Hurricane Patricia is expected to make landfall in southwest Mexico late Friday.
The category five storm is projected to hit between San Blas and Punta San Telmo, with winds near 200 miles an hour, and there may be higher gusts. Heavy rain will accompany the storm, with as much as 20 inches falling in some areas. Swells of surf are likely to cause rip current conditions and 40 foot waves. On land mudslides and flash floods could occur.
The National Hurricane Center has described the storm as “extremely dangerous” and the “strongest storm recorded in the eastern Pacific”. It is being compared to Typhoon Haiyan, which killed 6300 people in the Philippines in 2013.
Authorities in Mexico have evacuated residents. Shelters which can accommodate 259,000 people are being prepared. Residents are boarding up windows and stocking up on supplies.
Hurricane Patricia will continue to move northeast into central Mexico over the weekend.
