Police swooped on the man and woman at Dumfries House near Cumnock in Ayrshire, after spotting them acting suspiciously.
Officers from the Royal Protection squad – carrying Heckler and Koch assault rifles, cs gas, tasers and Glock pistols – encountered Steven Stewart, 39, and Mary McDougall, 24, on Tuesday afternoon.
The Prince of Wales and Camilla – known in Scotland as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay – were officially ‘in residence’ at Dumfries House after travelling to Scotland for a string of official engagements.
Armed officers, alerted by an estate worker, stalked the grounds of the estate before encountering the pair, both from Ayrshire, who were found to be in possession of a powerful crossbow and a lock-knife.
