A bill passed by the House today puts an end to continuous, stop-gap measures and disputes over defense and domestic spending, as well as federal borrowing.
The two-year bipartisan legislation crafted by House Speaker John Boehner was the last item on his ‘to do’ list before he leaves the job on Friday.
There was some opposition from the chamber’s farm-state and more conservative Republican members.
Boehner getting support from 79 house republicans and all 187 chamber democrats to get the bill passed and send it to the GOP run senate for a vote, which could come as early as next week.
Before the vote was taken, Boehner said that the measure was “the best possible deal at this moment for our troops, for taxpayers, and for the American people.”
The legislation provides an extra 80 billion dollars, split between the Pentagon and domestic agencies over the next two years, and extends the government’s authority to borrow money to pay bills into March of 2017, as President Obama’s successor moves in to the White House.
