IRS says illegal immigrants using fake info for work, taxes - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) The IRS said it is okay for illegal immigrants to use fake social security numbers, as long as they are getting a job and paying taxes.

Commissioner John Koskinen testified before the Senate Finance Committee and was questioned by Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.)

“What happens in these situations is someone is using a Social Security number to get a job, but they’re filing their tax return with their [taxpayer identification number],” Koskinen said, according to the Washington Examiner. “They are undocumented aliens …  They’re paying taxes. It’s in everybody’s interest to have them pay the taxes they owe.”

The IRS also ignores notifications from the Social Security Administration that a name does not match a Social Security number.  Koskinen said it is acceptable as long as the information is not being used to claim false tax returns.

The information was brought to light as part of a larger meeting about how hackers obtained 464,000 social security numbers in a cyber breach. Last year, in a different incident the information of 330,000 taxpayers was stolen.

Koskinen said the IRS stopped 1.4 million false returns last year, but that $3.1 billion was paid on fraudulent returns in 2014, according to NBC News.

“The reality is criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated and are gathering vast amounts of personal information as the result of data breaches at sources outside the IRS,” Koskinen said.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) said the IRS needed to beef up the authentication process so that hackers can’t steal information.
