Even the Pentagon’s own police force may have mistakenly received live samples of anthrax from the U.S. military, officials said today.
The Pentagon acknowledged it is trying to determine the scale of similar deliveries, and so far it appears that research laboratories in a dozen states and three countries may have received samples containing live anthrax spores.
The Pentagon Force Protection Agency (PFPA), which provides security for the iconic building, may have also received some live anthrax used to calibrate detection equipment, a Defense Department official confirmed today.
The material was sent to a PFPA laboratory sometime in 2007 or 2008, officials said. It is unclear if it was sent to a PFPA laboratory facility located at the Pentagon or off site, said another DoD official.
