(TRUNEWS) – The ten top polling Republican Presidential candidates faced off in a third debate Wednesday night, moderated by CNBC. It was held at the University of Colorado in Boulder. The main questions asked by moderators were in regard to economic issues.
Dr. Ben Carson and Donald Trump, two of the front-runners expressed a desire to stimulate the economy through tax cuts. But Carson is in favor of a flat tax. So is Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
Ohio Governor John Kasich responded to Carson’s promises by calling them unrealistic and by promising to fix the budget by “dealing with entitlements” and “being creative”, but claimed Medicare and Medicaid cannot be eliminated. Carson had said previously he wanted to get rid of the programs, but later changed his mind.
Former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina responded to the tax ideas by bringing up the point that it has been the subject of debate for many years. Instead, she promised to fix the economy, while touting her professional record.
Jeb Bush the former Florida Governor also talked about his record and called into question Florida Senator Marco Rubio’s decision to run for the high office.
“This country is running out of time. We can’t afford to have another four years like the last eight years,” Rubio said.
Kentucky Senator Rand Paul was asked about the current budget just passed in the House, which Paul has been vocal in opposing. He claimed it will cause the deficit to explode and blamed both Democrats and Republicans for spending too much.
Mike Huckabee, the former Governor of Arkansas, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie squared off on the issue of Social Security. Both accused the government of not being forthright with Americans.
“The government has lied to you and they have stolen from you. They told you your social security money is in a trust fund. All that’s in that trust fund is a pile of IOU’s for money they spend on something else a long time ago,” Christie said.
But Huckabee claimed it was also a moral issue, and said the government should keep their promises to seniors.
The issue of Donald Trump’s multiple bankruptcies in the past few decades also made its way into the debate. He defended his actions, and said all major corporations use the bankruptcy laws to their advantage.
The event became heated when Cruz accused the moderators of asking unimportant questions to try and incite a “cage match” between candidates.
“The questions being asked shouldn’t be trying to get people to tear into each other,” he said.
The audience cheered Cruz’s comments, and at times booed the CNBC moderators Becky Quick, John Harwood and Carl Quintanilla.
