Bird flu death toll climbs to 42 million hens and turkeys in United States - from TRUNEWS

A staggering 42 million poultry have been destroyed in the worst outbreak of bird flu in America’s history.

That is nearly three times larger than the last worst outbreak in 1983.

It is taking an emotional toll on farmers and staff and a team of forensics are conducting a CSI-style investigation on how it is continuing to spread unchecked.

It is the highly pathogenic avian influenza strain of H5 N2 (HPAI H5N2), which poses only a low risk to human health.

Why have 121,000 antelopes in Kazakhstan suddenly dropped dead? - from TRUNEWS

International experts are investigating the sudden deaths of more than 100,000 endangered saiga antelope in Kazakhstan, officials said Wednesday, raising fears that a species that has been around since the Ice Age may be at risk of dying out.

Around 40 percent of the Central Asian nation’s population of the endangered saiga antelope have died in the past two weeks. Animal health experts suspect a respiratory disease may be to blame.

Kazakhstan, the world’s ninth-largest country by area, is home to around 90 percent of the world’s population of the saiga, recognizable by their lyre-shaped horns and bulbous nose.

Anthrax bungle sees more labs receive US shipments than first thought - from TRUNEWS

More laboratories received live anthrax from a US military facility than first thought, including in Australia. A review of how the bacteria is handled has been announced.

The Pentagon has acknowledged that laboratories in Australia and South Korea as well as 11 US states, two more than it first acknowledged, received “suspect samples” of live anthrax. It had previously only identified a foreign shipment to a US air base south of Seoul.

The anthrax shipments appear to have come from Dugway Proving Grounds, a Defense Department laboratory in Utah, where the samples were irradiated and supposedly rendered “dead.”

On Friday, a private firm in Maryland notified authorities that its sample was still active. As a result there was a review of all material sent out to other labs.

California’s largest lake is slipping away amid an epic drought - from TRUNEWS

The bone-dry lake bed burned crystalline and white in the midday sun. Ecologist Bruce Wilcox hopped out of his truck and bent down to scoop up a handful of the gleaming, crusty soil.

Wilcox squeezed, then opened his fist. The desert wind scattered the lake bed like talcum powder.

“That’s disturbing,” Wilcox said, imagining what would happen if thousands of acres of this dust took flight. It’s the kind of thing that keeps him up at night.

Japan on alert after powerful earthquake in Pacific - from TRUNEWS

Seismologists have warned Japan to stay vigilant for the next “Big One” after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the country, injuring a dozen people.

Buildings swayed for about a minute in Tokyo on Saturday night as the quake struck at a remote spot in the Pacific Ocean 542 miles (874km) south of the capital, the US Geological Survey said.

Despite its power, there was no risk of a tsunami as the epicentre was 676km below the Earth’s surface, the USGS and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

If Catholic Ireland said yes to same-sex marriage, could Israel ever do the same? - from TRUNEWS

While gay couples would like to see gay marriage legalized in Israel, some say issue of civil partnership for all citizens is more important.

In a few weeks Eli and Ron will celebrate their relationship with a wedding to be held at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. There will be food, friends, music and a ceremony. But as far as the state of Israel is concerned, no marriage will have taken place, because the state does not recognize gay marriage. Beijing’s Belt and Road means overseas military bases - from TRUNEWS

China’s ninth defense white paper published on May 26 openly declared that overseas military bases will be necessary to carry out the New Economic Silk Road Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (“Belt and Road”) initiatives, according to Chinese political analyst Mao Yulin in an article for Duowei News, a media outlet operated by overseas Chinese.

Mao said the publication of the white paper lays down the definition of China’s strategy of active defense for the first time. The paper stated that pure defensive thinking can no longer protect or defend China’s territorial integrity. Facing potential conflicts over the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean, China needs a blue-water navy to operate in the open seas, it said. Sticking to a brown-water navy established to protect the nation’s coastline is simply outdated, according to Mao.

