Human Rights Watch is putting pressure on President Obama to prosecute administration and CIA officials who worked under President Bush for torture.
In a report released today, the NGO listed former Attorney General John Ashcroft, White House counsel Alberto Gonzales and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice as potentially being involved in criminal offenses.
It also encouraged a probe of CIA Director George Tenet and other CIA officials, as well as President Bush and Vice President Cheney for approving the methods. The report cites the 2014 Senate Select Committee on Intelligence report, which claimed several prohibited techniques were used to get information.
The Bush administration has said in the past the interrogation practices did not amount to torture. The methods in question were used on suspects in the 9/11 attacks.
In 2012 Attorney General Eric Holder said there was not enough evidence to justify criminal prosecution.
