A group of Roman Catholic leaders have written a document calling for an effort to stop global warming.
Catholic cardinals, patriarchs and bishops signed the letter at the Vatican, claiming climate change is the result of “unrestrained human activity”. They are calling for a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The United Nations will hold a climate conference later this year in Paris.
The group claims climate change is linked to social injustice and war. There have been disputes over how to help poorer nations in the effort.
In June, Pope Francis called for action to prevent global warming.
The pontiff has been criticized by Republican presidential candidates Jeb Bush and Rick Santorum for the remarks. Both feel the pope should focus on religion and not politics.
