The US is keeping India informed of PLA submarine movements in the Indian Ocean, according to a Jan. 27 report on the website of Noida-based magazine India Today.
A US drone detected a PLA nuclear submarine in waters near Yemen in December and subsequently passed the information on to Indian security officials, according to the report. India has expressed optimism about the future of its strategic cooperative relationship with the US. US president Barack Obama and Indian prime minister Narendra Modi recently made an unprecedented decision to increase cooperation on intelligence in the Pacific and Indian oceans. Although the agreement does not specify China as a target of intelligence gathering, the mention of protecting several sea routes appears to be an oblique reference to the country.
