(TRUNEWS) A group of North Carolina middle-schoolers were allegedly told by security guards at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City to stop singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” during a Friday visit.
According to the students’ teacher, the New York Post reported Monday, the guards implored the students to cease singing because it would be considered a “public demonstration,” something that requires a permit at the site of the 2001 attacks.
That’s right. Obviously you need a permit to sing The National Anthem.
Video of the truncated anthem shows the choir of wide-eyed kids singing before security guards interrupt and begin speaking with the music teacher, identified as Martha Brown.
“Singing was their way of paying respect,” the teacher said. “They were doing it very reverently.”
One of the student’s mothers, Connie Shepherd Scanlon, post the following comment on Facebook
WMS chorus singing @ Twin Towers Memorial. They stopped them half the way thru. You can’t sing the National Anthem. So sad this is happening everywhere. They sounded great. God Bless America!
The New York Post reported that a memorial spokeswoman admitted that the situation was mishandled.
“The guard did not respond appropriately,” she said. “We are working with our security staff to ensure that this does not happen again with future student performances.”
She did not say whether the security guard was disciplined.
