Sharp rise in number of RAF planes scrambled to face down Russian jets revealed - from TRUNEWS

The number of times RAF fighters have been scrambled to face down Russian jets over Eastern Europe has dramatically increased, it emerged today.

News of the spike in activity on Nato’s borders comes as new pictures were released showing Typhoons intercepting Russian fighters last week.

The Ministry of Defence images taken last Friday show RAF fighters shadowing three types of aircraft on a single mission above the Baltic Sea. The RAF pilots followed the Russian aircraft until they moved away from Estonian airspace.

British pilots scrambled from their base in Amari, Estonia, have already this year far exceeded the number of missions flown in the previous 12 months. Last year the total number of similar missions flown by RAF pilots involved in Nato’s Baltic Air Policing initiative was 13. With several months left of this year the number has already reached 18.

The rise is partly down to RAF planes currently being placed on a higher degree of readiness than other Nato jets, but MoD sources confirm increased Russian activity is also responsible.

China, Russia To Hold Joint Naval, Air Drill - from TRUNEWS

China and Russia will hold joint military drills in the waters and airspace of the Sea of Japan, Beijing said Thursday, the latest defenSe cooperation between the countries.

The exercises will take place Aug. 20-28 in the Peter the Great Gulf and other areas off the Russian coast, Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun told reporters.

A key purpose of the drills was to “further enhance their capabilities of jointly coping with maritime security threats,” Yang said, adding they will include training in air defense, anti-submarine and surface warfare, and
landings.

China will send seven naval ships including a destroyer and a frigate, along with fighter jets and other aircraft, Yang said. Russia’s contingent will include surface vessels, submarines and fixed wing
aircraft, he said, adding that both sides will dispatch ship-borne helicopters
and marines.

The drills come as Beijing and Moscow intensify cooperation in military, political and economic spheres.

In May they conducted their first joint naval exercises in European waters in the Black Sea and Mediterranean. It was China’s farthest ever naval
exercise from its home waters.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin hold frequent summits and their countries, both permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, often take similar stances there on divisive
issues such as the conflict in Syria.

The waters of the Peter the Great Gulf, south of Vladivostok, are close to where the borders of Russia, China and North Korea come together.

Beijing and Tokyo are at odds over islands in the East China Sea farther south controlled by Japan but claimed by China, though both sides have made efforts to cool tensions through dialogue, including meetings between Xi and Japanese prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

China’s Christians protest ‘evil’ Communist campaign to tear down crosses - from TRUNEWS

Christian leaders – including an 89-year-old bishop – have taken to the streets of eastern China to protest against an “evil” campaign to remove crosses that many see as a coordinated Communist party attack on their faith.

Activists say more than 1,200 crosses have been stripped from churches in Zhejiang province since the government initiative began in late 2013. There has been a spike in such actions in recent weeks.

On Friday, around 20 Catholic clergy staged a rare public demonstration in Wenzhou – a coastal city known as the “Jerusalem of the East” – including Vincent Zhu Weifang, its elderly bishop.

A banner unfurled outside government offices by the group read: “Maintaining religious dignity and opposing the forced removal of crosses”.

Chinese police monitored the two-hour protest but did not break it up, according to UCA News, the Catholic agency.

Zhejiang is home to one of China’s largest Christian congregations with an estimated 300,000 Catholics and one million Protestants split between government-sanctioned and underground “house” churches.

Towering red church crosses – visible for miles around – once dotted the city’s skyline but many of the most prominent been forcibly removed since the campaign began. In some cases, entire churches have been reduced to rubble.

Authorities insist they are attacking illegal building practices not religion. The cross removals appeared to have petered out towards the start of this year.

However, recent months have seen an escalation in removal operations in cities including Wenzhou, Hangzhou and Lishui.

South China Sea: Beijing blames US military for tensions in region - from TRUNEWS

A top Chinese official said on Thursday that US military drills and surveillance flights in the South China Sea were threatening regional stability, a harsh assessment that seemed likely to heighten tensions between the two countries before several crucial meetings.

The official, Colonel Yang Yujun, a spokesman for the Ministry of National Defence, said it was the United States, not China, that was to blame for rising tensions in the resource-rich South China Sea, where China and several other countries are engaged in territorial disputes.

“The Chinese side expresses its deep concern about the United States pushing the militarisation,” Colonel Yang said at a news conference in Beijing. “The behaviour by the United States can only lead one to suspect whether the American side is driven by a desire to see the world in turmoil.”

The dispute over the South China Sea, one of the world’s busiest trade routes, has emerged as a serious point of contention between China and the US.

It is likely to be high on the agenda when President Xi Jinping visits the United States to meet with President Barack Obama in September, and when Secretary of State John Kerry goes to Malaysia next week for a meeting of Asian nations.
China has argued that it is entitled to 90 per cent of the sea, putting it at odds with several nearby countries, including the Philippines and Vietnam. In recent months, it has accelerated its efforts to build artificial islands hundreds of miles off its shore, capable of holding runways, radar and missile systems. China maintains that the islands will primarily be used for rescue operations and scientific research.

While the United States has not taken a formal position on the territorial disputes, it has called on China to resolve the disagreements in international courts, an idea that Beijing has resisted. US officials have also worked to deepen military ties in the region, for example, by participating in joint military exercises with the Philippines, as well as air and sea surveillance operations.

In his remarks on Thursday, Colonel Yang took aim at those efforts, pointing to a recent seven-hour surveillance flight over the South China Sea by the commander of the US Pacific Fleet, Admiral Scott H. Swift. Colonel Yang warned that the United States should maintain a “safe distance to avoid unexpected incidents.”

Greece debt crisis: IMF staff baulk at signing up to new bailout deal - from TRUNEWS

The International Monetary Fund has thrown the Greek bailout into jeopardy once again after it emerged that staff at the IMF are currently unwilling to take part in the new rescue deal.

Leaked minutes of the fund’s latest board meeting, which took place on Wednesday, showed staff “cannot reach agreement at this stage” on whether to take part in the new €86bn (£60bn) bailout for Greece. The document said there were doubts over the capacity of the Athens Government to implement economic reforms, as well as the over the sustainability of the country’s sovereign debt pile, which is now projected to hit 200 per cent of GDP.

The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, only sanctioned a new Greek deal earlier this month on the condition that the IMF takes part.

If the fund fails to sign up, the rescue package might not win the approval of the German Parliament, potentially throwing Greece’s future in the single currency into doubt again.

The new bailout deal is supposed to be concluded by late August.

Earlier this month the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras caved in to the demands of Greece’s eurozone creditors at the 11th hour by agreeing to impose more public sector austerity in order to secure some breathing space for the country’s struggling banking system and to secure the cash Athens needs to avoid a default.

