Top Chicago Cop Out Following Racial Unrest - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) – In Chicago, the Police Chief is out of a job after days of unrest following the release of dash-cam video showing the shooting of a black teenager and the filing of murder charges against a white officer.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who had previously supported Superintendent Garry McCarthy, announcing during a news conference that he had asked McCarthy to resign.  The mayor also saying that he is creating a new police accountability task force.   Emanuel, a Democrat and the former chief of staff to President Obama, said he was ultimately responsible for what happened in the case, the same as the police superintendent.  Emanuel said McCarthy had become an issue and a “distraction,” saying “I have a lot of loyalty to what he’s done and him, but I have more loyalty to the city of Chicago and its future.”

The moves come a week after the officer, Jason Van Dyke, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of LaQuan McDonald, who was shot 16 times.

An editorial in today’s Chicago Sun-Times also called for McCarthy to step down, as did the Chicago City Council black caucus.

The video shows Van Dyke shooting McDonald down in the middle of a street in October of 2014, as McDonald was walking away from police who had confronted him.  Van Dyke was released from jail on Monday after posting bond on a 1.5 million dollar bail.

Protests surrounded the charging and arrest of Van Dyke and the release of the video last week.  In a protest on Monday, Cornell William Brooks, the president of the NAACP, was one of a handful of protestors who were arrested.

High-profile killings of black men at the hands of mainly white law enforcement officials in U.S. cities have prompted demonstrations in the last two years, stoking a national debate on race relations and police tactics.

The mayor, a Democrat and the former chief of staff to U.S. President Barack Obama, said he was responsible for what happened in the case, the same as the police superintendent.