The release of China’s ninth defense white paper on May 26 indicates that the People’s Liberation Army has changed its traditional strategy of coastal defense. By acquiring more advanced weapons systems, the development of PLA Navy in the future will be focused on its offensive capability. Under this strategy, the mission of China’s strategic missile division known as the Second Artillery Corps has become more important, Sivkov said.

The scale of Iraqi losses to Islamic State is starting to emerge with country’s prime minister telling reporters that his security forces lost thousands of Humvee armoured vehicles when the jihadist group overran the northern city of Mosul.

“In the collapse of Mosul, we lost a lot of weapons,” Mr Abadi said in an interview with Iraqiya state TV on Sunday. “We lost 2300 Humvees in Mosul alone.”

While the exact price of the vehicles varies depending on how they are armoured and equipped, it is clearly a hugely expensive loss that has boosted Islamic State capabilities.

Moshe Dayan in 1970: What if We Razed the Temple Mount Mosque? - from TRUNEWS

The previously secret minutes of a meeting in 1970 between then-Defense Minister Moshe Dayan and leaders of the nascent settlement enterprise in Judea and Samaria have been published for the first time – and they include some very surprising statements on both sides, with the secular Dayan raising the idea of allowing Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount, and his religious guests making clear that they do not espouse it.

At one point, Dayan even floated the idea of bulldozing the Mosque of Omar, which is located next to the Al Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount, apparently just to test the settlement leaders’ reaction and to make a point regarding prayer at the Cave of Machpela.

The meeting – described as a meeting between Dayan and “a delegation of settlers from Hevron” – took place on Wednesday, September 30, 1970, and its contents were published Friday by Arnon Segal, a Temple Mount activist, in Makor Rishon.

Can the renminbi beat the dollar for currency supremacy? - from TRUNEWS

China is pushing for inclusion of its currency in the International Monetary Fund’s Special Drawing Rights basket, which is due for its five-year review this year.

China’s planned launch of an international payment system to process cross-border yuan transactions in September will challenge the US dollar’s dominance in global trade and help Beijing build a leading role in Asian and global financial markets.

The greenback’s dominance in global trade and financial markets has begun to weaken because of the currency’s co-dependence with US military power, which is seeing structural changes.

ECB warns of contagion risk as Greece delays continue - from TRUNEWS

A failure to reach an agreement on Greece’s aid program soon may drive yields on bonds issued by other euro-area countries higher, the European Central Bank said.

“In the absence of a quick agreement on structural implementation needs, the risk of an upward adjustment of the risk premia demanded on vulnerable euro-area sovereigns could materialise,” the ECB said in its twice-yearly Financial Stability Review published Thursday in Frankfurt. “The lengthy and uncertain process of negotiations between the newly formed Greek government and its creditors” has already contributed to bouts of extreme volatility in Greek markets, it said.

Three months after taking office, the new Greek government has still failed to reach agreement with its creditors to unlock bailout funds, bringing it ever closer to default. While ECB policy makers have claimed the region is better insulated against a disorderly Greek outcome than previously, a failure to meet payments could still create spillover effects for bond markets in neighboring countries as well as domestic banks.

Japan’s Shinzo Abe hopes ‘robot revolution’ can replace ageing workforce - from TRUNEWS

A new greeter at the entrance of the Mitsukoshi department store in central Tokyo has caused a stir. The worker, dressed in a kimono and cheerfully welcoming shoppers in honorific Japanese, is a robot made by Toshiba and shows how lifelike these machines can be.

This latest example of Japan’s skill comes just as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is calling for a “robot revolution”. Advances in robotic computing power, the ability to recognise voices and images, and machine learning could help the country overcome the handicap of a fast-ageing populace and a declining workforce.

At the opening of Japan’s Robot Revolution Initiative Council on May 15, Abe urged companies to “spread the use of robotics from large-scale factories to every corner of our economy and society”. Backed by 200 companies and universities, the five-year, government-led push aims to deepen the use of intelligent machines in manufacturing, supply chains, construction, and health care, while expanding robotics sales from 600 billion yen ($6.4 billion) annually to 2.4 trillion yen by 2020.