But the decision split his anti-austerity Syriza party, with more than 30 of Mr Tsipras’s own MPs rejecting tax-raising legislation in the Athens Parliament.

Why Italy is the most likely country to leave the euro - from TRUNEWS

What do you call a country that has grown 4.6 per cent – in total – since it joined the euro 16 years ago? Well, probably the one most likely to leave the common currency. Or Italy, for short.

It’s hard to say what went wrong with Italy, because nothing ever went right. It grew 4 per cent its first year or so in the euro, but almost not at all in the 15 years since. Now, that’s not to say that it’s been flat the whole time. It hasn’t. It got as much as 14 per cent bigger as it was when it joined the euro, before the 2008 recession and 2011 double-dip erased most of that progress. But unlike, say, Greece, there was never much of a boom. There has only been a bust. The result, though, has been the same. Greece and Italy have both grown a meager 4.6 per cent the past 16 years, although they took drastically different paths to get there.

Part of it is that Italy, as the IMF points out, has real structural problems. It’s hard to start a business, hard to expand one, and hard to fire people, which makes employers wary about hiring them in the first place. That’s led to a small business dystopia, where nobody can achieve the kind of economies of scale that would make them more productive. But, at the same time, Italy had these problems even before it had the euro, and it still managed to grow back then. So part of the problem is the euro itself. It’s too expensive for Italian exporters, and too restrictive for the government that’s had to cut its budget even more than it otherwise would have.

The Nazis may have been close to creating an atomic bomb and a ‘flying saucer’ to deliver it in the final days of the war.
Tests of the device were even said to have been carried out on Russian prisoners of war, according to a new German TV documentary.

‘The Search for Hitler’s Atom Bomb,’ which aired on the ZDF channel this week, quotes sealed records from Russia and America that are said to prove the Third Reich were close to creating a weapon of mass destruction.

The programme quotes interrogation reports of Nazi scientists, eyewitness account and the records left behind by researchers, many of which were shipped to America after the war.

Historian Matthia Uhl said the race to develop a Nazi A-bomb went into overdrive in the final year of the war.

The programme focused on Hans Kammler, an S.S. general, who was given 175,000 concentration camp inmates to work in the V-weapons factories, tank production lines and building secret bunkers for the Nazi elite.

Kammler was one of a very few who answered only to Hitler and was put in charge of the race for nuclear fission.

One of the projects he worked on was at Jonas Valley in Thuringia, eastern Germany, and said to be the site of the Nazis’ nuclear and space programmes.

A California judge’s order blocking temporarily the release of some undercover footage targeting Planned Parenthood failed to slow down the pro-life group behind the searing and increasingly graphic videos targeting the family planning and abortion giant.

Shortly after a restraining order was issued on some secretly filmed footage, a fourth video was released Thursday that suggests Planned Parenthood officials are well aware of federal prohibitions on buying and selling fetal parts and are taking steps to avoid looking like they are “you know, selling fetal parts across states.”

Putting tissue procurement under the umbrella of “research” offers legal protection, Dr. Savita Ginde, vice president and medical director of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, said in the latest video from anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress (CMP).

Planned Parenthood Received Millions of Dollars After Lobbying Clinton’s State Department - from TRUNEWS

Planned Parenthood lobbied the Department of State many times during Hillary Clinton’s tenure there and received tens of millions of dollars from foreign policy agencies over the past few years, according to a new report.

As secretary of state, Clinton attacked the Mexico City Policy, which bans federal funding of abortion overseas. Her husband revoked the policy during his administration and President Obama lifted the ban upon taking office in 2009. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which is tied to the State Department, steered more than $100 million in funding to Planned Parenthood, its international affiliates, and the pro-abortion Population Council between 2010 and 2012, according to the Government Accountability Office—about 20 percent of the nearly $500 million pro-abortion organizations received from taxpayers during that time frame.

The taxpayer dollars that Planned Parenthood received dwarfed the $3.4 million that Planned Parenthood spent on lobbying during President Obama’s first term, according to a report from Women Speak Out PAC, a partner of the Susan B. Anthony List, and American Rising. Government records document more than 30 instances of Planned Parenthood lobbying federal agencies, including the State Department while Clinton was serving there.

Congress is now considering bills to deny taxpayer funds to the nation’s largest abortion provider after undercover video surfaced from the non-profit Center for Medical Progress showing Planned Parenthood officials casually discussing the harvesting of fetal organs and the price of body parts. The group released a fourth video Thursday showing executives at Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains carving up aborted babies while saying “it’s a baby” and “another boy.” The executive identified as Savita Ginde also tells the undercover videographers, who posed as prospective organ buyers, how Planned Parenthood justifies the sale of those organs.

“In public I think it makes a lot more sense for it to be in the research vein than, I’d say, a business venture,” she said. Planned Parenthood has responded to the scandal of the videos by claiming the fetal body parts are used for research on numerous occasions.

Swiss bank’s donations to Clinton Foundation increased after Hillary intervention in IRS dispute - from TRUNEWS

Donations to the Clinton Foundation by Swiss bank UBS increased tenfold after Hillary Clinton intervened to settle a dispute with the IRS early in her tenure as secretary of state, according to a published report.

According to the Wall Street Journal, total donations by UBS to the foundation grew from less than $60,000 at the end of 2008 to approximately $600,000 by the end of 2014. The Journal reports that the bank also lent $32 million through entrepreneurship and inner-city loan programs it launched in association with the foundation, while paying former President Bill Clinton $1.5 million to participate in a series of corporate question-and-answer sessions with UBS Chief Executive Bob McCann.

Though there is no evidence of wrongdoing, ties between the Clinton Foundation, major corporations and foreign governments have come under increasing scrutiny as Hillary Clinton begins her presidential campaign. The UBS case is unusual in that it shows a top U.S. diplomat intervening on behalf of a major overseas bank in a situation where federal prosecutors and the Justice Department had been the lead entity.

Clinton, speaking to reporters on Thursday, called any suggestion the donations from UBS to the Clinton Foundation were connected to her intervention “categorically false.”

“It’s the kind of unfortunate claim or charge that you see in campaigns, and all I can do is say there is no basis to it,” she said.

U.S. intel fears hundreds of secrets leaked in Hillary’s private emails - from TRUNEWS

The U.S. intelligence community is bracing for the possibility that former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s private email account contains hundreds of revelations of classified information from spy agencies and is taking steps to contain any damage to national security, according to documents and interviews Thursday.

The top lawmakers on the House and Senate intelligence committee have been notified in recent days that the extent of classified information on Mrs. Clinton’s private email server was likely far more extensive than the four emails publicly acknowledged last week as containing some sensitive spy agency secrets.

