In Texas, state investigators have served subpoenas at three Planned Parenthood facilities in an effort to figure out whether employees are guilty of defrauding the state’s Medicaid program.
Representatives of the Office of Inspector General hit abortion facilities in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas, demanding the offices turn over employee and patient records for inspection.
The inspectors have not yet publicly disclosed the exact reason for the raids; one official with the state’s Health and Human Services Commission telling local media they were there for “oversight.”
However, some people familiar with the investigation say the inspectors were investigating charges that the facilities used Medicaid money to pay for abortions, which is illegal.
Abby Johnson, a former manager of a Planned Parenthood facility in Texas, saying “This has been a day that I have been waiting for.”
The raids come days after Health and Human Services officials announced the state of Texas was pulling Planned Parenthood’s Medicaid funding, meaning no more federal money for the agency for at least a year.
Planned Parenthood officials denied any wrongdoing.
