Supervisors oppose 120-240 tons of bird flu carcasses in Polk County - from TRUNEWS

As the bird flu problem continue to grow in Iowa and the Midwest, officials are working to dispose of the animals killed to help prevent the spread of the disease.

Where will they all go?  Many will end up in Iowa landfills.

The Metro Park East Landfill east of the Des Moines metro is the largest landfill in the state. Between 120 and 240 tons of carcasses are expected to be dumped there.
To put that in perspective, Metro Waste Authority takes in 240 tons of waste in an average hour.

“I think that there is a risk. They don’t know how the disease is transferred or how it spreads,” said Tom Hockensmith, a Polk County supervisor.