A U.S. official directly familiar with the notification, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity, said the notification of possibly hundreds of additional emails with classified secrets came from the State Department Freedom of Information Act office to the Office of Inspector General for the Director of National Intelligence.

Benghazi details found in Hillary Clinton’s emails - from TRUNEWS

More details have emerged about emails from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s private server, including that there was classified material from five different agencies and among the information were discussions about the situation in Benghazi, in which terrorists attacked a U.S. facility and killed four Americans.

Then the Obama administration dispatched officials to various television programs to claim it was a sudden violent response to an obscure online video.

The new details were released by McClatchy, which found that the Benghazi email was among those released to the public in May by the State Department.

It’s just the latest development in the scandal surrounding Hillary Clinton’s setup that used her own private server, instead of a government computer, for all her emails while she was secretary of state.

She turned over emails to the government after her tenure that she thought appropriate, and deleted those she wanted to delete.

During her campaign for the 2016 Democratic nomination to be president, she has over and over denied she got or sent classified information.

That’s even though two inspectors general have said the emails did contain secrets.

There were several major concerns among scientists and consumer advocates outside the CDC in the fall of 2000, regarding the execution of the Verstraeten Study. One of the important goals that was determined up front, in the spring of 2001, before any of these studies started, was to have all three protocols vetted outside the CDC prior to the start of the analyses so consumer advocates could not claim that we were presenting analyses that suited our own goals and biases.

Los Angeles passes law banning large-capacity gun magazines - from TRUNEWS

The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to ban the possession of large-capacity gun magazines on Tuesday, following San Francisco to become the second major city in California to take that step.

The ordinance prohibits Los Angeles residents from possessing a handgun or rifle magazine that fits more than 10 rounds.

Residents would have 60 days after the law takes effect to remove, sell or transfer such magazines from city limits in compliance with state law, or surrender them to the LAPD.

The law would take effect 30 days after Mayor Eric Garcetti signs it, a move that he was “eager” to make, he said in a statement.

The legislation comes on the heels of recent mass shootings in the United States, including a movie theater shooting in Lafayette, Louisiana, last week in which two women were killed by a lone gunman who took his own life.

Similar ordinances in San Francisco and Sunnyvale, California, have so far withstood legal challenges and last year, a federal judge upheld a Colorado law banning magazines that hold more than 15 rounds.

German government accuses news website of treason over leaks - from TRUNEWS

Germany has opened a treason investigation into a news website a broadcaster said had reported on plans to increase state surveillance of online communications.

German media said it was the first time in more than 50 years journalists had faced treason charges, and some denounced the move as an attack on the freedom of the press.

“The federal prosecutor has started an investigation on suspicion of treason into the articles … published on the internet blog Netzpolitik.org,” a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office said.

She added the move followed a criminal complaint by Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), over articles about the BfV that appeared on the website on 25 February and 15 April. It said the articles had been based on leaked documents.

The public broadcaster ARD reported Netzpolitik.org had published an article on how the BfV was seeking extra funding to increase its online surveillance, and another about plans to set up a special unit to monitor social media, both based on leaked confidential documents.

Agent’s killers may have harmed thousands trailing radioactive polonium-210 around London, lawyer tells inquiry - from TRUNEWS

The killers of former Russian agent Alexander Litvinenko may have harmed the health of thousands of Londoners as they trailed radioactive polonium-210 around the city, a lawyer for British police said Thursday.

Richard Horwell told an inquiry into Litvinenko’s death that the killing — which police blame on two Russians directed by elements in the Kremlin — may have exposed “hundreds if not thousands of Londoners” to radioactive contamination.

“We will never know how dangerous the exposure of polonium to the public at large will be and what long-term effects will be visited on Londoners,” Horwell said.

Litvinenko, a KGB officer-turned-Kremlin critic who fled to Britain in 2000, died in 2006, three weeks after drinking tea laced with polonium-210 at a London hotel. On his deathbed, Litvinenko accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of ordering his assassination — a claim Moscow denies.

British authorities say there is evidence of Russian state involvement, and police have accused two Russians who met Litvinenko in London, Dmitry Kovtun and Andrei Lugovoi, of carrying out the killing. Both deny involvement.

Horwell said the “the science is such that the finger points unwaveringly” at Kovtun and Lugovoi.
“The Metropolitan Police Service want Lugovoi and Kovtun to be tried in this country for murder,” Horwell said.

It’s Official: US Terror Threat not Islamist, Only ‘Extremist’ - from TRUNEWS

Homeland Security chief Jeh Johnson announced the policy this past Friday at Aspen Institute’s annual security forum in Washington, D.C. He explained that though it was a Muslim terrorist who shot to death four unarmed Marines in Tennessee two weeks ago, the government will call the attack, and other similar ones, “violent extremism” and not “Islamic terrorism” – out of respect for the Muslim community.

Johnson said it is “critical” to refrain from the “Islamic” label in order to “build trust” among Muslims.

The Tennessee murderer, Mohammad Abdulazeez, is officially a “homegrown violent extremist,” according to the government – even though he blogged about his Islamic religious motivations for the attack. He and his family also attended a local mosque controlled by a terror-tied Islamic trust.

Johnson explained that if officials called Islamic terrorism “Islamic,” they’d “get nowhere” in gaining the “cooperation” of the Muslim community.

The moderator of the panel tried to protest: “Isn’t [the] government denying the fundamental religious component of this kind of extremism by not using the word Islamic?”

“I could not disagree more,” Johnson responded, and explained that Islam “is about peace.”

Early social-emotional skills observed in pre-school children can also indicate their future education and employment prospect, according to research that will be published in the American Journal of Public Health.

For the study, teachers rated 700 children on eight criteria, using a five-point scale assessing how each interacted socially with others.

Was There a Crypto-Catholic in Anglican Jamestown? - from TRUNEWS

Several articles have appeared recently about the discovery and identification of remains in Jamestown, Va., in The Atlantic, Smithsonian Magazine, The New York Times and The Washington Post. The Atlantic headline on July 28 summed up the issue: “A Skeleton, a Catholic Relic and a Mystery About American Origins.” In the article by Adrienne Lafrance, the researchers at Jamestown and others discuss the ramifications of one of the discoveries in the grave of Capt. Gabriel Archer, a leader of the English colony. His grave and those of three others were found in the sanctuary of the Anglican chapel.

A small silver box found in his grave is “a historical bombshell” because the archaeologists believe it is a reliquary, which leads them to believe that Archer, who had many conflicts with Capt. John Smith of Pocahontas fame, might have been a secret Catholic in Anglican Jamestown.

A reliquary is a receptacle containing a piece of bone or some other object associated with a saint. Relics have always been important to Catholics: Every church altar contains a reliquary, and the priest kisses the altar, usually on top of the reliquary, at the beginning and end of each Mass.

