In the midst of a weekend box-office slate without much to get excited about, the faith-based drama “War Room” surprised to the tune of $11 million, according to studio estimates reported by Rentrak.
The film, based on the story of a crumbling marriage saved by prayer and faith, is expected to end the weekend in second place behind “Straight Outta Compton,” from Comcast Corp.’sCMCSA, +0.02% Universal Studios.
But the success of “War Room” shows the demand for such faith-based films.
“‘War Room’ is a resounding success,” Rentrak analyst Paul Dergarabedian said, “proving that in a sea of R-rated fare, the film benefitted from filling a void in the marketplace for a largely underserved audience.”
Sony Picture Entertainment SNE, +0.04% , which produced “War Room” with TriStar Productions, expected the film to garner $4 million to $5 million, but the film has turned a much larger profit for its modest $3.5 million production budget. After the film netted $600,000 in early Thursday showings, BoxOffice.com analyst Phil Contrino bumped his estimate for the film to $10 million, from $8.4 million.
