(TRUNEWS) The Obama administration is trying to scare states into changing their policies by claiming it is against federal law to defund Planned Parenthood.
About 10 states have stopped funding the abortion provider after undercover videos were released last year showing the group negotiating the sale of the body parts of aborted babies.
Now the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has sent a letter to states to inform them that Medicaid recipients have the right to receive services from any qualified health care provider, according to LifeSite News, which they claim includes Planned Parenthood.
Pro-life groups claim the letter proves Planned Parenthood gets special treatment by the administration. They were a major fundraiser for Obama – and for Hillary Clinton.
“In the last two decades or so, about 9,000 providers [were] excluded from Medicaid. In most of those cases, they’re completely uncontroversial,” Casey Mattox of Alliance Defending Freedom has testified. “When it’s Planned Parenthood, however, you have the Centers for Medicaid Services reinterpret the Medicaid statute to deny states the opportunity to exclude those providers.”
The defunding is cutting into the profits of Planned Parenthood. The group testified before the House that they receive 41 percent of their total funding from taxpayers, Medicaid and abortions.
They performed more than 323,000 abortions during the 2014-2015 fiscal year and received $553.7 million from taxpayers, which was an increase from the year before, according to LifeSite.
In 2013, the Obama administration gave $13 million in Title X money to several providers, including Planned Parenthood, in violation of state laws in Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina and New Hampshire. Federal money was reduced to Kansas by $370,000, which is the same amount the state denied to Planned Parenthood.