Top French Official Contradicts Kerry on Iran Deal - from TRUNEWS

Secretary of State John Kerry has been painting an apocalyptic picture of what would happen if Congress killed the Iran nuclear deal. Among other things, he has warned that “our friends in this effort will desert us.” But the top national security official from one of those nations involved in the negotiations, France, has a totally different view: He told two senior U.S. lawmakers that he thinks a Congressional no vote might actually be helpful.

His analysis is already having an effect on how members of Congress, especially House Democrats, are thinking about the deal.

The French official, Jacques Audibert, is now the senior diplomatic adviser to President Francois Hollande. Before that, as the director general for political affairs in the Foreign Ministry from 2009 to 2014, he led the French diplomatic team in the discussions with Iran and the P5+1 group. Earlier this month, he met with Democrat Loretta Sanchez and Republican Mike Turner, both top members of the House Armed Services Committee, to discuss the Iran deal. The U.S. ambassador to France, Jane Hartley, was also in the room.

According to both lawmakers, Audibert expressed support for the deal overall, but also directly disputed Kerry’s claim that a Congressional rejection of the Iran deal would result in the worst of all worlds, the collapse of sanctions and Iran racing to the bomb without restrictions.

“He basically said, if Congress votes this down, there will be some saber-rattling and some chaos for a year or two, but in the end nothing will change and Iran will come back to the table to negotiate again and that would be to our advantage,” Sanchez told me in an interview. “He thought if the Congress voted it down, that we could get a better deal.”

Court bars anti-abortion group from releasing new videos of Calif. company officials - from TRUNEWS

A temporary restraining order has been issued preventing an anti-abortion group from releasing any video of leaders of a California company that provides fetal tissue to researchers. The group is the same one that previously released three covertly shot videos of a Planned Parenthood leader discussing the sale of aborted fetuses for research.

The Los Angeles Superior Court order issued Tuesday prohibits the Center for Medical Progress from releasing any video of three high-ranking StemExpress officials taken at a restaurant in May. It appears to be the first legal action prohibiting the release of a video from the organization.

The Center for Medical Progress has released three surreptitiously recorded videos to date that have riled anti-abortion activists. The Senate is expected to vote before its August recess on a Republican effort to bar federal aid to Planned Parenthood in the aftermath of the videos’ release.

In a statement Wednesday, center leader David Daleiden said StemExpress was using “meritless litigation” to cover up an “illegal baby parts trade.”

“The Center for Medical Progress follows all applicable laws in the course of our investigative journalism work,” he said.

Major U.S. companies go nuts for ‘gay’ rights - from TRUNEWS

The “Wall Street wing” of the Republican Party is working with Democrats and LGBT rights activists to pass sweeping legislation that would make it a federal crime to discriminate against homosexuals and transgenders in housing, education and the job market.

WND reported in earlier this month that the LGBT movement would not be content with the Supreme Court’s June 26 decision legalizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states. The real goal of the activists, with the generous help of corporate backers, is to parlay the court’s ruling into a wide-ranging civil-rights agenda that weaves its way into almost every nook and cranny of American life – schools, the workplace, even the church.

And it will be corporate America that plays the role of difference-maker in getting U.S. politicians to implement the plan.

The bill introduced last week in both houses of Congress is called the Equality Act.

Forty senators, led by Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisc., and Cory Booker, D-N.J., introduced “historic, comprehensive federal legislation to ban discrimination against LGBT Americans,” Merkley reported on his website.

California Drought Could Wipe Cities Off Map If Their Water Runs Out - from TRUNEWS

The epicenter of California’s drought crisis is in the Central Valley, where there are growing fears the drought could wipe entire towns off of the map.

Wells are going dry, jobs are harder to come by and families are already moving, either to different states or even Mexico in search of work.

Before visiting Tulare County, a place where wells have gone dry and some people are living in third-world conditions, we went to a place deep in the Mojave Desert that offers a dire warning of what can happen when the water runs out.

Illegal immigration prevention spending in Central America backfires, entices migrants - from TRUNEWS

The U.S. government paid for a classroom full of computers in El Salvador, but the Salvadoran government never bothered to hire a teacher, investigators said Wednesday — one of a series of bungles in the Obama administration’s plan to flood Central America with U.S. money to try to stem another surge of illegal immigration.

In an expansive report on last summer’s surge, the Government Accountability Office said confusing and lenient U.S. policies pushed illegal immigrants to make the crossing, and even cited administration officials who said President Obama’s 2012 deportation amnesty for so-called Dreamers did entice some of the surge.

Trying to get a handle on the flood, Mr. Obama has requested hundreds of millions of dollars to try to bolster society in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, the three countries chiefly responsible for the surge, but GAO investigators said corruption or incompetence among the Central American governments may hinder those efforts.

In the U.S., meanwhile, Homeland Security officials poured money into public relations campaigns to try to warn would-be crossers against attempting it, but the government has no idea if those efforts worked, the GAO said.

United Airlines Breach Linked to Chinese-Origin Hackers Behind OPM Cyber Attack - from TRUNEWS

A previously unreported breach of United Airlines computer systems has been linked to the Chinese-origin hackers behind the massive cyber attack on the Office of Personnel Management that compromised the personal data of 22.1 million Americans.

Bloomberg Business reported that United noticed an invasion of its computer systems between May and early June, according to individuals familiar with the investigation, three of whom alleged that investigators have connected the breach to the cyber attacks on OPM and health insurer Anthem Inc.

While the airline is still working to pinpoint exactly what data was stolen, hackers likely got ahold of the airline’s manifests, which contain information on passengers, origins and destinations of United flights. The hackers also may have lifted information regarding United mergers and acquisitions.

Taken with information stolen from OPM, the stolen United data could theoretically allow hackers to track the movements of U.S. government and military officials, as United is one of the biggest airline contractors with the government.

U.S. officials believe that the China-based hacking group has connections to the Chinese government.

According to an internal report by the Department of Homeland Security earlier this month, the cyber attacks on OPM networks are believed to be part of a larger-scale operation aimed to steal information for intelligence or military reasons.

Security experts contend that the United Airlines breach is yet more evidence that China is creating a database of personal information about Americans.

China still on track for reserve status bid, says IMF - from TRUNEWS

China’s interventions to stem its stock market turmoil should not derail its bid to gain reserve status for its currency, the International Monetary Fund managing director has said, predicting that the country’s economy is strong enough to withstand the equity ruckus.

Christine Lagarde endorsed Beijing’s efforts to calm its stock market, playing down the declines in Shanghai to date as she pointed out that the market was still up 80 per cent on a year ago.

“We believe that the Chinese economy is resilient and strong enough to withstand that kind of significant variation in the markets,” she said in an online question and answer session.

