(TRUNEWS) Newly released emails show two climate change groups have plotted to pressure Democratic Attorneys Generals to prosecute people and companies disputing climate change.
Just hours before a March 29 press conference from AGs United for Clean Power coalition, representatives from the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Climate Accountability Institute provided talking points to the group, according to Energy and Environmental Legal Institute (E&E). The coalition’s members include former Vice President Al Gore and 16 AG’s.
During the event the group announced they would seek legal ways to stifle climate change dissidents.
Four years of planning and campaigning went into the press conference, according to The Washington Times. Their agenda was to use the legal system to charge companies who disagree with the idea of global warming with fraud and racketeering.
Several of the AGs have decided to investigate Exxon. Virgin Islands Attorney General Claude E. Walker subpoenaed the company, citing racketeering. Exxon responded by filing a motion to block it.
An attorney for E&E , an organization that seeks to “hold accountable those who seek excessive and destructive government regulation that’s based on agenda-driven policy making, junk science and hysteria”, wants the AGs to stop the probe.
“We call on these AGs to immediately halt their investigation and lay out for the public the full extent of this collusion, producing all records or information provided them in briefings or other work with the outside activists, including those they are trying to keep secret through a Common Interest Agreement,” said David Schnare.
The decision to go after climate change deniers started in 2012 when environmental groups held a workshop. Last year, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), along with other lawmakers and environmentalism to put pressure on the Justice Department to file a racketeering lawsuit against “corporations and other organizations that have knowingly deceived the American people about the risks of climate change.”
Several Republican AGs are fighting back, accusing the coalition of violating free speech.
“This scientific and political debate is healthy, and it should be encouraged,” said a joint statement by Attorneys General Scott Pruitt of Oklahoma and Luther Strange of Alabama. “It should not be silenced with threats of criminal prosecution by those who believe that their position is the only correct one.”
Pruitt, Strange and 24 other AGs have challenged the EPA’s Clean Power Plan, which requires emissions reductions to fight climate change.
