Police in Brussels believe at least 50 ISIS supporters are working inside Zaventem airport – and they have access to planes.
They claim they had given the warning before the March 22 attacks, but their concerns were ignored. The jihadists have security badges and include baggage handlers, cleaning crew, and catering personnel, according to Daily Mail. The sympathizers could be planning attacks.
The police said some of the workers celebrated after the November Paris attacks.
“When we checked these people, we were surprised more than once. It was men with a radical ideology and a long police history,” the officers said in an open letter.
In response, the law enforcement officials have threatened to go on strike unless they get more help and more sophisticated weapons.
The Mail has also reportedly interviewed the uncle of the two bombers, Ibrahim and Khalid el-Bakraoui, where he revealed the brothers had worked at the airport in the past.
On Thursday, ISIS threatened German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s office and the Cologne-Bonn airport.
Propaganda pictures were released on the internet, which included slogans calling on Muslims to commit violence. German BKA federal police claim the images did not warrant extra security measures, according to Reuters.
Federal police chief Holger Muench said ISIS wants to carry out more “spectacular” attacks around Europe because they are being defeated on the battlefield in Syria and Iraq.
France is looking into a man suspected of planning an imminent act of “extreme violence”.