China is seeking to gain admission for the renminbi to the IMF’s basket of currencies making up its special drawing rights, or SDRs. The SDRs are funds that member countries can draw on in a crisis, and the inclusion of the Chinese currency in the basket of elite currencies would be an endorsement of its efforts to open up its financial system and a boost to the country’s prestige.

The sell-off in Chinese shares in recent weeks has prompted official interventions, including bans on sales of large stakes and liquidity measures to prop up values, triggering questions about the country’s financial stability and commitment to liberalising markets.

Ms Lagarde said observers should not be surprised that the Chinese authorities wanted to avoid a “disorderly functioning” of these markets. “That is the duty of central authorities,” she said. “The fact that they want to maintain a level of liquidity that is commensurate with an orderly process is quite good.”

China’s Yuan Pushes Deeper Into Global Financial System - from TRUNEWS

China’s domestic stock market may be in turmoil but the country’s currency, known as the yuan or renminbi, is making a seemingly relentless push deeper into the global financial system.

The latest step: the London Metal Exchange, the world’s largest venue for trading metals where $15 trillion of metals was traded last year, is set to accept yuan as collateral for banks and brokers that trade on its platform. The Chinese currency joins the U.S. dollar, the euro, the British pound and Japan’s yen, which are all currently permissible as collateral on the LME’s platform.

“In the commodities area, it makes absolute sense to start providing renminbi-denominated services,” said Trevor Spanner, chief executive of the LME’s clearing house business. “The renminbi is on its way to becoming one of the world’s most widely used currencies” he said.

While largely a technical change, the LME move marks another milestone for China’s currency.

The yuan is now the fifth most used currency for international payments, ranking number seven a year ago, according to data from the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, a provider of payments services.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott orders inspections of Planned Parenthood offices - from TRUNEWS

Florida Gov. Rick Scott ordered state health officials to inspect Planned Parenthood offices that perform abortions, saying he is troubled by videos describing the organization’s procedures for providing tissue from aborted fetuses for research.

The Republican governor said Wednesday the state will take quick legal and regulatory action if any of the 16 facilities in Florida are found in violation of the law.

“The videos coming out about Planned Parenthood are deeply troubling to say the least. It is against the law for any organization to sell body parts,” Scott said in a statement.

Planned Parenthood has come under congressional scrutiny after the release of two stealthily recorded videos that showed officials discussing how they provide aborted fetal organs for research. Abortion opponents say the videos show the organization is illegally harvesting and selling organs.

Three congressional committees are making inquiries and a proposed Senate bill that would cut off federal funding for the organization.

Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates Executive Director Laura Goodhue said the organization will cooperate fully, but warned that important medical issues should not be politicized.

“These political attacks claiming that Planned Parenthood profits in any way from tissue donation are simply not true. While we do not have donations programs in Florida, some Planned Parenthood organizations in other states do, and they follow all laws and ethical guidelines,” Goodhue said in a statement.

Kerry: We Can’t Reveal Contents of Secret Side Deals to American People - from TRUNEWS

Secretary of State John Kerry testified on Capitol Hill today the U.S. government will not be revealing the contents of secret side deals with Iran to the American people. Senator Tom Cotton wanted to know why it can’t be made public.

“I’d like to stick with you, Secretary Kerry,” Cotton said. “Why can’t we confirm or deny the content of these agreements in public? Why is this classified? It’s not a sensitive U.S. government document.”

“Because we respect the process of the IAEA and we don’t have their authorization to reveal what is a confidential agreement between them and another country,” said Kerry.

Cotton said, “So the ayatollahs will know what they agreed to but not the American people?”

Kerry said that members of Congress would be able to learn about it in a classified briefing.

Brian’s Persian birth name is “Behrooz Vala Nahid” but it is now shortened and Americanized in the media to “Brian Nahed.” At the time his engagement to Bradford Kerry, there was rarely any mention of Nahed’s Persian/Iranian ancestry, and even the official wedding announcement in the October 2009 issue of New York Times carefully avoids any reference to Dr. Nahed (Nahid)’s birthplace (which is uncommon in wedding announcements) and starts his biography from his college years.

University’s ‘language guide’ frowns upon the word ‘American’ - from TRUNEWS

Political correctness is running amok at the University of New Hampshire — where a Bias-Free Language Guide identifies the word “American” as a “problematic” term that should be avoided because some might be offended.

Instead, students are asked to use the phrases “US citizen” or “resident of the US” so as not to assume that the US is the only country inside the two continents.

The guide was crafted by students and staffers two years ago, but exposed Tuesday by the news site Campus Reform.

Other frowned upon words include: foreigners (preferred: international people), Arabs (Western Asian, Northern African), obese (people of size) homosexual (same-gender loving), and guys (Folks, People, You All, Y’all).

And instead ‘rich’, the guide suggests using “person of material wealth.”

‘Poor’ is to be replaced by the 11-word doozy, “low economic status related to a person’s education, occupation and income.”

Federal judge threatens to hold IRS chief in contempt - from TRUNEWS

A federal judge threatened to hold IRS Commissioner John Koskinen in contempt Wednesday after the IRS failed to produce, as ordered, newly recovered emails of former IRS official Lois Lerner.

U.S. District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan had ordered the IRS on July 1 to turn over Lerner emails on a weekly basis in response to a lawsuit by the watchdog group Judicial Watch.

The lawsuit focused on the 2013 scandal in which the IRS acknowledged agents had improperly singled out Tea Party and other conservative groups for extra scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status during the 2010 and 2012 elections.

However at a U.S. District Court hearing in Washington Wednesday, Sullivan threatened to hold officials, including Koskinen, in contempt for not producing the documents as ordered every Monday.

“If there is further noncompliance, I will haul into court the Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service to show cause why that person should not be personally held in contempt of court. I can’t make that any clearer,” the judge told Geoffrey Klimas, the Justice Department attorney representing the IRS, according to the minutes published on Judicial Watch’s website.

The Catholic ‘spy’ among America’s early settlers - from TRUNEWS

Historians are re-evaluating the role of religion in the first permanent English settlement in America after discovering the remains of four of its early leaders buried alongside a sacred Catholic relic.

In what has been described as an “extraordinary” find graves were located under what was the floor of America’s first Protestant church in Jamestown, Virginia, where Pocahontas famously married the English colonist John Rolfe.

The men in the graves had perished in the three years after Jamestown was established in 1607.

They included Rev Robert Hunt, Jamestown’s first Anglican minister, Sir Ferdinando Wainman, the first English knight buried in America, and Captain William West, who was killed by Indians.

But most intriguing was the grave of Captain Gabriel Archer, who died during the “starving time” when colonists were reduced to eating rats, and even cannibalism.

On top of his white oak coffin was a small silver, hexagonal box, marked with the letter M, which historians were surprised to discover in Protestant Jamestown.