Russia masses heavy firepower on border with Ukraine – witness - from TRUNEWS

Russia’s army is massing troops and hundreds of pieces of weaponry including mobile rocket launchers, tanks and artillery at a makeshift base near the border with Ukraine, a Reuters reporter saw this week.

Many of the vehicles have number plates and identifying marks removed while many of the servicemen had taken insignia off their fatigues. As such, they match the appearance of some of the forces spotted in eastern Ukraine, which Kiev and its Western allies allege are covert Russian detachments.

The scene at the base on the Kuzminsky firing range, around 50 km (30 miles) from the border, offers some of the clearest evidence to date of what appeared to be a concerted Russian military build-up in the area.

‘They created these people': Rand Paul blames GOP hawks for rise of ISIS - from TRUNEWS

Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul is blaming his own party for the rise of the Islamic State group.

The freshman senator from Kentucky, who supports a smaller U.S. footprint in the world, charged Wednesday that the GOP’s foreign policy hawks “created these people.” In return, potential GOP rival Bobby Jindal, the Louisiana governor, said Paul is unqualified to be president.

The Islamic State group, commonly referred to as ISIS, has seized a strategically important swath of the Middle East and in recent days made gains in central Iraq.

“ISIS exists and grew stronger because of the hawks in our party who gave arms indiscriminately,” Paul said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” He continued: “They created these people. ISIS is all over Libya because these same hawks in my party loved — they loved Hillary Clinton’s war in Libya. They just wanted more of it.”

Confidential Meeting Seeks to Sway Synod to Accept Same-Sex Unions - from TRUNEWS

A one-day study meeting — open only to a select group of individuals — took place at the Pontifical Gregorian University on Monday with the aim of urging “pastoral innovations” at the upcoming Synod of Bishops on the Family in October.

Around 50 participants, including bishops, theologians and media representatives, took part in the gathering, at the invitation of the presidents of the bishops’ conferences of Germany, Switzerland and France — Cardinal Reinhard Marx, Bishop Markus Büchel and Archbishop Georges Pontier.

One of the key topics discussed at the closed-door meeting was how the Church could better welcome those in stable same-sex unions, and reportedly “no one” opposed such unions being recognized as valid by the Church.

Bird flu pandemic alert: Virus could soon be passed from human to human, warns Cambridge professor - from TRUNEWS

The deadly bird flu virus is only two or three mutations away from being infectious between humans, an expert warned yesterday.

Such a virus would have a ‘devastating’ impact on the world’s population, similar to the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic which killed around 50million people.

In its current form, avian flu can only be transmitted between birds and from birds to humans.

But Professor Derek Smith, of Cambridge University, said studies showed it only needed five amino acid mutations – which happen naturally when the virus evolves – to become transmittable between people. Scientists have discovered two of these mutations are already common and a third has been seen in some parts of the world – meaning it would take just two more.

Sterling, who represented herself at trial, was convicted February 1, 2014 in a court-martial at Camp Lejune, North Carolina after she refused to obey orders from a staff sergeant to remove the Bible verses from her desk.

Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday, a spokesman for China’s Defence Ministry, Yang Yujun, denied the timing of the paper’s release had any connection with the ongoing spat with the United States, which flew a surveillance plane last Wednesday over the reef and rock formations where China is carrying out extensive land reclamation and building in the disputed waters.

But the white paper bluntly warns against countries who it considered were “busy meddling” in the South China Sea.

An extremely dangerous conflict is brewing between the US and China in a tiny archipelago in the South China Sea - from TRUNEWS

Where lies the greatest potential for disaster in this ever more disordered world? In Russia’s efforts to rebuild its former empire? In the chaos of the Middle East, or the chronic instability of a nuclear-armed Pakistan? Conceivably, none of the above. A case can be made that the biggest danger is represented by a semi-submerged archipelago in the South China Sea called the Spratly Islands, object of a confrontation between China and the US and America’s regional allies that without wisdom and restraint could escalate beyond control.

