Mass. Governor Booed Off LGBT stage for transgender remarks - from TRUNEWS

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker was booed off the stage at an LGBT networking event Wednesday night because he wouldn’t promise to sign a bill that would make transgender bathrooms legal and prohibit refusal of service to transgender people.

Baker initially drew applause from the group of activists when he said no one should face discrimination, but when he signaled an open position on the bill should it come to his desk, the crowd began booing.

“Sign the bill!” attendees chanted.

Baker continued at first, encouraging people to reach out to lawmakers with their testimonies. But attendees responded by yelling at Baker, saying they have already gone to lawmakers.

Clearly annoyed, Baker told everyone to have a good night, then picked up his papers and left. Boos once again erupted in the audience.

The law would prohibit people from refusing services to individuals based on gender identity, and would permit individuals to use whichever bathroom matches the gender they identify with. Baker said Thursday he looks forward to looking at the bill if it reaches his desk.