A mysterious hum has been plaguing residents of a Calgary community since 2008 - from TRUNEWS

If you’ve ever pressed one of the low keys on a piano softly and felt the note hang in the air, then you know what it’s like to hear the Ranchlands hum.

The approximately 40 hertz hum has been plaguing residents of the northwest Calgary community since 2008, and nobody can figure out where it’s coming from.

Some people have described it more as a physical vibration than a humming noise. Not everyone can hear the sound, and some Ranchlands residents have assumed they have hearing damage or that it’s all in their heads.

But the hum is real, and really mysterious.

Prof. Mike Smith and his students have spent years trying to help the good people of Ranchlands crack the case.

Smith is a professor in the electrical and computer engineering department at the University of Calgary.

The research has been on and off, and Smith picks up the project again when an interested student comes along. He started working on the hum, which he has heard in the field, because one of his graduate students, Emily Marasco, had been working in the community already to find the source of the noise.

The US Navy is 3D-printing custom drones on its ships - from TRUNEWS

The U.S. Navy has been testing the use of 3D printers on its ships to produce custom drones outfitted for specialized missions.

The project, being carried out by researchers at the Naval Postgraduate School, is investigating whether modern communications and fabrication technology can be combined to give sailors a new tool for whatever mission they are deployed on.

Holding a quadcopter drone in his hands, Alan Jaeger, a faculty research associate at the school, said it was designed by engineers on shore based on requirements of the sailors at sea. The drone was printed on board the USS Essex last December, he said.

The 3D design file was emailed to the ship over a satellite link, and sailors loaded it into the printer. They printed the parts and then followed instructions for assembly, marrying the plastic parts with electronics that were already on board. Those parts included the motors, radio, controller and a GPS unit.

Cecil the lion: slaughter unleashes calls for ban on trophy hunting - from TRUNEWS

The European Union and animal-rights activists are pushing for African countries to stop trophy hunting after 13-year-old Cecil was killed without a permit in Zimbabwe.

UK-based charities Four Paws and Lion Aid called for an immediate ban on lion exports from African countries that allow hunting.

Catherine Bearder, a member of the European Parliament, said the US and EU should follow Australia in placing a moratorium on importing lion parts.

“This was a heinous crime but hopefully it will open the dialogue about trophy hunting and help eliminate it,” said Claire LaFrance, a spokeswoman for Four Paws. “A ban on transporting lion parts would restore dignity to this wild, majestic animal.”

The industry in Zimbabwe’s neighbour South Africa, the region’s biggest trophy-hunting destination, is worth about 6.2 billion rand ($678 million) a year, according to the government’s estimates. It has helped boost animal numbers to the highest since the 19th century, research by the University of Pretoria shows.

UFO sighting: Video captures 10 white globes floating in sky above Osaka in Japan - from TRUNEWS

This bizarre footage has captured 10 white circular balls floating in the sky above Osaka in Japan.

They are quick moving and dance around in the two-minute long video which was uploaded to YouTube.

The unusual white lights are similar to those s potted above a Blue concert in Hyde Park in June.

Officials: Iran may take own samples at alleged nuclear site - from TRUNEWS

Iran wants its own officials to take soil samples at a site where it is alleged to have experimented with ways to detonate a nuclear weapon, and the UN agency probing the suspicions may agree provided it is allowed to monitor the process, two officials told The Associated Press Tuesday.

The investigation by the International Atomic Energy Agency is part of the overarching nuclear deal reached earlier this month between Iran and six world powers. Iran denies any such work but has agreed to give the IAEA access to the Parchin military complex.

Several US senators cited Obama administration officials last week as saying Iran could conduct its own soil sampling at Parchin. The officials who spoke to the AP said a final agreement has not yet been reached between Iran and the IAEA.

The officials said stringent oversight of the soil-sampling could include video monitoring. They did not say what reasons Iran gave for wanting to take its own samples. The samples would be analyzed by the agency for traces left by any nuclear experiments.

Jonathan Pollard, jailed spy for Israel, to be paroled November 20 - from TRUNEWS

Jonathan Pollard, the former civilian analyst for the US Navy convicted of spying for Israel, will be released from US jail on November 20 after serving 30 years of a life sentence.

“The decision to grant parole was made unanimously by the three members of the [US] Parole Commission, who make their decisions independently of any other US government agency,” Pollard’s lawyers said in a statement. “The decision is not connected to recent developments in the Middle East.”

In a statement Tuesday evening, Israel’s Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked also confirmed Pollard’s impending release.

Pollard was formally eligible for parole on November 21, but will be freed a day earlier — Friday the 20th — as the 21st is a Saturday.

China may use microwave weapon against maritime rivals - from TRUNEWS

China is likely to deploy its newly designed WB-1 microwave directed energy weapon against Philippine and Vietnamese vessels in the contested South China Sea, according to the state run Reference News on July 27.

The WB-1 was originally developed as millimeter-wave beam-projecting non-lethal anti-riot system by the China Poly Group Corporation based in Beijing. With an effective range of 80 meters, it can project the millimeter-wave beam to heat water molecules below the skin causing intense pain, the UK-based IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly reported in November 2014. The weapon’s attack range can be increased to one kilometer when its transmitting power is increased.

Reports from the Zhuhai Airshow held in southern China’s Guangdong province last year indicated that Poly was developing the WB-1 for naval applications. To enforce its maritime claims over the disputed East China and South China seas, China is likely to use WB-1 in future non-lethal confrontations with Japan, the Philippines and Vietnam.

China conducts South China Sea live drill ‘to improve at-sea combat ability’ - from TRUNEWS

China’s navy has carried out a “live firing drill” in the South China Sea to improve its maritime combat ability, state media has reported as tensions flare over the disputed waters.

The exercise on Tuesday involved at least 100 naval vessels, dozens of aircraft, missile launch battalions of the Second Artillery Corps and information warfare troops, Xinhua news agency said, citing navy sources.

It added that dozens of missiles and torpedoes, as well as thousands of shells and jamming bombs, were fired during the drill, which tested the navy’s air defence and early warning system.

It also “improved its ability to react quickly”, Xinhua said.

China’s crusade to remove crosses from churches ‘is for safety concerns’ - from TRUNEWS

A Communist party campaign during which crosses have been stripped from the roofs of more than 1,200 Chinese churches is being conducted “for the sake of safety and beauty”, a government official has claimed.

Human rights activists accuse authorities in Zhejiang province in eastern China of using the protracted campaign to slow Christianity’s growth in what is one of the country’s most churchgoing regions.

By some estimates, China is nowhome to 100 million Christians, compared with the Communist party’s 88 million members.

