The Democratic Presidential field is getting smaller as former Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee says he is dropping his bid for the nomination.
Chafee, who had steadily been near the bottom of Democratic poll numbers, announced his decision in a speech to the Democratic National Committee Women’s Leadership Forum in Washington, calling for the United States to stop becoming involved in overseas conflicts after announcing his withdrawal.
The former Republican served in the Senate after being appointed to fill a seat his father held. Losing a second bid for re-election, he ran as an independent for governor in 2010. He became a Democrat in 2012, but decided against running for re-election, citing low poll numbers.
His departure narrows the Democratic field to three; Hillary Clinton, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley.
Clinton continues to hold a wide lead in national polls.
Chafee’s departure comes in the same week as an announcement by former Senator Jim Webb that he too would drop out of the race for the Democratic nomination, saying he’s looking into running as an Independent.
Additionally, Vice President Joe Biden ended months of speculation this week by when he announced he would not be entering the race.