The stakes, even by a purely material reckoning, are exceptionally high. The tiny islands sit astride a shipping route carrying $5trn of trade a year. The waters that surround them contain rich fishing grounds and, almost certainly, major reserves of oil and other resources. The dispute over the Spratlys, where China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei have overlapping claims of maritime sovereignty, goes back decades. But only recently, with the increasingly assertive and nationalistic policies of Beijing, has it gone critical.

Thieves stole data on 100,000 taxpayers through IRS app - from TRUNEWS

Criminals stole sensitive information about roughly 100,000 taxpayers through the Internal Revenue Service’s “Get Transcript” application, a major data breach at the U.S.’s national tax agency.

The thieves first stole information including Social Security details, dates of birth and street addresses from an outside, non-IRS source, the government agency said Tuesday. They then used that information to clear a multistep authentication process and access the IRS site, along with all the personal tax details stored there.

The matter is now under review by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration and the IRS’ Criminal Investigation unit. The Get Transcript application has also been temporarily shut down.

Though roughly 100,000 taxpayers’ information was accessed, the IRS identified 200,000 attempts to tap into such data. It plans to notify all those affected, and will also provide free credit-monitoring services for the 100,000 taxpayers whose accounts were accessed.

NSA Tests Out Smartphones that Recognize Handwriting Motion - from TRUNEWS

The National Security Agency has tested the use of smartphone-swipe recognition technology, according to the tool’s manufacturer.

The mobile device feature, created by Lockheed Martin, verifies a user’s identity based on the swiftness and shape of the individual’s finger strokes on a touch screen. The technology is but one incarnation of handwriting-motion recognition, sometimes called “dynamic signature” biometrics, that has roots in the Air Force.

“Nobody else has the same strokes,” said John Mears, senior fellow for Lockheed IT and Security Solutions. “People can forge your handwriting in two dimensions, but they couldn’t forge it in three or four dimensions. Three is the pressure you put in, in addition to the two dimensions on the paper. The fourth dimension is time. The most advanced handwriting-type authentication tracks you in four dimensions.”

Japan to join U.S., Australia war games amid growing China tensions - from TRUNEWS

Japan will join a major U.S.-Australian military exercise for the first time in a sign of growing security links between the three countries as tensions fester over China’s island building in the South China Sea.

While only 40 Japanese officers and soldiers will take part in drills involving 30,000 U.S. and Australian troops in early July, experts said the move showed how Washington wanted to foster cooperation among its security allies in Asia.

The Talisman Sabre biennial exercises, to be held in locations around Australia, will encompass maritime operations, amphibious landings, special forces tactics and urban warfare.

“I think the U.S. is trying to get its allies to do more,” said Euan Graham, director of the International Security Program at the Lowy Institute in Sydney.

Bird flu causes egg shortage, emergency measures - from TRUNEWS

With a strong dollar bolstering the buying power of U.S. importers, some companies are scouting for egg supplies abroad.

UN chief Ban Ki-Moon is calling for renewed “global action” to limit climate change ahead of a quadrennial congress in Geneva.

The Paris accord, which would take effect from 2020, will aim to limit global warming to a maximum of two degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels.

“This 17th World Meteorological congress comes at a pivotal moment,” Ban said on Monday of the Geneva meet, which runs until June 12.

“As the global thermostat rises, meteorological services are more important than ever,” he said.

Nato war games test Putin: Royal Navy sets sail for Baltic show of strength - from TRUNEWS

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has personally approved the deployment of HMS Ocean and she will sail on Tuesday.

The helicopter carrier will join a flotilla of 46 Nato vessels taking part in amphibious operationsin Poland, within sight of Vladimir Putin’s intelligence base at Kaliningrad. The Kaliningrad base, which also houses Russia’s Baltic fleet, is Moscow’s command and co-ordination headquarters for all air and maritime intelligence gathering missions over Europe.