Since the government campaign began in late 2013, hundreds of places of worship have had bright red crosses removed. Some churches have been completely demolished, while civil servants have been banned from practising religion. Some observers suspect the campaign has the backing of the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, and could be a “pilot project” before a nationwide crackdown.

However, an official from Zhejiang’s ethnic and religious affairs bureau told the state-run Global Times newspaper the government had “merely relocated the crosses out of safety concerns”.

“Generally speaking, the church staff and people are very supportive [of the removals],” the official added.

USAF Chief Engineer: Directed Energy for Missile Defense ‘At Tipping Point’ - from TRUNEWS

Directed energy technology for missile defense is reaching a decisive point for future applications, US Air Force Directed Energy Research Lab Chief Engineer Dr. Kelly Hammett said.

“There is a realization that directed energy technology is essentially at a tipping point,” Hammett said in a speech on the future of ballistic missile defense at the US Capitol on Tuesday.

Directed-energy weapons emit highly focused energy and transfer it to a target.

Hammett explained that developments over the past five years have led experts to conclude that directed energy weapons for missile defense “are feasible and achievable.”

In 2010, the US Department of Defense demonstrated the ability to kill a theatre class ballistic missile in its initial boost phase using a high-powered Airborne Laser (ABL) system.

The initial ABL program ran into numerous problems and limitations, which Hammett noted are being worked out in the current generation of technology under development at the Air Force Research Lab.

UN Peacekeepers Need Rapid Response Force, More Equipment – Gen. Dempsey - from TRUNEWS

The United Nations needs a rapid response force and significant amount of new equipment to deal with breakdowns of law and order as well as emergencies around the world, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs, General Martin Dempsey, said in prepared remarks in New York City.

“Improving global peacekeeping efforts will require active participation and solid commitments from member nations,” Dempsey told a meeting on United Nations peacekeeping at the 69th Street Armory in New York City on Tuesday, according to a press release from the US Mission to the United Nations.

United Nations peacekeeping forces had three core needs that needed to be satisfied before such measures could be successfully undertaken on a global scale, Dempsey told the meeting.

“First, the United Nations needs to generate contributions to mitigate equipment shortfalls, significant equipment shortfalls,” Dempsey pointed out. “Enduring gaps in equipment platforms continue to undermine our efforts in ongoing missions around the world.”

Obama tells African presidents their nations need new leaders - from TRUNEWS

President Obama has drawn roars of approval from an audience at the African Union when he mocked the continent’s leaders who refuse to stand down, telling them “your countries need new blood”.

The 53-year-old US president, who is 18 months from the end of his time in office, said he felt he was “a pretty good president”, quipping: “I think if I ran, I could win [a third term]. But I can’t. The law is the law and no one person is the law.”

“I don’t understand why people wanna stay so long – especially when they’ve got a lot of money,” he said, going off script and drawing cheers in the audience on a continent with a history of “Big Men” long-accused of siphoning off state funds.

“I’ll be honest with you: I’m looking forward to life after being president,” he said, anticipating more time with his family and dropping the “big security detail” once his second and final term ends in about 18 months.

IRS Concealed Internal Communications By Using Instant-Messaging System - from TRUNEWS

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officials–including ex-Director of Exempt Organizations Lois Lerner–used an instant-messaging system in a seemingly deliberate effort to prevent their communications from being archived.

Americans for Tax Reform observed that new documents released by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform demonstrate that IRS officials used an instant messaging system called the “Office Communication Server,” denoted OCS, that did not archive their communications.

Moreover, in an email obtained by the House committee, Lerner wrote to her IRS colleagues of the need to be “cautious about what we say in emails,” as the agency had on “several occasions” been asked by Congress to provide select emails or submit to “electronic search for responsive emails.”

Lerner also asked fellow employees whether the OCS messages are archived, after which she was informed that they are not. “Perfect,” she wrote in response.

While the instant-messaging system can be directed to archive messages, an employee questioned by the House committee said that the IRS elected not to take advantage of this feature.

Meteorologists eye rare early season tropical cyclone in Pacific - from TRUNEWS

A tropical depression over the Solomon Islands is being watched closely by meteorologists and climate experts alike in case the deep low pressure system forms into a second rare early season cyclone for the region.

This month, Cyclone Raquel became the first July cyclone in Australia’s eastern region since the satellite era began in the early 1970s.

Jess Carey, a spokesman from the Bureau of Meteorology’s Queensland office, said there was only about a one in five chance that the low over the islands would develop into a cyclone.

Conditions were not yet conducive for the low to form into a cyclone-strength storm but they might be “enhanced” over the weekend or early next week, Mr Carey said.

Fed expected to push ahead with rate hike plan - from TRUNEWS

The Federal Reserve is expected on Wednesday to point to a growing U.S. economy and stronger job market as it sets the stage for a possible interest rate hike in September.

The U.S. central bank is scheduled to issue its latest policy statement at 2 p.m. EDT following a two-day meeting, spelling out how policymakers feel the economy has progressed since they last met in June.

Earlier this year the Fed embraced a meeting-by-meeting approach on the timing of what will be its first rate hike since June 2006, making such a decision solely dependent on incoming economic data.

With a slew of employment, inflation and GDP reports to come before its September meeting, the Fed is unlikely to hint too strongly about its plans, Barclays economists Michael Gapen and Rob Martin wrote in a preview of this week’s meeting.

But simply hewing to the language of the June policy statement, when the Fed said the economy was expanding moderately, or even strengthening the outlook a bit, “leaves the door wide open for September,” they wrote.

Part of Pentagon email network taken down over suspicious activity - from TRUNEWS

An unclassified email network used by Army General Martin Dempsey and other members of the U.S. military’s Joint Staff has been taken off line because of suspicious activity, a Pentagon spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

Army Lieutenant Colonel Valerie Henderson said the unclassified email network for all users on the Joint Staff was taken offline by the Defense Department because of suspicious activity noted over the weekend and is “currently down.”

“We continue to identify and mitigate cybersecurity risks across our networks,” Henderson said. “With those goals in mind, we have taken the Joint Staff network down and continue to investigate.”

Henderson did not specify the nature of the suspicious activity on the network. She said the network was taken offline by the department, not by the activity or any outside party.

When you are identified in a picture on Facebook, biometric software remembers your face so it can be “tagged” in other photographs.

Facebook says this enhances the user experience. But privacy advocates say the company’s technology — which regulators in Europe and Canada have ordered shut off — should be used only with explicit permission.

As commercial use of facial recognition technology grows to replace password logins, find people in ­photos and someday even customize displays for shoppers as they browse in stores, it’s raised privacy questions. That’s one reason the U.S. government is participating in a working group to develop rules for companies using facial recognition — even if those are voluntary.

“Face recognition data can be collected without a person’s knowledge,” said Jennifer Lynch, an attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a San Francisco-based privacy rights group. “It’s very rare for a fingerprint to be collected without your knowledge.”

