(TRUNEWS) Olive Tree Ministries YouTube channel was suspended Saturday for reaching their third strike in a series of claimed violations of YouTube’s community guidelines, with their interview with Tom Doyle about his book, “Killing Christians: Living the Faith Where it’s Not Safe to Believe.”
Tom Doyle, who spoke with Rick Wiles on TRUNEWS about the same book, said during the interview that not only are Christians in the middle east coming under persecution for their faith but agreed during the interview that the persecution of Christians is “coming to America.”
Doyle clarified that “What this really is is a war on Jesus,” and that “This is evil regimes wanting to eradicate anything about Jesus on planet Earth. There is persecution wherever people name the name of Jesus.” He also positively noted how Iraq at one point promised to eradicate Christianity, but now is the scene of one of the fastest-growing per capita branches of the Christian church.
After review of the complaint against Olive Tree Ministries video, YouTube determined those comments, and the rest of the interview, were considered to be hate speech.
In their online guidelines, YouTube states that “we don’t support content that promotes or condones violence against individuals or groups based on race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age, nationality, veteran status, or sexual orientation/gender identity, or whose primary purpose is inciting hatred on the basis of these core characteristics. … If the primary purpose is to attack a protected group, the content crosses the line,”
In emails to the Jan Markell, the founder of Olive Tree Ministries, YouTube stated:
“The YouTube community flagged one or more of your videos as inappropriate. After reviewing the content, we’ve determined that the videos violate our Community Guidelines. As a result we removed the following videos from YouTube: ‘Stories of Hope. This is the third Community Guidelines strike your account has received within six months. Because of that, your account has now been terminated, and you won’t be able to access or create any other YouTube accounts.”
The first warning several weeks ago from YouTube came when her program addressed Harry Potter during a program about the paranormal.
After Inquiry by World Net Daily (WND) Olive Tree Ministries YouTube channel was reinstated, along with the episode in question, but could this be a canary in the coal mine for Christian media outlets?
In Australia, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has proposed a 3-strike policy also known as Graduated Response, where studios can contact Internet Service Providers (ISP) with Internet Protocol (IP) addresses alleged to have infringed copyright law with sharing or downloading music and movies, and the ISP must send a warning to the suspected customer associated with that address. After three such warnings, the studio can demand details of the customer.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has reported that the Graduated Response protocol has been considered for use by many countries around the world under the pretense of protecting global intellectual property rights. But with the 3 strike policy being used against Christian media organizations like Olive Tree Ministries, it seems to be more likely that the protocol will instead be used to censor controversial content and restrict individuals freedom of speech online.