Sources have revealed that the decision to add HMS Ocean to the list of Royal Navy vessels taking part in Exercise Baltops was made after Vice Admiral Sir Philip Jones, the head of the Royal Navy’s operational fleet, briefed the defence secretary about Nato’s concerns in the Baltic.

The exercise will also feature American B-52 nuclear bombers, which became the ultimate Cold War symbol as they stood on alert for decades ready to strike the Soviet Union.

Greece cannot make International Monetary Fund repayment, minister says - from TRUNEWS

Greece cannot make debt repayments to the International Monetary Fund next month unless it achieves a deal with creditors, its Interior Minister said on Sunday, the most explicit remarks yet from Athens about the likelihood of default if talks fail.

Shut out of bond markets and with bailout aid locked, cash-strapped Athens has been scraping state coffers to meet debt obligations and to pay wages and pensions. With its future as a member of the 19-nation euro zone potentially at stake, a second government minister accused its international lenders of subjecting it to slow and calculated torture.

After four months of talks with its eurozone partners and the IMF, the leftist-led government is still scrambling for a deal that could release up to 7.2 billion euros ($7.9 billion) in aid to avert bankruptcy.

“The four instalments for the IMF in June are 1.6 billion euros. This money will not be given and is not there to be given,” Interior Minister Nikos Voutsis told Greek Mega TV’s weekend show.

IS claims it is ‘infinitely’ closer to nuking US - from TRUNEWS

The Islamic State claimed in the latest edition of its English-language magazine that a nuclear attack by jihadists on the United States is “infinitely more possible today” than it was a year ago.

The article, published last week in the radical Islamist group’s English magazine Dabiq and attributed to hostage British photojournalist John Cantlie, claimed the Islamic State has billions of dollars with which it could “purchase a nuclear device through weapons dealers with links to corrupt officials” in Pakistan.

Cyber-Attack Warning: Could Hackers Bring Down a Plane? - from TRUNEWS

The officials from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) were not at all happy about what they were hearing. An unshaven 32-year-old from Spain, his hair pulled back in a ponytail, was talking about cockpit computers and their weaknesses and security loopholes. Specifically, he was telling the EASA officials how he had managed to buy original parts from aviation suppliers on Ebay for just a few hundred dollars. His goal was to simulate the data exchange between current passenger-jet models and air-traffic controllers on the ground in order to search for possible backdoors. His search was successful. Very successful.

The Spaniard’s presentation took place two years ago in an EADS conference room looking over the rooftops of Cologne. He had been invited after, in accordance with the hacker ethic, he had notified the agency that he was planning to release the results of his years-long study at a hacker conference. Engineers from airlines and airplane manufacturers were also following the Spaniard’s presentation via video. After he had finished, he recalls, they all wanted to know the same thing: “You aren’t really planning on making all of that public, are you?”

US State Department takes on Putin’s ‘undesirable’ NGO law - from TRUNEWS

A law signed by President Vladimir Putin on Saturday allows prosecutors to declare an organization “undesirable” if it presents a perceived threat to Russia’s constitutional order, its defenses or its security.

Laws passed in recent years have already led to increased pressure on NGOs in Russia, particularly those that receive foreign funding. Activists fear that officials could use the new law to crack down on international groups – and the Russians who work with them.

“We are concerned this new power will further restrict the work of civil society in Russia and is a further example of the Russian government’s growing crackdown on independent voices and intentional steps to isolate the Russian people from the world,” said Marie Harf, a deputy spokeswoman for the US State Department, in a statement released late Saturday.

How Nazi secret police files could stop terror attacks - from TRUNEWS

Nazi secret police files detailing the hunt for resistance fighters in Berlin during World War 2 could be used to locate terrorist cells today, scientists believe.

The Gestapo was one of the first organisations in the world to use the technique of geoprofiling in the search for husband and wife Otto and Elise Hampel.

After learning of the death of Elise’s brother in France, the couple began distributing postcards with anti-Nazi messages in apartment buildings around Berlin, hoping to encourage resistance.
