqi forces in their fight against the jihadists, in posts on jihadist internet forums.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on Sunday announced the death of Brigadier General Hamid Taghavi, who had been training the army and Iraqi volunteers in the city of Samarra, north of Baghdad.

One jihadist forum posted an image of the officer standing next to three others, with a red circle around his head and the caption: “A photo of the miscreant Hamid Taghavi who was killed by the men of IS in the region of Samarra.”

Another image on the forum purportedly showed the body of the Iranian officer.

Goldman Sachs, clients, face $800 million loss over Banco Espírito loan - from TRUNEWS

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and several of its clients stand to lose hundred of millions of dollars from a loan made to Banco Espírito Santo SA just weeks before the Portuguese lender collapsed in August, after the Bank of Portugal said the claim won’t be honored by Novo Banco, the “good bank” carved out of BES.

Novo Banco said it was told by the Bank of Portugal last week that it wouldn’t have to repay $835 million owed to financing vehicle Oak Finance Luxembourg SA, in a reversal of an earlier decision by the central bank. The loan will instead remain an obligation of the “bad bank” that kept the Banco Espírito Santo name and its worst assets.

California College Students Call For K-12 Consent Education - from TRUNEWS

California college students are demanding schools teach prospective students about sexual consent long before they arrive on campus to help prevent college rape.

Student activists from San Diego State University and from the University of California’s Berkeley and Santa Barbara campuses listed three demands to “Take Back The Campus” on Dec. 9. One pertains to prospective students:

“We recommend consent education in K12. College is too late for people to learn about bodily autonomy and respect.”

California is the only state with a “yes means yes” law for colleges, requiring partners to affirmatively agree to sex. The law has been controversial, showing that consent can be a tricky subject.

Students “get to universities and we expect them to behave like they’re supposed to without any prior understanding of what consent looks like,” Meghan Warner, director of the Associated Students of the University of California Sexual Assault Commission and a UC Berkeley student who endorsed the demands, told The Huffington Post.

Watchman News What happened to AirAsia’s missing QZ8501? Here are the latest theories

We have an insatiable need to find answers, and the disappearance of flight QZ8501 en route to Singapore with 162 souls on board has no doubt sparked countless quests across numerous fields.

Aviation experts are examining the data, conspiracy theorists are working up offbeat explanations, and grieving friends and family are seeking closure.

While Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the AirAsia crisis on Sunday was “not a mystery like the MH370 disappearance and not an atrocity like the MH17 shooting down”, the key question remains: What happened?

Most aviation experts agree that bad weather played some role in the disappearance of the AirAsia A320 aircraft.

Shortly before losing contact, the pilot requested permission to ascend to 38,000 feet to avoid thick cloud, Indonesian Transport Ministry official Djoko Murjatmodjo said. “The weather was not good.”

Watchman News Mysterious Chinese blogger sparks online frenzy after ‘predicting’ that ‘black hand’ was going to bring down AirAsia jet thirteen days before one vanished

A mysterious Chinese blogger has provoked a storm of speculation online over claims he predicted the disappearance of an AirAsia flight thirteen days before one vanished.

In a series of posts which have gone viral, the man appears to warn that the airline would be targeted by a shadowy group he calls the ‘Black Hand’ which he claims brought down Malaysian Airlines flights MH17 and MH370 earlier this year.

An AirAsia flight went missing yesterday with 162 people on board after losing contact en route from Surabaya in Indonesia to Singapore in the third crisis for a Malaysian carrier this year.

Since its disappearance, social media users have reacted with astonishment at the apparent prediction, while others claim the posts were probably just edited afterwards to make it look authentic.

In one comment on December 15, which has been loosely translated by a Reddit member, the blogger apparently warns: ‘Black hand has hijacked and shot down MH370 and MH17.

‘This has pretty much killed the sixth largest airline: Malaysian airline.

‘Now the black hand are targeting AirAsia to ruin this airline cause (sic) it too belong to Malaysia.

‘Given how powerful the black hand are I suggest that all Chinese thinking about travelling to avoid AirAisa, so that you don’t disappear like those on MH370.’

Watchman News The Future Of Biometric Marketing

The current smartwatch and fitness device space is stagnant. The offerings and the devices are a commoditized mess with companies competing for the same consumers – with the same features. There must be more available from these devices than just tracking steps, miles walked, sleep and general activity, right?

Most of these devices, like Jawbone’s Up and Fitbit, have a closed sensor system; however, opening these sensors to third-party developers holds enormous potential. We’re just now beginning to see the glimmer of the benefits as some of the major electronics manufacturers like Microsoft and Samsung enter the space.

The new sensors on smartwatches and fitness bands will enable insight into a user’s heart rate, VO2 max, sympathetic nervous response, blood glucose level, EKG, temperature and more. We’re moving into a world where people will be wearing always-on body-monitoring systems. We’re standing at a frontier where we’re pulling laboratory science outside of the laboratory and creating a deluge of new data about human biometrics never before available.

This data fosters new insights and the development of new ecosystems allowing understanding of customers at a much more granular level and the ability to offer them new services. It started with time – arguably the sensor most taken for granted. With a timestamp we know “when” our users are writing us, using us and interacting.

Watchman News 2015 Predictions: Zombie Apocalypse Virus Becomes Possible Via An Artificial Virus Bioweapon

Out of the many predictions for 2015, a zombie apocalypse virus probably seems like a bad joke considering the recent Ebola epidemic. Unfortunately, a bioweapon made using an artificial virus has recently become feasible, making the possibility of a zombie virus seem real.

In a related report by the Inquisitr, if the Ebola virus did become airborne, this feat would require genetic engineering, since evolutionary theory seems to indicate the scenario would not happen naturally.

When it comes to a real zombie apocalypse, “naturally” is the key word. Most fiction, including The Walking Dead, always seem to endow zombies with an amazing metabolic ability to survive for years at a time even as their bodies fall to pieces. A real zombie virus would likely only allow the infected to survive for days or a few weeks at the most, and unlike in the movies, a quarantine would be effective instead of forestalling the inevitable wave of the shambling undead. So that’s the good news.

The bad news is that even the Ebola virus in its current form could be used as bioweapon. While it’s not something anyone wants to consider, one of the potential 2015 predictions is that terrorists like the Islamic State may attempt to create an Ebola epidemic in the United States by drinking the virus and then purposefully spreading it far and wide. In addition, Vladimir Nikiforov, head if the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Russian Federal Medical-Biological Agency’ Institution of Advanced Training, believes the current Ebola virus could be weaponized.

Goldman Sachs, clients, face $800 million loss over Banco Espírito loan

California College Students Call For K-12 Consent Education

Beck: Western embassies should take in persecuted homosexuals

The sentences for eight men charged with attending a homosexual wedding in Egypt have been reduced. Volker Beck of the German Green Party told DW that the West should do more to help persecuted homosexuals.

DW: An Egyptian appeals court reduced the sentences for eight men, who are in prison for allegedly attending a gay wedding. The court did not rescind the sentence and the men must stay in prison for another year. They had been sentenced to three years forpublishing obscene pictures.” What do you make of the court decision?

Gay marriage dynamic in U.S. shifted dramatically in 2014

For the first time, a majority of Americans are living in a state that allows gay marriage. After a year of cascading court opinions tossing out many remaining restrictions, the dynamic in 2014 changed from how many states allow same-sex marriage to how many states don’t.
