Facial recognition technology sees rapid development in China - from TRUNEWS

After e-commerce giant Alibaba executive chair Jack Ma demonstrated the “Smile to Pay” app that validates mobile payments using facial recognition at the CeBit tech trade fair in Hanover, Germany in March, facial recognition technology and applications have attracted wide attention in China, Guangzhou’s 21st Century Business Review reports.

In the era of information explosion, developing techniques to effectively identify individuals has become an increasingly pressing concern for the public. Eying the enormous potential of the market for facial recognition technology, several Chinese technology companies have invested in the development of facial recognition software, according to the report.

A facial recognition system is a computer application for automatically identifying or verifying a person from a digital image or a video frame from a video source, said Zhou Xi, the founder of a company that develops the system and director of intelligence at the Multimedia Technology Center at Chongqing Institute of Green and Intelligent Technology. Facial recognition has a very wide range of applications. It is typically used in security systems, Zhou said.
