The Trans-Pacific Partnership clause that everyone should be against

The United States is in the final stages of negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a massive free-trade agreement with Mexico, Canada, Japan, Singapore and seven other countries. Who will benefit from the TPP? American workers? Consumers? Small businesses? Taxpayers? Or the biggest multinational corporations in the world?

One strong hint is buried in the fine print of the closely guarded draft. The provision, an increasingly common feature of trade agreements, is called “Investor-State Dispute Settlement,” or ISDS. The name may sound mild, but don’t be fooled. Agreeing to ISDS in this enormous new treaty would tilt the playing field in the United States further in favour of big multinational corporations. Worse, it would undermine US sovereignty.

Professor David Abulafia, a Cambridge University don, described how school textbooks are favoring a misleading idea of citizenship to create a sense of historical European unity.

He said the push for EU integration was already prominent in Germany and France – but is now staring to “creep in” to Britain.

He told The Telegraph: “There is a soft push to create a sense of European citizenship which is based on frankly an invented common history because the history of Europe is to a large extent the history of division, not the history of unity.

The IRS’s inspector general confirmed Thursday it is conducting a criminal investigation into how Lois G. Lerner’s emails disappeared, saying it took only two weeks for investigators to find hundreds of tapes the agency’s chief had told Congress were irretrievably destroyed.

Investigators have already scoured 744 backup tapes and gleaned 32,774 unique emails, but just two weeks ago they found an additional 424 tapes that could contain even more Lerner emails, Deputy Inspector General Timothy P. Camus told the House Oversight Committee in a rare late-night hearing meant to look into the status of the investigation.

PLA H-6 bombers capable of striking all targets in Asia-Pacific - from TRUNEWS

The H-6K strategic bomber of the People’s Liberation Army equipped with KD-20 cruise missiles is capable of attacking all US military facilities from Northeast Asia to Guam, according to an expert in Chinese military development as cited in the state-run Global Times.

President Xi Jinping’s visit to a bomber unit which operates three variants of the H-6 bomber on Feb. 17 attracted the attention of Western experts. Richard Fisher, an American military expert, noticed significant changes and modifications to the H-6K, the latest version of the bomber. The photo published by official state media has allowed an inside view of the H-6K cockpit, he added in his article written for the London-based Jane’s Defense Review.

Expert says the Chinese renminbi could be an alternative currency to the US dollar for BRICS nations, reports China’s Global Times.

Jayshree Sengupta, a senior fellow at the Observatory Researcher Foundation, said recently that while considering the three-year China-Russia currency swap deal which was signed in 2014, the time will come when the US dollar is abandoned. As China now trades with all member nations of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the renminbi should one day be powerful enough to match the dollar.

Food additives linked to obesity, digestive problems in study - from TRUNEWS

The magic of food science has made it possible to walk into a supermarket and buy a bag of cookies that are just as soft and chewy as the ones grandma used to make — but last a whole lot longer. These chemicals found in foods, known as emulsifiers, are the reason store-bought bread and cake is soft and fluffy, margarine and bottled salad dressing is smooth and ice cream is creamy.

Without emulsifiers, our favorite products wouldn’t taste right or have the appealing texture that keeps us going back for more. However, new research suggests these chemicals may be creating a whole host of health problems.

Expert says the Chinese renminbi could be an alternative currency to the US dollar for BRICS nations, reports China’s Global Times.

The researchers used a number of techniques that are used when modeling real diseases, and the abstract ends with this dismal line: “We build up to a full scale simulation of an outbreak in the United States, and discover that for ‘realistic’ parameters, we are largely doomed.”