Amazon Wants 200 Feet Of Airspace For Its Massive Drone Delivery Fleet - from TRUNEWS

The Federal Aviation Administration may be taking its time preparing for our drone-filled future, but Amazon is flying full-speed ahead. Gur Kimchi, the head of Amazon’s drone delivery division, unveiled a regulatory proposal Tuesday that would give the company a 200-foot swath of the sky for an armada of delivery drones. The retail behemoth also called for the creation of a computer-based method to monitor their movements.

Kimchi’s concept, which he unveiled at a conference hosted by NASA, would have Amazon’s drones flying at a low altitude, about 100 feet below the airspace normally reserved for airplanes, operated by a large, centralized computer system rather than a squadron of individual pilots.

The fleet would be, in the words of Kimchi’s proposal, “managed by exception,” meaning that computers would control everything, though it would allow human operators to take the drones out of the sky in case of emergency.

Yanis Varoufakis faces criminal prosecution over clandestine ‘Plan B’ currency plot - from TRUNEWS

Greece’s state prosecutors have set their sights on former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis who faces possible criminal charges over plans to set up a parallel payments system inside the monetary union.

The Greek parliament received two sets of legal complaints about the economist’s “surreptitious” blueprint to introduce a euro-denominated alternative currency as a precursor to an exit from the eurozone.

The cases were bought to the parliament by the Supreme Court following complaints from a Greek lawyer and mayor, and separately by a group of opposition conservative parliamentarians.

As an MP, Mr Varoufakis has immunity over criminal prosecution. But this could now be overturned by the Greek parliament which is set to review the allegations.

The self-styled “erratic Marxist” convened a five-man team to oversee clandestine plans to introduce “parallel liquidity” in Greece in order ease the credit strangulation imposed by the European Central Bank.

Mr Varoufakis’ team included respected US economist James K. Galbraith, and touted the use of smartphone apps to allow the state to continue making its domestic obligations to suppliers and collecting tax revenues. Mr Galbraith could also be facing a criminal trial over his involvement.

Controversy centres over whether or not the finance minister ordered a childhood friend and now professor at Columbia University to “hack” into government computer systems to gain access to sensitive taxpayer information and duplicate files for use under the parallel system.

Anxiety and depression could be linked to the presence of bacteria in the intestines, scientists have found.

A study on laboratory mice has shown that anxious and depressive behaviour brought on by exposure to stress in early life appears only to be triggered if microbes are present in the gut.

The study, published in Nature Communications, demonstrates a clear link between gut microbiota – the microbes living naturally in the intestines – and the triggering of the behavioural signs of stress.

“We have shown for the first time in an established mouse model of anxiety and depression that bacteria play a crucial role in inducing this abnormal behaviour,” said Premysl Bercik of McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, the lead author of the study.

The scientists called for further research to see if the conclusions applied to humans, and whether therapies that that target intestinal microbes can benefit patients with psychiatric disorders.

Lawmakers Vote to Let Obama Take Your Passport Without Trial - from TRUNEWS

In a radical attack on the due-process rights of Americans that received virtually no media attention, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted to give the Obama administration the unilateral power to strip you of your passport and right to travel without a trial or even criminal charges. The scheme does not even include a way to challenge your status as a non-person involuntarily trapped inside U.S. borders on orders from the secretary of state. Lawmakers, some of whom could themselves be caught in the dragnet along with myriad administration officials, praised the effort as a way to stop alleged terrorists from travelling. But critics said it was yet another attack on the fundamental rights of Americans, such as due-process protections, and that it must be resisted.

As if to illustrate how out of touch with the U.S. Constitution most members of Congress have become, the legislation, HR 237, also known as “FTO (foreign terrorist organization) Passport Revocation Act,” did not even receive a recorded vote — supposedly because it was so “uncontroversial.” It passed after 15 minutes of alleged “debate.” Bill sponsor Ted Poe (R-Texas) claimed the measure, adopted under a “suspension of the rules” typically used for trivialities such as renaming post offices, was passed unanimously. Of course, in an age in which the White House openly claims the unilateral authority to murder or indefinitely detain American citizens without even charging them with a crime, passport revocations likely seem trivial by comparison. But opponents of the measure said it was a big deal nonetheless.

Under the bill, “the Secretary of State may refuse to issue a passport to any individual whom the Secretary has determined has aided, assisted, abetted, or otherwise helped an organization the Secretary has designated as a foreign terrorist organization,” the text states. “The Secretary of State may revoke a passport previously issued to any individual” whom Secretary of State John Kerry, or future administrations that could be even more radical, unilaterally decides may have done any of those things. The terms are left undefined, opening up widespread potential for abuse, and there is no appeals process outlined in the legislation.

In essence, if approved by the Senate and signed into law by Obama, one man — far-left radical Kerry, for now — would have the power to strip you of your unalienable, God-given rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Under the measure, individuals targeted by Kerry or his successors would have no right to due-process of law — no trial by jury, no chance to contest the findings in open court (or anywhere else), no right to be presumed innocent before proven guilty, not even a right to see the accusations. Indeed, even actual criminal charges are unnecessary under the scheme for somebody to be permanently trapped in or out of the United States based on secret evidence, with no mechanism to appeal.

Austan Goolsbee, a former top economic adviser to the president, frequently e-mailed with his college classmate Scott Bodow, a “Daily Show” executive producer, to offer spin. Obama flunky David Axelrod often reached out directly to Stewart.

Obama himself would summon Stewart to Washington for meetings.

It turns out Jon Stewart isn’t our Edward R. Murrow or our Mark Twain. He’s more like our . . . Jay Carney. Don’t count on future generations knowing Stewart’s name any more than they will know Carney’s.

Remember when, under a Republican president, it was the duty of all comedians to be the loyal opposition, to speak truth to power? Stewart does the opposite.

Boy Scouts of America ends ban on gay adult leaders - from TRUNEWS

The Boy Scouts of America on Monday ended its blanket ban on gay adult leaders while allowing church-sponsored Scout units to maintain the exclusion for religious reasons.

The new policy, aimed at easing a controversy that has embroiled the Boy Scouts for years, takes effect immediately. It was approved by the BSA’s National Executive Board on a 45-12 vote during a closed-to-the-media teleconference.

“For far too long this issue has divided and distracted us,” said the BSA’s president, former Defense Secretary Robert Gates. “Now it’s time to unite behind our shared belief in the extraordinary power of Scouting to be a force for good.”

The stage had been set for Monday’s action on May 21, when Gates told the Scouts’ national meeting that the long-standing ban on participation by openly gay adults was no longer sustainable. He said the ban was likely to be the target of lawsuits that the Scouts likely would lose.
